were it true. We don't be
lieve it. The merchants of this

inent merchant of this city will
receive 30,000 pounds of 'wool
withia the next . few days for
which he is to pay 1 cents per
pauhd. If the Independence
merchants are willing to pay
cash, as do the merchants of
Corvallis, and pay a cent more
than they do here, they can have
all the wool in Gorvallis. The
fact is, that the merchants ol
this city arc paying as much for
wool as are the merchants of Al
biny, Independsnce, Monroe,
and other ueighbering towns.
Again in Service.
On her up-river trip, Friday
evening, the R.uth, in "kicking"
Over a river bar near Eola, had
the misfortune to break a bucket
oat of her paddle-wheel. She
undertook to reach Albany in
ner aisataiea condition, and suc
ceeded in doing so, but her wheel
kept going to pieces en route,
and when she had arrived at Al
bany it was considered unwise to
attempt to reach, this city. Con
sequently, she remained there
over sight and left for Portland,
Friday, being able to go down
the river, while the condition of
her wheel would not allow her te
undertake to proceed farther Hp,
She arrived at the metropolis all
right.
J. lie trouble was that she was
still carrying her deep water
wheel that "stuck down below
the bottom of the boat. At Port
land this ' whtel . was readjusted
aad repaired suitable for operat
ing in shallew water, which will
permit her to remain on this run
for some time yet. She was re
pairtd ia time to leave Portland
Saturday evening, arriving in
Corvallis Sunday. Yesterday
she went down on her regular
schedule and it is the mtentioa
to bold her as close to her old
time table as the stage of water
at this season of the year wil
fsrait. .
Pioneer Association.
If the 2Qth annual reunion of
the Oregon Pioneer Association
this year comes up to expecta
tions, It will be the most success
ful reunion in the history of the
organization.
"If letters of inquiry and
promises are any criterion," said
secretary George H. Himes a few
days ago, "the forthcoming re
union, June 14, will be the equal
of any of past years, if not the
most successful .we have held.
While it is true that many of the
old timers are - dropping by the
wayside, the loss to the associa
tion from death is not so great as
might be expected. Fully four
fifths of the pioneers who have
died were not identified with the
association. The association it
self perhaps did not lese over 20
members, and as from 80 to 100
additions to our membership rolls
are received annually, the gain
is greater than the loss. During
my recent trip through the Val
ley I met fully 100 pioneers, who
have never affiliated with the as
sociation, who declared their in
tention of coining to the reunion
this year. This leads me to. be
lieve that the attendance will be
gratifyingly large."
It is expected that a number
of pioneers ot Benton county
will attend.
What Was Resolved.
During the closing session of
the Oregon State Grange, which
convened in Albany last, it was
resolved that the State Grange
ask the board of regents of the
Oregon Agricultural College to
provide the means and sufficient
" funds to enable the members of
the experiment station staff and
professors of the college t estab
lish a farmers' reading course on
the Cornell plan.
Another resolution, touching
O A C, was that the board of re
gents of the college be requested
to set. aside a sufficient sum of
money from the funds of the in
stitution fo provide for the prep
arationby the members of the
station staff, of leaflets for list in
the public schools.

their natural course of development, and
quietly work out their owu-deslisy,"
The secretary! report will show the
steady increase in membership we have
made durinj; the year, aad the general
condition of the c sib.

We have lost a few members by re
moval from the city, and I am happy to
report that "deaths icy finger" has not
entered our ranks.
This is the only club in the state, and
I might add in the United States, where
so much is to be gained, with such a
small outlay, and the only surprise is
that our hall is net inadequate l hold
the members, when we take into con
sideration the -vast amount to be gained
for the nominal sum of fifty cents per
year.
The addition of the library has been a
valuable acquisition, not only has it
strengthened us in number, but has
proved a siarce of pleasure and profit to
the members as well as to the firemen.
I would lecommend to the club to give
this department their support, both
financially and otherwise,
To keep the library popular, we must
constantly add new books. Through the
kindness of the Corvallis Dramatic club,
we .were able to add a large number this
year.
The social department lias strengthen
ed our club and has been a source of
pleasaut diversity to all who attend.
As far as the needs of our club are
concerned, we all know that our kitchen
fs entirely too small, especially are we
reminded of this fact (to use the lan
guage of one of our members) oa eating
day. Duriag the past year we have
made our culinary department very
much more comfortable by the purchase
of dishes, coffee pots, etc., and I would
suggest the purchase of a few more fold
ing tables, as we bava found them a great
convenience. -: ' -- .
The main object of the club (service at
fires) fortunately has not been required
but once during the current year. ;. Our
city is indeed to be congratulated upon
its deliverance from this deadly foe.
I have served in the capacity of your
president for three years, and I take this
means of thanking the members for
their hearty support, and particularly
the executive committee, who have at
all times been ready and willing t ren
der me every aid possible. Wishing the
club continued success and trusting my
successor in office will be able to do mre
than I. With many thanks to all, I sub
mit the above.
Secretary reports 10 regular and one
special meeting held during the year.
Fourteen active and three honorary
members have been added, four have re
signed, two havo been dropped. We
now have 101 members in good standing.
