THE WILIS GAZETTE. FlillUV, OCTOBEK 18, 1001. HARMONY AND VICTORY. The Multnomah county repub licans have reorganized their county and city committee. Dr. O. P. S. Plummer succeeds Hon. D. Mackay as chairman and W. S. Dunniway succeeds Graham Glass as secretary. The city committee has also organized an advisory body of one from each ward, and the county committee will doubtless do likewise by se lecting one member from each precinct in the county outside of the city. This action was necessary be cause the committee as previous ly constituted did not pcrwsbS the confidence of the party i:i the couaty. It is a decided and we believe, an effectual effort to quiet and to harmonize the fac tional dinerences which nave lor long: distracted the party in that countv. So far as this committee , may influence the selection of delegates to the city, county and state conventions only approved republicans will be chosen. This will estop the nomination of any such speckled delegation as the county sent to the last legisla ture. Multnomah county will send republicans, to the legisla ture, and if it were possible to - supplant a hold-over senator it would surely be done. It is true that the primaries are to be con ducted with absolute fairness and the convention free and open to every republican seeking a nomi nation. Of course this will be so. When was it otherwise? Withdrawal of the appeal taken in the Xockwood primary law, and holding the primaries accord ing to its provisions would be grateful evidence of the sincerity of this purpose, but this will not be done, nor, indeed, need it be. The committee is wisely plan ning harmony and republican success and they will surely achieve both. It goes without saying that this will be highly appreciated by republicans througheut the state. The Port land charter will cut little or no figure in the next legislature, which is most fortunate' for the city, the state and the party. The bmens of a republican vic tory next June are very auspi cious. There seems to be a well defined purpose to insure the electien of a republican governor and legislature by avoiding the nomination of any one who either in the legislature or out of it has been identified with any faction or clique. This can be done it should be done, and in no other county is it more necessary to re publican success than in Benton county. The republican ' majority in ' this county is small, and if the candidates named by the conven tion, especially those selected for the legislature, have been in any measure identified with faction, and "personal politics" they can not be elected. The convention must insist that men are placed in nomination who shall be accept able to the republican party, and so far as possible to all good cit izens, l nev should be men oi calm, cool, dispassionate and in telligent judgment, whom no clique, no faction, no individual may possibly influence and con trolmen who know what the county needs in the way of legis lation and who have such mater ial interest in the county as shall add weight to their opinions and strength to their purpo'ses. Any thing short of this forbids hope of - republican success. Selections from Roman History k Literal Translation from Eutropins by C. MacLean, Ph. D. Fabricius Rejects Otter to Poison Pyrrhus Pyrrnns Conquered. (Continued) Publius Sulpicius and Decias Mue, consuls, were sent as leaders against Pyrrhus. Having'joined battle Pyrrhus was wounded, his elephants killed, twen ty thousand of the enemy Blain and only five thousand of the Romans fell. Pyr rhus was put to flight to Tarentum. After the lapse of a year Fabricius, who, before, when with the ambassadors could not be tempted by the promise of a foarlh part of a kingdom, was Bent against Pyrrhus. Then, when he him self and the king had possession of neighboring camps, the physician of Pyrrhus came to him by night to assure him that he would kill Pyrrhus with poison if he would promise him some thing. Fabricius ordered him led back bound to his master, and (ordered) to be told to Pyrrhus what his physician Lad promised against bis life jut. his head. Then the king, tilled with admiration for him, is reported to have said: "He is that Fabricius who can with greater dif Hculty be turned away from honor than the sun from Ids course." Then the king set out for Sicily. FabriciM having conquered the Lucanians and the Sam- The consuls, Marcus Curias Dentatus and Cornelius Leulutus were next sent against Pyrrhus. Curiug fought against him, routed bis army, put himself to flight to Tarentuui and captured his camp. On that day twenty-three thou sand of the enemy were slain. Curiug celebrated triumph whi'e in the con sulship, lie was the first to briiijj ele phants to Reme. Pyrrhus withdrew from Tarentum, and was afterward killed at Argos, a city of Greece.
