PRINCIPLES AND MEN.
Principles without courageous
men to advocate and apply them
are of little benefit to mankind.
Men devoid of right principles
are a positive calamity to the
communities in which they move.
But when correct principles and
wise measures are supported by
cmod men the result cannot fail
being altogether desirable.
The republican party has ever
been most fortunate in the prin
ciples and measures it has adopt -ed
and the men it has selected to
set them forth. The recent state
convention maintained the rec
ord of the party and gave a clear
and forcible statement of those
principles and measures which
republicans of Oregon hold to be
right and essential to the public
weal.
Some of these relate to the
nation: others to the state. Of
the latter we may notice a de
mand that the next legislature
enact a law placing all public
officers of the state upon reason
able salaries which shall be their
snle comoensation. The crea
tion and maintenance of a min
in bureau by the state is favor
ed. The speedy improvement of
our rivers and harbors ana tne
construction of an isthmian canal
is urged upon our delegation in
congress. The legislature is re
auested to enact such additional
laws as may be necessary to foster
and suonort our fisheries. 1 he
passage of the oleomargarine bill,
or Grout law. by congress is in
sisted upon. The constitutional
amendments tirovidinsr for the
initiative and referendum is fav
ored and recommended to the
people of the state. The legis
lature is asked to extend the
principals of the Lockwood pri
mary election law to all the pre
cincts in the state. The election
of United States senators by pop
ular vote is recommended. The
passage of the Mitchell-Kahn or
Chinese exclusion diu now oc
fore congress is demanded.
These are ihe chiet measures
of local importance embodied in
the platform adopted by tne con
vention. They are of wide
range and embrace quite all that
our ceoole desire and that would
be of much public benefit.
tt is rarely that we read a par
ty platform that is so earnest, so
concise and so direct in its utter
ances as this published by our
state convention. It is not ffor
the purpose of capturing votes; it
means business.
Further evidence of this is
found in the nominations made.
From top to bottom a good,
strong ticket was formed by
naming men well qualified to fill
the requirements of the office for
which they are selected.
Naturally the chief interest
centers upon the selection for
governor. Mr. Furnish is easily
the most prominent business man
in Eastern Oregon. He has won
his way from the very foot of the
ladder by unimpeachable integri
ty, unflagging energy, and con
stancy of purpose. His impulses
are manly and generous, and his
decision of character of the first
order. These characteristics of
the successful business man he
will carry into his conduct of
the state government. He will
be governor.
The renomination of Judge Beau,
Secretary of State Dunbar, Treas
urer Moore and Superintend
ent Ackerman is a fitting tribute
to the effeciencv and fidelity of
these officials. The nomination
of A. M. Crawford for attorney
general, and J. R. Whitney for
state printer met with hearty ap
proval. Good men have been selected
for joint senators and representa
tives, and the several counties
nare formed strong legislative
tickets. The party is in good
shape, and it will elect its ticket
pext June.
