MENACES -TO THE HOME.
The home is the chief corner
stone upon which rests everv
thing in our social aud politic A
life worth perpetuating. What
ever menaces it or impairs its
wholesome influence endangers
our verv national existence. In
temperance and gambling are'
terrible enemies to home and
home life, but they are recogniz
ed and' organized war is made on
them. Public opinion holds
these vices in such detestation
that they do not now menace the
feome in nearly so large a meas
ure as formerly. The expressed
determination of transportation
companies and of owners of mills
and "factories using complicated
machinery to employ none but
temperate men is a mighty stride
toward home protection against
the evils of intemperance.
Of course, whatever works
widelv extended hindrance to
marriage is inimical to the home.
There are conditions arising out
of our advancement in civiliza-
discourage early marriages and
induce increasing numbers of
men and women to lead lives of
celibacy.
The increase of wealth and the
greater prevalence of luxury and
ease is such a condition. Young
people are not now willing to be
gin, as their parents did fifty
years 80, at the foot of the lad
der and by mutual endeavor
through industry and wise frugal
ity rear a family and gain a mod
est competency. They must be-
ein life under no less desirable
conditions than the young we-
man has under the parental roof.
This may require long waiting
and often does result in ultimate
" estrangement and celibacy.
women, dependent in whole or
part upon their own exertions,
may now support themselves
doubtless induces many women
deliberately to choose an unmar
ried life. She finds she can sup
port herself comfortably, be quite
her own master, escape the cares
of rearing a family and the possi
ble scandals of a divorce.
. The tase with which divorces
may be obtained in nearly all
the states is a national shame
and reproach. Knowing that
the matrimonial bonds can
quickly be sundered, multitudes
heedlessly, recklessly contract
marriage, quickly repent, are di
vorced and are at liberty to make
another contract on trial. Under
such conditions marriage becomes
little more than legalized prosti
tution, and is utterly devoid of
the home element. The ease of
divorcement is a constant menace
to the home.
At present there seems to be a
growing purpose to displace
monogamy with polygamy. We
notice this in London and in some
portions of the United States,
The advocates of polygamy have
never been so numerous and ac
tive in the propagation of their
theories in the English metropo
lis as they are now. Every arga
metit possible iu condemnation of
monogamy is adduced. The
tone of public sentiment is low
ered and instances of conjugal in
fidelity find unlawful alliances
multipW. In England the prac
tice of morganatic or "left-hand
ed" marriages by the nobility
has exerted a terribly demoral
izing influence on the masses and
made unlawful alliances and lm
moral relations between the sexes
less offensive among all classes
than Americans can well com
prebend.
In this country monogamy has
not been assailed except by. a few
self-styled "free thinkers" and
the Mormon church. The mighty
protest of our American women
against seating the Mormon rep
resentative, Roberts, in congress
relieves us irorn any tear ol po
lygamy, but there is yet so much
loose, easy sentiment touching
the marriage relation that we
must regard it as the most insidi
ous and dangerous enemy which
threatens the American home.
A VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION.
It would be a most valuable
contribution to political economy
if those who babble on matters of
which they have little under
standing would teach how strikes
may be conducted without loss.
To the ordinary comprehension it
would require a legal suppression
ef all labor unions.
After all it is not of great con
sequence. The trusts can easily
recoup their less from the con
sumer, and as for the workman,
he can go. . That a strike which
did not increase wages has never
heretofore increased the cost of :
the commodity to- the consumer ,
cuts no figure; "it is bound to .do !
so in time.: An ounce of thought-1
less assertion is "sf more value '
than tous of practical experience
and years of close observation.
