ANOTHER REVISION.
Another revision of the Bible
has recently been made, this time
Tinder the authority of the Estab
lished Church of England and by
the Ions and patient labors of.
Some of the most learned and
ious men in that eclcsiastical i
body. The purpose seems to:
have been to produce a bible
which, being the work of her
own best qualified scholars, would
be acceptable to the adherents of
that church snd pissibly to the
English people. It is evidently
intended to give it the badge of
ftutorily as in the case of the
'Bishops' BibW" published iu
1568, crof "Kinfj Jaincs' Bible"
published in 161 1. This last, as
every one knows, is the present
Common English Bible.
A few years since eminent En
glish and American scholars gave
tis as nearly a perfect version of
the Bible as modern scholarship
tan produce. This is known as
the "Revised Version." So far
it has attained a comparatively
limited use and it may be many
years before it supplants the
'Authorized Version"" of King
James.
It is most remarkable how the
people cling to this version.
Had it not been prepared and
published by kingly authority
it would not now receive
liny greater veneration by En
glish speaking protestants than
floes the Bishops' Bible. Con-
dieted of containing theus
finds of errors and showing mark
ed complaisance to the notions of
the King yet it is accepted as
comine direct from God. It is
in fact not a translation but a re
vision of the versions then in use,
These versions are proved to have
been only translations Of the Vul
- gate - Latin. Speaking of the
New Testament, the Greek text
with which it was compared was
a compilation -of eight manu
scripts only, all ot which were
written after the tenth century,
and which are now regarded by
the ablest scholars as having but
slight authority. The Received
Greek Text, or "Textus Recep
tus' ' was made up from these
manuscripts and is now admitted
to bs the very worst Greek text
existing in a printed form. The,
. number of Greek manuscripts
"now known and which have been
examined is about seven hundred,
Some of these are very ancient.
being of the fourth century. Of
course they are very valuable and
afford far better means of obtain
ins a correct Greek text than
King James' translators possessed
These manuscripts have been
very carefully and laboriously
edited by a number of critical
scholars who have given the re
sult of their labors to the world.
Dr. J. J.'Griesbach, wh devoted
over thirty years to this work,
has given us. perhaps, the most
desirable Greek text of the New
Testament. Scholz and Tischen
dorf are also recognized as critics
of the highest authority.
In at least one remarkable in
Stance tne revisers 01 mis new
English version seem tS have fol
. lowed Tisckendorf. We refer to
the last twelve verses of Mark's
gospel. .', These they reject as
spurious. The whole passage is
wanting in the Vatican manu
script and in many other ancient
copies. Griesbach regards it as of
very doubtful authority but re
tains it in his text. , It is retain
ed in ournew or Revised Version.
Tischendorf rejects it,
Of course Greek scholars will
not be disturbed by this- action,
but it is not at all improbable it
will meet the opposition of many
adherents to the English church.
Here the testimonv of one of the
synoptic gospels and the most cir
cumstantial account . of Jesns'
resurrection, His promise of spec
ial powers and . immuaities and
His command to "Go forth into
all the world, and preach the gos
' pel to every creature" are declar
ed to be spurious and are excised.
These, have been favorite
find much quoted passages to
prove the . truth of all these
things. For many . years they
have been regarded as "the un
erring word of God." It may
require a long period before the
church will accept the change,
tor even Christians have their
idols. It is likely to be regarded
fis an onslaught upon the inspira
tion of the Scriptures. It is not.
It is an honest and "highly intelli
pent effort of Christian scholars
to free the truth from all associa
tion with error that men may ac
cept it in full faith.-
If the doctrine of the resurrec
tion depends wholly upon this
passage for proof,
0 much the
worse for the doctrine; if foreign
missions have no other authority
then so much the better for home
missions; if men must cease to
believe in the plenary inspiration
of the Eible they yet may believe
it to be inspired in the same sense
as our Declaration of Indepen
dence, our Federal Constitution
and Lincoln' j speech at Gettys
burg. We need not fear the oblitera-
tion of any truth, for all truth is
eternal a id indestructible as its
Author. The Bible will ever
contain all the moral and spirit
ual truth necessary to man's high
est welfare. Because of this,
after the most searching and care
ful revision, it will yet remain
"The Eternal Word."
The democrats are talking
of starting a big democratic
daily paper in Portland. What
is the matter with the Ore
gonian? It believes in free trade.
So do the democrats. It hates
McKitaley. So do the demo
crats. It damns every man who
has acquired wealth in any line
of business effected by a tariff.
So do the democrats. It con
demns every motiopoly, benefi
cial or otherwise, except its Own.
So do the democrats. What iu
thunder do the Portland demo
crats want, anyhow? The Dalles

Poor Lo.
The passing of the noble red
man is brought to miud airesu
by the following item in the Al
bany Herald, cealiflg with one
of these children of 'nature whose
childhood was passed in this
county:
Jim Wheeler, an old-time In
dian, was in Albany yesterday on
his way to Brownsville. This
was his first visit ta this city in
26 years. Jim was raised by
James Wheeler, near Suvef , and
was quite a familiar figure in this
part of the country years ago.
Jim we.nt to school over near the,
Wheeler farm, but the "pale-
faced" children laughed at their
dusky brother and he couldn' t
stand the joshing. He staid
away from home one night and
Mr. Wheeler whipped him when
he came back. This act offend
ed the red youth and the next
day he left for the Grand Ronde
reservation and has remained a
part of the. tribe e?er since. He
:l has been married five times and
has a large family. The old
time Indian is rapidly becoming

Question Answered.
Yes, August Flower still has the
largest sale ef any medicine in the
civilized world. ' Your mother and
grandmothers never thought of
using anything else for indigestion
or biliousness. Doctors were scarce
and they seldom heard of appen
dicitis, nervous prostration or heart
failure, etc. They used August
Flower to cleanse out the system
and stop fermentation of undi

that is all they took when feellnp
