THE FARMER BENEFIT'IED.
It is asserted bv at ""least a part
7SF f
of the press which is opposed t
the shio subsidy bill that it will
be of no benefit to the American
farmer.
There can lie little question
that our farmers are now making
their products, for the greater
part, as cheaply as possible. This
is especially true of grain produc
tion. A bushel of wheat is now
produced as cheaply as it is pos
sible to produce it. The wheat
grower can not make any more
maney through improving or
ckeapening his process The
of
only remaining hope of increased
profit to the wheat grower is in
obtaining cheaper rates 01 Irans
portation to the markets. It fol
lews that whatever reduces cost
of carriage is to his benefit.
We practically have no mer
chant marine engaged in the for
eign trade. We do scarcely more
than 5 per cent of our foreign
carrying trade; mneteen-twenti
eths of it is conducted by foreign
vessels and controlled by foreign
ship owners. -No one is so unso
ohisticated as to believe these
owners are sailing their ships for
the orofit of America and the
benefit of American farmers.
Herein we see the main reason
why the price of American grown
wheat is fixed at Liverpool
Were its carriage in American
hands its price would be fixed in.
San Francisco or New York. Uur
exporters of wheat, certain of our
11 c il.- !
own carriers, wouia nx uie pru:c
the foreign consumer must pay,
instead of the foreigner, as now
with his own transportation fix
ing the price at which the Amer
ican must sell,
. With the carrying trade in the
hands of foreigners it is but
natural they' should strive to
make wheat as cheap as possible
to foreign consumers, while get-
ung meir own cnarges ior car-
.1 . 1
riaxe nence mey aie aiways 1
bears in the American market.
The producer who controls his
own means of transportation al
ways has a decided advantage
over one who depends upon
others for such means. With
our own merchant marine we
would keep in our own hands the
$200,000,000, we now pay annu
ally to foreign ship owners, but
the subsidy will never exceed
4q. 000, 000. By granting this
subsidy we save to ourselves up
wards of$i90,ooo,ooo, and this
we do while paying our own
ships the same tonnage rates we
now pay foreigners. It is not at
all unreasonable to believe that
oar own ships will serve us more
efficiently and cheaply.
View the matter as we may, it
is certain that with our own ships
we shall not only save the money
we mow pay away for carriage,
but we shall more easily control
the price at which we sell our
products. " This will benefit the
American producer, and none
more than the farmer.
Since we in no case shall sell
Europe a bushel of wheat more
than she needs we should cer
tainly make every effort to carry
all she mav need of us.
HOMER'S ILIAD.
Book I A. Literal Translation by C.
MacLean, Ph. D.
Vv. 285-291 Agamemnon's Reply to
Nestor:
Then the princely Agamemnon replied
and said: "Yes, indeed, old man, all
these things thou hast spoken in accord
ance with right. But this man desires
to be above all the rest he desires to
have power over all, to exercise kingly
power over all, to command all as a
military chief, in respect to which some
one, I think, will not obey him. But
if the gods, who are always immortal,
made him a warrior, do they on this ac
count allow him to deal in abuses i. e.
abusive language ?"
Then the noble Achilles interrupting,
answered him :
"I have acted rightly for of a truth I
should bo called a worthless and feeble
fellow, if, forsooth, I shall yield to thee
in everything that thou mayst perchance
say. Others, whoever they may be, I
care not whom, command in respect to
these things, but not to me dictate, for
I think that I shall no longer obey thee.
And another thing I will say to thee,
and do thou ponder it in thy heart: With
my hands I never, I assure thee, will
fight for the maiden either with thee or
with another, since ye who gave ier to
me take her away from me; but cf the
other things which are near the black,
swift ship, of these do hot dare to lift up
and carry away anything while I am
unwilling. But, indeed, if it is thy wish,
come, make a trial of me, iu order that
these i. e. the chiefs aboat Agamem
non also shall know : quickly shall thy
black blood flow around my spear." -
