Mnt ramus GUI L FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 1901. CAUCUS OR CONFUSION. for Ac th tim for the session of the legislature approaches, there are some ideas being exenangea regarding the propriety of repub- l,'nn member of the legislature " n 1 . assembling in caucus to appoint a nominee fn nloi-c hpfnrp thp candidate for Iporiclntiirp AS TTnitPd States senator. This paper has no hesitancy in sayingfand while it is tough and Jndi- taat we oeueve u is mc uuiy 01 t reDublicans to meeft in caucus on all party matters and abide by the result expressed by the rna- lontv assembled. This is in harmony with republican doc ttines. The caucus and coh- vention are the methods adopted 3 I, 1:.: "Ir ?-" ... 3 . rn7.-n..-t - XCLuuui.aii Many. vviguuui kim- gamzation we must have con-1 fusion. We must either aGt with those who organize, or with those who rjromofce Idiserganiza- tion and confusion. Bii1rr1 in o-rpar Pvr.Pn.if to trip states involved, failure to elect TTnitea States senators, besides wasting time, and preventing much needed legislation. To be ruled and governed by the ex pressed will ot the maionty is one of the fundamental princi pies upon which our republican government is founded. It is diffioult to understand how re publicans can consistently ex cuse themselves from meeting in t CaUCUS with their fellow reoubii- cans to pass upon party ques tions or how they can refuse to abide by the deoision of the ma- majority alter a. question is passed upon. While it is true that if we go into caucus or con vention, we may afterwards find that our choice is beaten, yet that is the inevitable result of I all contests, that some one must be beaten, but it is nevertheless the duy of all in touch with re publican doctrine to abide by the decision of the majority. METALS PRODUCED. The Engineering and Mining Journal gives the total of the metals produced in the United States in 1900, valued at $5oq,. 800,992, and the value of -non- mteallio substances was $755,- 680,991. The more important of said metals was gold, $78,658,755; silver, $37,058,248; 615,756,802 pounds of copper valued at $100, 1S4i34.S; 251,781 tons ot lead, 1..-J c o valUB"ay f,uua,uv3,ii)oi0 wiuuiiiuL, '"' "-,- 33; I39I4)55 tons Of p:g-iron, at 238,078,737, ana Ot tne non- metallic products were 274,047,- 77 5 tons Of coal, bein the lars est amount ever produced by any country in one year. The total gold product of the world in 1900 was $256,462,438, of which the United States took the lead with $78,658,755; Aus tralia, $75,283,215; Canada, $26,000,000, and Russia $23,- 090,862. The mining companies paid $51,502,000 dividends and the industrial companies $79,439, 000. The gold and silver mines paid $13,907,000, and petroleum companies $48,816,000. The rate -of interest by the Bank of England was recently raised to 5 per cent, a remarka bly high rate for London, which it is said was dona to stop the outflow of gold to Paris and calls 0 borrowers. The London Sta tist thinks thah New York can spare three So four million sterling to London. It is quite certain that the financial attitude of England and tb8 United States is rapidly changing, so that the United States is becom ing one of the great creditor nations. The Statist very prop rly concedes that the United States will perform a very im portant part, not only in develop ing great industrial problems at - home, but also will have a marked influence in the financial concerns of the world. Thus it is that our beloved country siace the panic stricken times of 1893 96, occasioned primarily by the failure of the Baring Bros., of London, and the dismal fore bodings of 6ur calamity prophets, has become one of the strongest nations of the earth and rapidly approaching the near future when New York, its largest city, will be in fact -the financial cen ter of the world.
