INJUSTICE TO LABOR.
Labor, skilled and ordinary,
contends that it is inadequately
rewarded. This is an old con
tention and it has never been
without just reason, if we loolc
for the reason in the fact that
labor does not receive a just share
of the profits arising from the
united efforts of capital and
labor.
It is true that sometimes and
for periods labor has been exceed
ingly well paid while the capi
tal employed has not nearly earn
ed the ordinary rate of interest;
but this is a condition capital
will not long endure.
It is no argument ayaiust this
assertion of labor that it was
never more fully employed and
so well remunerated as now.
While this is true it is equally
true that capital never found it
easier to establish profitable en
terprises, and never gathered
such golden rewards as now.
The prosperity of our people on
all lines of industrial activity was
never so general as at present.
The outcome of this prosperity
bears the suggestion that the new
industrial conditions from which
it springs have not inured to the
benefit of the workingman to the
extent thev should. In the man
ufacturing world, especially, we
see mighty combinations of capi
tal formed under the names of
syndicates, corporations, trusts
It is true that the prune purpose
in forming these has been to
economize the cost of production
and distribution of the finished
commodity. It is also true this
has been done and a high wage
scale has been maintained. In
deed, in many instances the wage
scale has been advanced, yet the
contention remains that the work
ingman has not been proportion
ately benefitted. As evidence of
this he points to the fact that
men -with comparatively -little
capital invested in such combina
Hons rapidly amass wealth, so
that in a few years they may re
tire from business with an ample
competence, possibly the posessor
of great wealth. The working
man, however, finds that he has
reached the age of forty-five or
fifty and so has fallen below the
standard of efficiency required by
the new industrial conditions,
His earning capacity has deterio
rated. He no longer has the re
quisite, nerve, snap, endurance.
He finds himself crowded to the
wall by younger men.
Most fortunate, indeed, is he if
"with thrift and a good wife to
manage," as Mr. Carnegie puts
it, he finds himself the owner of
his modest cottage, but sans bank
account, and holding no certifi
cates of handsome dividend-paying
stocks. His life of toil, even
with industry and thrift, has
given him little more than mere
ly a subsistence.
Small wonder if under these
conditions he sometimes turns to
socialism, is almost persuaded to
embrace anarchy in search of
more nearly equal conditions.
A brighter day is dawning.
Strikes, lock-outs, mad assaults
upon capital and its wise combi
nations, unthinking attacks on
the very instrumentalities which
have wrought our prosperity are
giving place to a spirit of amity
between capital and la')or spring
ing out of recognized unity of
interest.
Voluntary arbitration of differ
ences, participation in the profits
of business to supplement liberal
wages are already at work. These
are the presage of better things
to follow.
The contest has been long and
bitter, but the end is in sight.
The laborer needs but exercise
patience, and careful intelligence.
He is in sympathetic touch with
the world, and will be accorded
justice. Never before have so
many men heartily believed that
"The laborer is worthy of his
hire" and held to this view in
the spirit of its first utterance.

this reason I do not take it ill that the
Achaeans are sad near the curved ships.
But even inspite of all that it is, I assure
you, disgraceful both to remain so long
and toi return home empty handed.
Cheer up, O friends, and remain a wliil

unblemished hecatombs, under a beauti

then appeared a wonderful portent a
snake on the back all blood red, terrible,
which, mark you, the' Olympian himself
sent forth to the light, gliding from be
neath an altar darted directly to the
plane-tree, and hera were the nestlings
of a sparrow, a tender brood, on the top
ino-t branch, crouching under the leaves
eight, and the mother, which hatched
them, was the ninth. See Gen. 41 chap
He now devoured them twittering pite-

round about, lamenting for her dear
brood, he, having coiled himself, seized
her by the wing when she was shrieking
about. And whea he had devoured the
brood of the sparrow and herself, god.
the very god who caused him to appear
made this portent vary clear. For the
son of crafty Kronos changed biin the
snake into a stone: and we who stood
by wondered what had happened.
Thus then dire portents occurred at the
time of the sacrifices in honor of the
gods, and Kalchas then immediately
saia propnysing, wiieretore iiave ye

well greaved Achaeans, here, on the spot
until we have captured the great city of

Brain-Food Nonsense.
Another ridiculous food fat has been
branded by the most competent authori
ties. They have dispelled the silly
notion that one kind of food is needed
for brain, another for muscles, and still
another for bones. A rorrect diet will
not only nourish a particular part of the
body, but it w ill sustain every other part.
Yet, however gcod your fo d may be,
its nutriment is destroyed by indigestion
or dyspepsia. You must prepare for
their appearance or prevent their coming
by taking regular doses of Green's
Augnst Flower, the favorite medicine of
the healthy millions. A few doses aids
digestion, stimulates the liver to healthy
action, purities the blood, and makes
you feel buoyant and vigoious. You
