Commenting upon the rumor
that Dr. Wallace, of Junction,
has placed bonds in New York
for building a railroad from this
city to Eugene, the Portland
Telegram says:
Such a road has been talked
of for years, and a survey has
been made as far south as Junc
tion City along the old govern
ment road.
If such a railroad is built it
will depend upon the Corvallis
fc Eastern for reaching an out
side market, and that market
would be San Francisco. The
freight would have to go over
the new line trom Eugene to
Corvallis;. from there over the
Corvallis & Eastern to Yaquina
Bav. thenoe to San FranoisCo
by steamer. Years ago the
Southern Pacific had arrange
ments with the Corvallis & East
ern, and a steamer line from San
Francisco to Yaquina Bay, by
which it ffave better rates from
'Frisco into the central part of
the Willamette Valley tnan
from Portland to the same terri
tory. Por "land jobbers succeed
ed in ettinsr their riehts finally,
which shut San Francisco oat of
the territorv.
The building of the proposed
read would mean a return to the
old conditions. However, ac
cording to current rumor, there
are several reasoas why such a
road is not feasible. In the first
filace the road musfe depend u
OQ the Corvallis & Eastern and
a steamer line from Yaquina
Bav south for an outlet. As it
is pretty well understood that
the Corvallis & Eastern is con
trolled bv the Southarn Pacific.
it is not likelv the large corpora
tion would furnish an outlet to
a rival line. The only way in
which the new road could hope
to gain any advantage would be
to have positive assurance from
the Corvallis & Eastern that it
would ba given rates over that
line and to San Francisco by
steamer cheaper than the rates
quoted by the Southern Pacific
to Portland. And if it is true,
as generally understood, (that the
Southern Pacifio controls the
Corvallis & Eastefn, there will
be no show of such rates being
obtained.
Reported Activity.
A dispatch from Boise, Idaho,
dated November 29th, states
hat prepartiens are being made
to start grading on the line of
the Corvallis & Eastern road hi
the eastern part of Oregon. It
is said that graders are soon to
be put on between Nyssa, on the
Short Line, and the town of
Vale, Oregon. Fof some time
it has been known that the com
pany has been arranging for
work somewhere along its pro
jected line, bufc this is the first
information reachiug this place
that the field of operations for
the Immediate future is likely to
be so far east.
For some years is has been
the impression fihat, if it were
ever constructed through East
ern Oregon, it would be in con
junction with some' trans-continental
line seeking an outlet.
When the attention of the
officials of the Corvallis & East
tffn raad in the general offices in
Albany was called to the fore
going dispatch they said they
knew knothing of such prepara
tions for construction work, says
the Albany Herald, commenting
oa the above. Manager Stone
said that if this work of grading
is about to begin he knew noth
ing of i.
Mr. Hammond is now in Cali
fornia, and it is Said is going to
New York in a shcrrt time.
The fact that the company has
had surveyors in the field this
Summer, and have relocated the
proposed line, would indicate
that early construction work is
contemplated. Chief Engineer
Cnrtise, of the Oorvallis & East
ern road, will be in Albany with
in a few days to meet Mr. Root,

line has now biem relocated,
the work of the surveyors hav
ing been finished this week.
It would be good news to the
people of Eastern Oregon and

Monroe Items.
The Long Tom river now
lacks only 16 inches of being at
the boating stage. The Mc-
Minnville will maKe the first
trip up when the water rises to
that point, so it is stated.
A petition has been filed with
the clerk ol frtoe court of Benton
county, asking for a free ferry
across the Long Tom nver at
Liverpool, i & nines north from
Monroe. Later a drawbridge
may be constructed at this point.
Monroe is to have a creamery.
George D. Goodhue, manager of
the Salem creamery, will be in
Monroe December 7, to talk up
the project, and as , this is at the
instance of several interested
persons, the result can only be
in favor of the industry. Over
500 cows have already been
promised, and it is most likely
ihat 1000 can easily be secured.
The recent frost did some dam
age to early sown fall ..oats.
Wheat being on higher ground,
has not been injured. House
plants and late gardens received
their share of attention from the
frost, however, and most of them
are things of the past.
