    THE UMIIS GAZETTE.
FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 1901.
ON WHAT BASIS?
On what basis will the demo
crats party of Oregon efiect re
organization? This question is
before the leaders of that party,
especially in Multnomah county.
It is not the province nor the
purpose of the Gazette, even if
it could, to render any assistance
in this matter.
As a matter of fact so many
diverse faotlons are found in that
party, all clamoring for recogni
tion and each striying for domi
nance that its reorganization will
be exceedingly difficult if not
actually impossible. This is
especially true sinea several of
the issues it presented have been
decided at the ballot-box by ad-
versa majorities so great as to
eonstitate a final verdict. No
new issne which Carries the
promise of victory has been nor
is likely to be found. By some
means, however, not easily un
derstood, tha leaders hope to hold
tao pirty together hoping that
tie republican party in Mult
nomah county will be so divided
at the next general election that
tile democrats ma slip into
power, or at least share the spoils
of victory with one of tha repub
Iican factions. The Hope of par
ticipating in the spoils is, as the
democratic party is now consti
tnted, its strongest incentive to
cohesion and action. This, how
ever, is a vagae hope when built
oa the hope of republican dis
sention, for it is not at all proba
ble that any dissentioa will ex
ist among republicans.
Fot years the republican parly
in Meltaomah county has not
Bad so little cause for aissention
ts it now has. Bach of the late
factions has been recognized and
given a sharepf party honors and
trust. No one has been read
cut of the party nor excluded
from its councils because of be
ing "a Simon man" or "a Mitch
ell man," because he opposed
tie city charter enacted by the
late legislature; because of the
consolicatioa of county offices,
aor for any then reason.
What is true of the party in
Ifaltaemak county is equally
true of it throaghout the state
It never had less cause for dis
station than it now has. For
years the state has not been so
ably represented in the councils
f the nation. Our members ot
congress are industrioas, active
and alert in looking after the in
terests ef their respective dis
tricts. Our senators are both
men Of recognized ability, in
dustry, experience and influence.
uur wnoio delegation is in
political accord with the par
ty and ' fairly in harmony
with the administration. The
defeat of Mr. Corbett for
senator left no bitterness behind
it He and his adherents are
too honestly repabliean in prin
ciple to permit mere personal
disappointment to turn them
aside from party fealty. The
election of Mr. Mitchell provokes
no antagonism. Our senators
will work harmoniously together
for the best interests of the state
and in upholding republican
principles. Self-interest, if no
other reason, will keep them In
harmony. There will be no
party dissention from this direc
tion.
We heard a democrat say re
cently: uThe Oregonian will
oppose and belittle both sena
tors." Doubtless the wish was
father of the thoaght. It is safe
to say that the Oregonian will
offer ao factious opposition to
either. It knows that both are
able men. It has known Mr.
Simon qaite all his life and
kaows him to bo a man of irre
proachable character, of remark
able industry and more than
average ability. The Oregonian
surely has no personal reason for
opposing Mr. Simon. If it, in
deed, once opposed Mr. Mitehell
n personal grounds, that is long
since past and will not be re
newed. Unless our senators
make some very improbable and
bad break it is altogether resson
ble to believe the Oregonian
will be found leading the repub
lican press in holding up their
hands.
It is without doubt thai demo
crats who hope to ride to victory
because of republican faction
will be doomed to disappoint
ment. THlPV miicf fin A n
'live, national issue which the'
'. dominant party refuses to meet.
11 must purge itseli ot its mis
chievous isms; it must recall its
Clcvelands, Carlisles and Whit
neys to its councils.
So hopeless is this task that
wo are doubly thankful that it
floes not .devolve upon us.
