NOTA WEALTHY BODY.
There is a popular but mistak
en idea that the U. S. Senate is
a body made up of millionaires.
It is supposed that money secures
a seat in this, the highest legis
lative body in the ccunlrv. The
recent failure of Addicks to buy
his way into the Senate from
little Delaware is proof that this
is not a correct conclusion.
Wealth exerts little influence
upon the senate as a body. The
wealthiest member has no place
on any important committee,
never addresses the senate and
would not be listened to if he
did. The aggregate wealth of
a dozen of the richest men in
that body is set down as not ex
ceeding $65,000,000. But few
of this number woulci "be regard
ed as rich men in New York
City. Only a few senators own
their homes in Washington. The
majority depend 0:1 their senato
rial salaries for support, pieced
out, it may be, with some reve
nue derived from work on com
mittees. Hoar is a poor man
and lives in a bearding house.
Allison is on the same financial
basis; yet these two men wield a
mighty influence on legislation.
Our own Mitchell is a poor man,
yet few senators have more in
fluence than he.
So we might follow to the end
f J the chapter and show that,
wealth is not the mighty legisla
tive power that many think. The
truth is it has less influence on
our legislative bodies now than
twenty-five years ago. At that
time the U. S. -Senate was a less
numerous body yet there were
twice as many rich men in it
then as now. The same may be
said of state legislatures, espec
ially in the older states.
Intellect, educated brains,
moral worth and courage never
counted for mere and mere wealth
for less than now. He is an ig
noramus or an unprincipled dem
agogue who asserts the contrary
and undertakes to bring our peo
pie, especially the youth of the
land to accept the view that the
rich make and administer our
laws.
The communication from Mr.
W. H. Currin regarding C. E.
Woodson, which appears in an
other column of this paper, is a
deserved tribute to the ability,
integrity and sound business
judgment of Mr. Woodson front
one of the best-known citizens
and business men of this county.
As Mr. Currin says, Mr. Wood
son needs no testimonial to his
worth here 111 Corvallis where
he has so thoroughly identified
himself with the interests ef this
city and comity, that he has
given hs time, talents and ener
gies to assist in building up the
Agricultural college, the city and
Beaton county. But Mr. Cur
rin speaks in Mr. Woodson's be
half, that persons who are unac
quainted with Mr. Woodson per
sonally shall not be inflenced by
reports designed to injure him
and deceive them.
" Mr. Currin has known C. E.
Woodson intimately for seven
teen years, and he speaks of hmi
in terms that any man should be
proud of. Coming as this testi
monial does from a mau who has
been for years the local manager
of one of the largest business
concerns in this state it will put
to rest any charges made that
Mr. Woodson lacks business abil
ity, or that he will be imprudent
or reckless in the management of
the business affairs of this county
when he is elected to act as
judge of the county court.
Suggestions cji Roads.
Editor Gatezte : Wi";l you permit :e
through your paper to cad the attention
of our citizens to what seem 3 to me to be
a very practical and comparatively inex
pensive method of impioving soi-.ie of the
roaila of Eeuton county, especially those
n:ir the c enleis of trails?? It 13 that
practiced by the "ate Mr. Wallace, of -Jem,
l.o bought a fe years ao a l.irne
fruit f.irm a few miles west of Sa'em. in
folk county, the one which l'rof. Sh-EI-j
fresh, formerly of the Agr.cultural Co'-1
lege, now superintends. Mr. Wallace
paid 20 or 25 cents per load for all gravel
dropped en the road from Salem to his
farm. He f;ot all the teamsters to put a
gravel be!, or loose lioards, in their wag
ons .o that when they went to town with
w xd or any other load they could retnr'.
with a load of giavel, picked up at the
river, and pla.:e it on the road. All thej
fanners tco'c to tiie p an wish eniiitiM
asm and not only benefitted their roads,
but earned enough money each day to
more than pay all expenses of the irregu
lar business. It is said that road is now
nearlv perfect. It is reported that the
Marion county court has made a similar
offer to the farmers and teamsters of that
countv.
Corvrdiis and Denton county jointly
own a fine bad of grave! at the edge of
Corvjilii?, and if the farmers -of the vicin
ity favor the plan r:f ha:i!i:ifi grave 1 on
their return trips from town, ami the
county court think the plan advisable,
the farmers and teamsters would earn
seme money and lose hut little time, and
the count v secure sure, substantial im
provements of some oi its roads. It is
probable the same facilities for securing
gravel exist at Monroe and Philomath.
After the roads are well improved in all
directions for a distance ot eilit or ten
miles from these centers there would not
be a great deal of the much traveled
road of tiie county to 1! improved. A
man ouslit to load hi wa:i ni 20 min
utes and unload it in ten inin.i'.es, and
really not spend in road work eah trip
more than half a:i lio'ir. lli-i team
would tints work Koiu; and returning
from town, which is good economy of
time; but the great end to he accomp
lished that of securing good highways
would be certain. In five years time
great improvement could be made with
little expense either in time or money.
Where there is so much roil making
material at hand, and where the ro.ids
are so bad for-so lon a time each year as
in the Willamette Valley, it does seem
that some plan might be derived to im
prove them. I now feel, after reading
the foregoing, that I may be consi lered
a3 too officious in suggesting anything
oa road improvement, if so, pardon me,
I hops we may secure soon better facili
ties for travel on our highways.
Yours tiuly,
W. E Yates.
