THE MM GAZETTE. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1901. TRUSTS AND RECIPROCITY. An exchange says: "it is bet ter for ths Oregon famier that protection be sacrificed on the great manufacturing trusts, rath er than on the agricultural pro ducts selected for slaughter in the pending reciprocity treaties. If the great manufaclunnr; . trusts or any of them are abusing the advantages protectibu gives them they will be promptly shorn of protection, and that by the republican party. How this will be a sacrifice of protection is not apparent. It will be neces sary to deny the benefits of pro tection to such trust?, if r.ic'i ex ist, in the interest of protection itself, for the encouragement of such combinations is no part of the system of American protec tion. This withdrawal of protection will include not only the great manufacturing trusts but also in dividuals, companies and firms which no longer need the help of protection, or are misusing its benefits. This will be done with out reference to the pending reci procity treaties. What agricultural products are selected for slaughter are not named. Of this our farmers may be fully assured: Never in the whole history of our tariff legis lation have we had a tariff law which was so comprehensive in its scope, and so symmetrically adjusted to all our interests, whether manufacturing or agii culture, as the present, or Ding ley Tariff Act of 1897. This symmetry will be preserved. There will be no slaughtering of any interest for the benefit of any other interest. Reciprocity will stand on its own merits in every instance. Whatever concessions we make through reciprocity will bring equivalent concessions to us; otherwise reciprocity would would be a farcial misnomen It is strangely inconsistent that free-traders snould oppSse reciprocity, which, so far as it is applied, is free trade on equal terms. This, however, does not satisfy ths honest: theoretical free-trader, who demands the re moval of all tariffs, except mere ly nominal ones for the purpose of raising revenue, and the open ing of our home markets to un restricted exploitation by foreign pradncers. i ne country Has nad severa experiences from nearly free trade conditions, ode, indeed, quite recently, and it is safe to say we shall be in no haste to re peat them. Our home markets will be preserved as fully as in all justice they should be, to the skill and industry of our own producers. II is altogether probable that reciprocity will engross more of the time and discussions of con gress at the coming session than will be given to general tariff re vision. Under Sec. 4 of the tar iff law there are several reciproc-H lty treaties pending. It is ex pected the enemies of protection will oppose these. Even now they are manifesting such a pur pose. The Gazette will en' deavor to keep its readers advised from time to time upon this sub ject. We would suggest that evory farmer and mechanic procure a copy of the tariff law of 1897, so that he may readily decide who espouses the true interests of our producers. HOW CHICAGO VIEWS IT. The Chicage Tribune says: "Why should the skilled workers cripple themselves and their fam ilies, cripple the hosts of work men whose employment depends on their remaining at work, and cripple the tradesmen who live On the custom of mill men, in a fruitless effort to aid Mr. Shaffer to unionize some mills down in Pennsylvania?" The Chicago workers could not see why they should do these things, so they continue at work. Are Land Poer. Observation shows that there are Some mea who, even in . the Willamette valley, can make large farms pay better than small farms. , A large majority of the farmers are, however, at present covering too much ground.
