LEADING TO ANARCHY.
We do not teach the assassiua-,
tioa of rulers. Radical anarchists
advocate it, but it is not as a ten
ant of properly understood an
archism. This, in substance, is
the language of Emma Goldman,
the high priestess of anarchy. I
was induced to kill the president
by hearing the lectures and read
ing the books of Emma Gold
man. This is the substance of
the assassin's explanation of his
act.
In each of thess seemingly ad
verse statements there is truth.
The Goldman woman is shrewd
enough' to coinpre iend that the
safest and most efficient means of
inducing followers to accept as
sassination of rulers as a necessary
article in the creed of anarcny is
to disclaim any such purpo.e.
She seeks to render men aissatis
fied with their condition. She
exoatiates upon the tyranny of
the privileged classes, the toil,
poverty, suffering and intolera
ble condition of the proletarian
class. These things exist be
cause of our monstrous social sys
tetn. All forms of government
are simply organized expressions
of tyranny and wrong. The rul
ing class will not voluntarily
give up its domination. All
peaceful means have proved to
be inadequate to remove the ills
inflicted upon the masses. The
existing social order must be
overthrown, must be utterly de
stroyed, and force is the only
remedy remaining.
She does not teach assassina
tion of rulers; Oh! no, no. Men
who believe in that are radicals;
men who practice it are lunatics
and objects of sympathy and pity.
Like Antony, over the dead body
of Caesar, she skillfully plays
upon the ignorance ana preju
dices of men, arouses their worst
passions and stirs ' them up "to
such a sadden flood of mutiny'
that murder assassination be
comes a nxed purpose, it is an

by smart, cowardly demagogues,
and is always fraught with dan
ger.
This danger is intensified when
the offender is a woman, for de
i ference to women is characteristic
of American men. They are
proud of this distinction, and it
is exceedingly difficult for them
to learn that there are women
and women. We must learn
that the woman who unsexes her
self by disseminating anarchy
should be regarded merely as
human female of a most danger
ous type.
The attitude of public senti
ment encourages anarchy, for it
induces disregard of law and con
tempt for our institutions.
Our attachment to lree speech
has become an exaggerated, high
pitched sentiment. Fearful that
we may seem to fetter so dear a
thing, w permit the privilege to
be grossly abused. Worse than
this: We ourselves set the" ex
ample. We give free rein to
partisan rancor and strife and
bitterness, we cnarge corrup
tion, selhshnass, tyranny, oppres
sion, and utter lack of patriotism,
upon our political opponents. We
assail every public policy but our
own as in the interest of some
hateful class, or designed to de
stroy our dearest rights. . An ex
ecutive lawfully chosen by the
people, a court far removed from
just suspicion of its integrity in
terprets and executes reasonable
and wholesome laws against or
ganized areon, murder and terror
ism; an Altgeldt, a Ientz in
veighs against "government by
injunction," and by inflamma
tory harangues and incendiary
speech incite men to continue
their violence and lawless course.
Even reputable and influential
newspapers join the cry, and
through desire for notoriety, or
actuated by low, sordid partisan
purposes, add fuel to tae fires f
lawlessness, socialism and an
archy. Freedom of speech is a
sarrpfl rierhK hrit it is feicrh timp
we should recognize the truth
that every abuse of it is an as
sault upon the right itself. We
must reform' ourselves on this
matter. We must cease to aid
and abet any form or expression
of lawlessness; must ceasa our
senseless opposition to men who
.are as patriotic as ourselves, and
to policies which probably are as
wise as any of our own.
It is a pitiable spectacle when
one United States senator public
ly boasts of laws violated and
fraud and intimidation systematic
cally practiced for partisan pur
poses, and another asserts that he
feels no sympathy for a stricken,
.dying president Let us nope,
for manhood's sake, their con
stituencies will rebuke them as
they deserve.
Too long have we been blind
to the consequences which, soon
er or later, follow these things.
Surely, the cruel murder of our
president will cause mea .to
consider the effect of our too
great indifference to the numer
ous abuses of p:ivilege and the
easily condoned violations of
law ; which lead up to such
dreadful consequences.
Under the shadow of the in
describable sorrow and humila
tion which rests upon us let ali
true patriots resolve that every
incitement to lawlessness shall be
made odious, and that all crea
tures teaching destruction of our
government and overthrow of our
serial and political institutions
shall be meted swift and relent
less punishment.
A PAIR OF FOOLS.
Mrs. Carrie Nation said in pub
lic, when she heard that the
president had been shot, that she
hoped he would die a9 he was a
friend of brewers.
A Baptist minister in New
Hampshire, according to a press
report,, said in his sermon that
God's hand had guided the at
tack on the president because he
had not suppressed the liquor
traffic in the Philippines.
Our prohibition friends should
start the Fool Killer after these
people before they become more
mischievous.
The Big Dryer.
The prune dryei of the Benttm
County Prune Co. was put in
operation yesterday. This is be
yond deupt the largest prune
dryer in the world. In order to
keep it rtlnning at its full capac
ity nearly 100 hands will be em
ployed.
There are ten tunnels in the big
dryer; each tunnel is .80 feet in
length and will hold a little over
200 bushels of prunes. The dry
er will receive over 2, 000 bush-
als of green fruit at One time and
under the most favorable condi
tions it is possible to turn this
amount out in twenty-four hours.
To be ; conservative, one may
safely state that the daily output
of the dryer, after Everything is
in running order, will be from
1,200 to 1,500 bushels daily.
The dryer is heated by steam
run through "three-quarter-inch
pipe. For this purpose; 15, 000
feet of pipe was used.
There was originally over 17,
000 trees in the big orchard, but
some died and it is 'now estima
ted that there are ia the neigh
borhood of 16,000. Some of the
trees are thought to bear ten bu
shels of prunes, and Manager
Johnson places the average at
three bushels per tree. This es
timata gives in the vicinity of
50,000 bushels as the total yield
of the orchard.
The company have been at
gteat expense to build their enor
mous dryer and equip it as thor
oughly as they have and deserve
goed weather, good crops and a
good market. In fact, Mr. John
son has already beeH offered a
pretty, fair price for this years
crop. It is figured that at a fair
price the yield f the big orchard
this year will be worth, between
$25,000 and $35,008.- To those
