COLLAPSED.
The treat strike of the steel
workers ends in miserable fail
ure. This was foreseen by all
who understood the objects of the
strike, and by none more clearly
than by large numbers of the
workmen,, themselves. The chief
cause of its failure is found in the
fact that there was no adequate
reason for it. It did not involve
a question of wages, hours of
work, time of pay day, or any
. such thing; it was simply an at
tempt of certain leaders and or-
canizers
of labor to torce non-
union men into labor unions.
These lead -r aimed to hr'ng the
employers of labor, the mill own-'
efs, over to their aid by suspend
ing work in those mills where
only union men were employed,
until the non-union mills had
been unionized. They attempted
to organize a general sympathetic
strike in every industry in which
the workmen have a union, by
inducing all labor unions to come
into the Amalgamated Associa
tion. They did not succeed in
doiag this, although the Tin
Plate men entereJ the strike.
In the whole history of labor
strikes it is Questionable if there
is recorded one so causeless and
utterly senseless as this one,
Never before were men more
constantly employed at so god
wages as when this strike was or
dered. They were satished, nap
py and contented. They had no
sort of grievance, and these con
ditions promised to extsnd far
into the future. Labor leaders,
however, must enforce their ideas
and purposes. All the workmen
must become members of a labor
union and all unions must enter
the one great amalgamated union.
A strike having no better pur
pose than this should fail just as
this one failed. There is in this
failure a lesson that the workmen
may learn to their future advan
tage. In the McKeesport dis
trict aloBe upward of one million
of dollars have been lost in wages
and three tin plate mills hereto
fore union are now non-union
mills. Tha strikers are now ask
ing for employment at the jobs
they so lately abandoned. Of
course, all for whom work can
be found will get it, but the
places of many have been filled
and they must seek employment
elsewhere. They will find it
shortly, for there i9 work for all
but they must be idle awhile
longer move their families to
Pittsbursr, Wheeling, or some
more distant point.
All this loss and possible suffer.
ine to the workmen was caused
bv the vanity of T. T. Shaffer,
president of the Amalgamated
Association, who sought to make
a record as an "organizer of la
bor." He is a demagogue, a!
the more dangerous because rath
er intelligent and having some
education. The workmen now
see how causeless the strike and
are greatly embittered toward
him.
There are very encouraging
signs that the mass of intelligent
workmen are becoming very
tired of the tyranny of labor un
ions and the leadership of. pro:
fessed organizers and friends of
labor. There is some hope that
labor unions will free themselves
from their imported features and
become as helpful and useful as
their most intelligent members
believe they should be. In tke
hands of wise leaders this is pos
sible, but never while idle and
sentimental theorists direct them.
A VOID EXAGGERATION.
Men who do not intend it some
times utter mischievous things
and arouse bitter feeling in others.
The truth may be spoken in the
language of exaggeration and
thus do as great harm as a direct
lie. It is not improbable that
those errors which are most hurt
ful spring from an exaggerated
statement of what is true. It is in
this manner the most pernicious
errors are given some semblance
of truth. Unthinking men See
the truth, but fail to see its false
setting, and so accept the whole
mass as truth.
Recently we heard one who
who desired to condemn averice.
This is a mean, contemptible
vice, but not many men in a
community are really avaricious.
The greater number of men are
earnestly and honestly striving to
gain a competency, wealth it may
be, but not great riches. Under
the modern conditions of business
men must do this early in life, if
at all. This is the rule. We
must have gained within a few
years what our fatiers were able
to gain only by long endeavor.
We rush after things. - Our mor
alist sees this rush, and not being
trained to close analytical thought,
concludes that all men are after
the "Almighty Dollar;" that the
desire to acquire wealth quite ab-
' sorbs the time and thoughts of,
men; that to the neglect of high
er and nobler aspirations the
mss ot men worship a go den
calf. Men. hava forgotten the
self-sacrificing, heroic spirit of
their fathert and are moved only
by lovt of the 1 'Almighty Dol
lar." This' is misleading; it is
false and mischievous. Never in
our history have men been more
iberal in giving out of their
substance in support of every en
terprise for the benefit of their
fellows. The "weak, the defence
less, the unfortunate, the erring,
never before received snch graci
ous and efficient help as their
more fortunate fellows gladly ex
tend to them now. The heroic
pint is not dead, not even sleep
ing. Greater numbers ot men
and women are possessed of the
true heroic spirit than ever be
fore. The fathers may, indeed,
look proudly on their children
and children's children,, for these
have shows their heroism,- are
exhibitinj? it every day in some i
of the walk) of life.
There is less of selfishness and
avarice among men today tnan
at any former period. There is
more of the heroic spirit. Men
ive ia purer, better atmosphere
than ever before. They are
moving forward aud upward.
A few men of limited educa
tion and small experience may
amuse themselves with mock
heroics, but the great heart of our
American people beats true ,and
right.
Sehool Trials.
State Saperiateadent Aeker-
man has seen fit to issue a new
set of rules and regulations which
nave been adopted by the Board
of Education. The following
rales relate particularly to trials
before the board of directors of
public schools:
Rule A In all trials before a
District Board ef Directors the
clerk of said board shall person
ally furnish the defendant, in
writing a copy of the charges
preferred against him, and also
the time and place where the
matter at Issue will be tried;
provided, that- at least five days
shall cLtpse. between the time
that the defendant shall receive
such cotiea and tha date of trial.
In all such trials the Board shall
have authority to hear and re
ceive testimony for cither party,
and for that purpose may subpoe
na witnesses and administer
oaths, if necessary, and the de
fendant snail hava apportuaity
to be heard in person or by an
attorney. -'
Rule 6 At the time fixed for
the hearing, both the complain
ant and the defendant shall have
an opportunity to be heard either
in person or by attorney, but no
evidence shall be coasldered by
said Superintendent except that
produced before the Board of Di
rectors, from whish the appeal is
taken. Alter hearing snch ar
gument, the County Superinten
dent shall make such decision
as may be just and suitable, and
he shall immediately ' notify all
persons interested of his decision.

Seven Days ' at Carnival.
All the transportation lines . in thn
Northwest are arranging to give specially
low rates to and from the Portland Car
nival, which runs from Sept. 18 to Oct.
19, and the excursion tickets will be good
for 7 days. This is the longest limit ever
given on snch tickets, and will give peo
ple ample time to see all the sights con
nected with the great exposition.
With twe full military bands, a mili
tary tournament, ahorse show, athletic
sports, exhibits of mining, agriculture,
horticulture and manufacturing, a full
midway, fireworks, and an array of
amusement attractions, the Carnival will
be one of the greatest events of the sea
eon, and the admission fee is going to be
only 25 cents, 10 cents for children .
