THE C0RVALL1S GAZETTE. TUESDAY. JUKE 4, 1901. SENATORIAL ASFIRANIS. - It is yet too early to indicate who is most like to succeed Sen aior pimon. laax nesnouia ae- sire re-election is natural and legitimate, but there are several men who are looked upon as as pirants for the office, and doubt less there are others yet in perdue. It is certain that Mr. Simon will not be re-elected without a contest. Sol Hirsh and C. W. Fulton are quite certain to be candidates, and Mr. Hermann and Judge Ca- ples are said to be entertaining dreams of representing Oregon in trie u. o. senate, so tn? incum bent is bo ind to mtct all sorts of opposition to his re-election. It is well understood that either Mr. Hirsh or Mr. Fulton will be very acceptable to Senator Mitch ell, and will receive his support. Of these two it is probable Mr. Hirsh would be more acceptable, lor ne is not- a trained lawyer, so his legal acumen would not ena ble him to pluck honors from Mr. Mitchell. It is asserted, too, that in the event of Mr. H. W. Corbett declining to enter the race Mr. Hirsh will receive the pow erful support of the Oregonian. We are much inclined to doubt this, for the Oregonian is about as difficult to capture as the wild man of Borneo, and besides this there is material for an U. S. senator within the sound of its own press room. C. W. Fulton is a lawyer. It is claimed that his candidacy would appeal to the young men of the party. Why this should oe so is not apparent, but he is energetic, of plausible address and has quite a personal follow ing. Binger Hermann will probablv enter the race, but cannot expect Mitchell's support, for he is too ambitious to always play the mu sic set Dy Mr. Mitcneii, and no risk of other strains than his must be incurred. . John F. Caples would strongly appeal to the old guard, and he has many qualifications for sena tor but it is doubtful if he has any aspirations in that direction, It is not certain that Mr. Cor batt will again be a candidate If he should be, it is given out that Senator Simon will not seek the nomination, but will support Mr. Corbett. it is asserted tnat no man can be nominated and elected without the support of Mr. Mitchell. The Gazette doss not believe this; it does not believe the republican party of Oregon is willing to ac cept the domination of any one man, and least of all of Mr. Mitchell. He cannot control Portland and Multnomah county as he did a year ago. The Port land city charter will not present opportunities for partisan dicker in the next legislature. The primary election law drawn to perpetuate the anti-Simon, anti Corbett interest will fail of its purpose. - The republicans of Multnomah county will not again be cajoled into giving even a little support to men so entirely destitute of political honor and principle as the majority of that county's delegation in Jhe last legislature proved themselves to be. The republican party of the state, out side of Multnomah county, will never again permit factional quar rels there, or the selfish ambition of one man anywhere to place it in such a position that it must again incur the responsibility for, and face the odium of such utter ly vicious and corrupt legislation as was attempted and accom plished at the last session of the legislature. We believe there is vitality and virility enough in the party to compel vaulting, selfish ambition to stand aside, and to throttle factious opposition to the will and purposes of the majority. Especially let the republicans ot Multnomah county see to this, then they may reasonably hope to name the man who will be chosen next U. S. senator... The Gazette intends to keep an observant eye on certain am bitious schemes which bode no good to republicanism, and which it will fiercely and fearlessly op pose. For the Country's Good. A farmers' institute was held at Monroe recently. It was the first meeting of this kind that was ever held in that place. The attendance was good and matters Of importance to the farming elasses were discussed. Among others, Dr. James Withycombe afl Professors Kniseiy dud Kent, OA C, atteaded this meeting. Hon. E. H. Belknap made the address of welcome, and the re sponse was made by Dr.' Withy combe. - Prof. Kniseiy gave a very ' in teresting talk on "Some Soi' Problem," which proved ve-rv instructive. He spoke of drain- age, saving tnat it a plant has plenty of available plant fowl and the drainage is poor the crop ' will not be good. The professor - 1 a 1 , - saia taat ne iiaa conducted more . than 350 experiments on farms and found more poor ' fai mers i' than poor farms, and .in many ; cases found fertilizers not' neces-! sar3', the difficulty bc-ing that the 1 farmers had robbed the soil ef , humus: If the soil is kept in : the proper physical condition it ' will hold moisture. ! The subject of "Profit ia ; Dairying" was a&ly handled by. Prof. Kent. He said, ameng other things: "Iu computing ' the returns from a cow it is eus tomary to allow the price of the calf, the value of the skiinxied milk, and the manure produced J to oftsfc ' tht Inlinr n 1 1 ! rft.-I in I canny tor the animal: hence. the amount received for butttr. cheese or milk sold, less the value of the food consumed, may be considered as the net returns. The creameries and cheese fac tories furnkti a ready means of determining the gross returns from a herd, and a little caretul figuring will gife. a very ' close approximation ot the value of the feed consumed. It then becomes a comparatively- easy matter to determine the average net re turns per cow, but averages are sometimes misleading, and the most successful dairymen apply the Babcock test and scales." Dr. Witbycombe gave a brief discourse on "Diversified Farm ing." ' He said that this is a pro gressive age, and , the past two decades have seen astounding reyolations in merchaatile pur suits and manufacturing enter prises, in. fact, this holds good in every department of . human energy, with the possible excep tion of farming. Among; our farmers the same old systems of exclusive grain-growing seem to prevail, and but slight deviations from the well beaten path f our ancestors are noted. . ' Dusty Picnic. The big union picnic of the W. of W. and the sixteen school districts of the southern part of our county was successfully held last Saturday. The W. of W., Dnsty Camp 429 made a reoord for thrift, industry and entertain ment. Much "of the credit for such a successful gathering is due the boys from the Dusty Camp. The school furnished one of the best literary programs ever rendered in Benton cousty. There were two bands present to famish music- for the day. The procession was very pretty. It extended over a quarter ef a mile. The contests were: chop ping contest, won by Philemath Camp; sawing contest, won by Dusty Camp; tug of war, won bv Dusty Camp; Clay pigeon shoot, won by Philomath team. The other contests were, nail driving. drinking, cracker .' eating," and apple eating. . The. well dressed man "sets there." Come and see our new spring suits. Nolan & Callahan. Ribbon Sale.
