'TJIOAV, DECEMBER 7,1900.
M
OUR GROWTH UNPARALLED.
On the twelfth of this mouth
the centennial of the formal trans
fer of the national capital to
Washington will be elaborately
celebrated. The governors of all
the states have been asked to par
ticipate in the festivities and the
occasion will be amomorable one.
Prior to the selection of Washing
ton as the seat of government,
the country changed its capital
nearly every time the army com
mander changed his headquarters.
In 1790, the present site on the
Potomac was selected. When the
Sixth Congress closed its first ses
sion on May 14, 1800, in Phila
delphia, it adjourned to meet in
the city of Washington, and the
second session opened there on
November 17th of that year.
History furnishes no parallel to
the wonderful development and
transformation which have taken
place in the United States in the
century just ended. The state of
New York with her population of
7,268,009, contains more people
than the entire Union had by the
census of 18 10. Less than 500,
000 of the 5,000,000 people in
the United States in 1800, were
west of the Alleghenies. The
country's territory extended only
to the east bank of the, Mississip
pi then, and not all of that bank
belonged to us. The whole phy
sical, social and political face of
the United States has been pro
foundly changed in the hundred
years which have passed since the
nation's capital was first planted
among the alder bushes and mor
rasses on the Potomac's banks.

304 votes and Bryan 6,533,080;
MeKinley's plurality, 574,224
MoKinley's vote was larger by
131,210 than four years ago,
Bryan's not as large by 172,284,
ana MCJtunieys plurality was
larger by 303,494.
The prefiibiti&n vote has been
reported officially from 30 states,
including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
Kansas, Massachusetts and Penn
sylvania, but omitting New
York. Iu the 30 states, Woolley,
prohibition candidate- for presi
dent, received 157,690 yotes.
Bid well received 264,562 votrs
in 1892; Fisk. 249,937 in 1888,
and Levering and Bently 144,
663 in 1896.
There is a falling ofl in the
prohibition vote in Connecticut
as compared with 1892, a gain
in Florida and Georgia, a loss of
15 000 in Ohio, a gain of 2,000
in Pennsylvania, and a loss of
3,000 in Wisconsin.
Over 1,000 Filipinos surren

November is bearing fruit in the
islands.
