Football is one of the healthi
est of sports when guided by
moderation. It developes the
best of youth, energy, strength,
quickness, self-control and self
oonfidence. Young men who
have played it are better
equipped for the world, both
mentally and physically. It ex
ercises the faculties of cool-headed
ness in. emergency, and of
knowing wha to do on the in
stant. Contrast those who are
players with those who are not,
and the former will . appear to
advantage as to self-reliance,
resolution, aggressiveness and
even-temper. As a character
ouilder, the sport has no super
ior in athletics. The model
football athlete does not shrink
and cringe, but forces a place for
himself, and makes others feel
Ms presence. He is never timid
or painfully diffident, and in this
is unlike many a young man,
otherwise worthy, wuo does not
have the reliance that belongs to
an athlete. Some condemn the
game becaase of an apparent
waste of energy; others because
it is rough. But modern condi
tions require a substitute for the
luxuries of the ax and the saw
buck. Heakh calls for exercise,
aod none of us would prefer that
the youth be so spiritual as to
be satisfied with dumbells and
Indian clubs. If young men
gaiu physically, their energy is
not lost. The game may be
rough, but if it were gentle it
would not be athletics, nor
would the youth be satisfied with
it. Football that is a means and
not an object in itsel-f is admira
ble. As an object it is to be
Ooademned. Our colleges recog
nize this and make mental de
velopement the object and ath
letios the means. With this pur
pos"fct,hey hedge the sport within
certain hoars and seasHfc. They
allow the play of football for a.
month or two in the year ia oi
der to establish health for study.
Thy have found that by this
method stsidents attain better re
Salts. Oregonian.
On December 4th the Oregon
ian issued a large supplement
commemorative of its 50th an
niversary. Acting upon the
Oregonian's contention that "It
is lihe paper's business nob to
praise the good," the Gazette
das refrained from mentioning
the big daily's supplement be
cause it was a tase of praise or
nothing. Nearly every paper in
the state, however, has spoken
in terms of commendation of this
anniversary number, and we
consider the precedent sufficient
ly established for us to violate
the Oregonian's rule, and hear
tily endorse all fhe good things
that have been said of that paper
for its energy and enterprise.

Geo. Cronkite, a former stu
dent of O A C, who fought w?th
the 2nd Oregon's in the Philip
pines, is back again on the is
lands. He came home with his
regiment a year ago last July, but
returned to Manila in company
with his father a few months
ago. The latter, writing to the
Hillsboro Independent, says:
I find the situation all around
much better than I expected.
First, the climate is mild, not
exceeding 90 deg. so tar. Heat
is not oppressive, and one can
stand physical labor as well as in
summer in Oregon, only it is
summer all the time and Decem
ber is as. pleasant as May.
I went to work in a wagon re
pair shop and for two months I
never lost an hour. The first of
this month I was transfered to
the office. I am invoice clerk. I
like the change and already am
caught up with my work.
This archipelago is rich in
natural resources and if opened
to American capital and settle
ment, would prove another El
'lorado. In agriculture, mining
and manufactures, the Spaniards
never got through the surface
crust, so that virgin soils await
the men of pluck and energy.
At present the government is
giving employment in some ca
pacity to all civilians that land
and every vessel from Frisco has
more or less stow-aways. -Carpenters
and blacksmiths are in
demand at $75 per month. We
work only 8 houry, and only jy
in the cuce.
! Geor.-i still works in the wag--jonshop,
but probably will go
1 prospecting about Jan. 1.
As to the heal tii of the people
coming here, I can assure anyone
that they take no more risk than
changing from Oregon to Cali
fornia, or the Gulf States. My
health is excellent.
In Memorials.
The following lines were written by
Mrs. L. A. Nash in memory of Miss
Lucie Pernot and read at the memorial
services receutly held at the Reading
Room:
She has passed the covered way,
Leading to a shining day.
All the mysteries of life,
Good and evil's constant strife,
God is solving it up there;
Hut we miss tier sorely here.
Miss the bright and genial smile,
Cheery words that could beguile
A weary hour or troubled mood ;
With ease her warm heart undei
stood. She'll have ministries up there;
While we miss them sorely here.
Born of life's activity,
Dreading mere passivity;
Apt to work, Strang to lead ;
Duty's sense her only meed.
Death is but an onwards there,
1 As her life was upwards here.
Not a long and weary figkt,
In that vale's dark, shadowy blight.
An angel opened swift the door,
Of the "life foi evermore."
Though we say "good night" down
here,
The angcL bids "good morning"
there.
Love would fain have breathed fare
well, Ere the mystic curtain fell
Listened for a parting word,
Ere was broke the "silver chord.''
But love's content to know her there,
Though it shed the tender tear.
