COMPLETED THE TICKET.
The Republican County Cen
tral Committee met in this city
yesterday and completed the ex
cellent ticket named at the re
cent county convention. For
county judge the committee se
lected C. E. Woodson, oiie of the
most popular and able attorneys
in this city. No better selection
could have been made. Theo.
Wellsher was prevailed upon to
accept the nomination for treas
urer, and all republicans will en
dorse this act of the committee.
For justice of the peace of the
Corvallis precincts, Harold
Strong was chosen, and O. J,
Treese was nominated for con
stable. Believing that on ac
count of his fitness and the fact
that in the nature of things Mr.
S. N. Wilkins is the proper per
son to fill the office of coroner,
the committee named him lor
that office. His election is as
sured.
No ticket ever presented to the
voters of this county has receiv
ed the careful consideration ac
corded the one running: at the
head of this column, and none
other was ever more worthy of
support.
NOTHING NEW. V
The democrats of Oregon have
given their platform to the world
and named their candidates for
public office. The platform is
characteristically democratic
Nothing is found upon which to
base a real live issue, either in
the conduct of affairs of the state
or of those larger affairs concern
ing the nation. The republican
party has been in power, republi
can measures have been applied
and so intelligently administered
that no sort of foothold remains
for democrats. Nothing re
mains for them but to assume
that position for which long prac
tice has best fitted them mere
negation. The democratic party
today is but a negative force. It
is reasonable to suppose, and it is
charitable to assume that m the
democratic fold are yet some men
able to see, quick to name, coura
geous enough to accept any real
issue presenting itself in the at
titude of the republican party on
any question oi public policy or
administration. That they have
not done so is conclusive evi
dence there is no occasion for it.
True, they prate much of the
ineffeciency and extravagance of
the republican party. They set
up a man of straw in the Philip
pines, proceed to demolish it,
then declare what they would do,
and lo! it is just what the rebub
lican party and administration is
doing so intelligently, so success
fully as to excite the wonder and
approval of the civilized world.
The fight with the straw man
deceives, misleads no one.
Their plank on irrigation of
arid lands is identical with the
republican purpose as expressed
by president Roosevelt. Their
utterance concerning trusts, cor
porations and combines is the sil
liest .rodomontade. The people
well know that all the legislation
controlling these is given by the
republican party, and that repub
lican officers even now are earn
estly enforcing the laws so sup
plied.
Touching state affairs the plat
form clamors for an official salary
law, for initiative and referendum
and for other measures stt forih
more incisively in the republican
platform. Of course republican
extravagance
is arraigned in
scathiug lanuatrc, and the peo
ple promised a wise, economical '
and business . administration.
Then with their usual glaring
inconsistency they nominate for
chief executive, not a trained
business man, not one who has
shown any great force of charac
ter, not one who knows the pco
iple because he is of them, knows
tbem and believes in them, but a
lawyer, a well-dressed, suave and
cultured gentleman of good stand
ing in kid-gloved society, but
who has never accomplished any
ot those tnings wnich are com
passed through energy, great ac
tivity, persevering purpose and
unflattering courage. Mr. Cham
berlain is an eminently decent
and respectable gentleman, with
kindly, somewhat willowy dispo
sition who has yet to learn to say
'no" with all its force and
meaning. '
Who looks for that rare jewel,
consistency, will not find it inthe
democratic camp. Farmers, ar
tisans, tradesmen, the whole peo
ple, will readily see the difference
between a nice, well-groomed, so
ciety man, and a man who does
things because he knows how
they should be done,
The contrast all through the
ticket simply strengthens the re
publican ticket and leaves no
doubt of its election.
