    THE nmiiR HEEfTL
TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 27, 1900
SINCERE AND INSINCERE RE
' FORMERS.
Every eemmunity has it&
Schemer; its little meddling
trickster, who seeks to turn avery
pnbhc enterprise to personal ad
vantage, and whose malign in
fluance is felt in every depart
ment of the bodv oolitic. Is his
ohurch to select a minister?
Sanatimoniouslv, yet designedly,
will he advocate the party whom
he believee will best suit his
purpose. The school board
must be composed of men to his
liking or we hear him advocat
ing a chanjra "for the good of
our schools." The city counoil,
the police officers, the heads of
the fire department, must stand
i perpetual DomDarament, or
shape their actions to fit this
particular individual's ideas of
what will aocrne to the good of
the eommamty in general ana
himself in particular.
The citizen who is inspired
with an honest, earnest, sincere
desire to correct some publio
evil will come out and fight
boldly in the open. Ha has no
sinister motives; no desire for
concealment. He chooses the
wisest and most effective method
tor accomplismng his purpose,
and has an rjye singly for the
fmblio geod. He shirks no re
sponsibility, and permits no
peevish citizen to bleok his
progress. His purpose is a
laudable one; he is honest in
his prosecution of it; his course
in the past has been such as to
command the admiration of the
community; he has the respect
and confidence of his fellow citi
zens. Those who oppose him,
fiad small following and they
are usualiv led bv the aforesaid
schemer. When such a citizen
begins snsh a crnsade, some
thing comes of It. We. never
bear him whining because he
meets opposition. He has noth
ing to fear. But, let the sohemer
have fish to fry. Design is writ
tea ob every move he makes.
He attempts to draw the atten
tion of the public away from his
real purpose. At the first sus
pieion of discovery, however, he
retires frem his position, only to
appreaah the matter from another
direction. He lays the wires,
as,V5 the publio to grasp them,
and ays: "New, let us all prill
together." I
EVIL OF ADVERTISING VICE.
The Gazettk wishes to again
emphasize the fact that more
harm than good is often accom
plished by airing vice throngh
the columns of a newspaper,
evea if conditions exist which
would appear to justify such
publicity. A newspaper which,
Sunday Mercury like, fills its
columns with disgraceful hap
penings greatly exaggerated to
least the eyes f the vulgar, or
accomplish some ulterior object,
is a more serious menace to the
morals of a community than the
evil which it gives the pretence
of striving to correct. If the
moral atmosphere ef a commu
nity has reached a stage where
it needs purifying the news
paper is the last agent to be nsed
as a disinfectant. The Oregon-
lan Das some remarks on this
subject very ranch, to the point
"The prurient reformer is of
all things the most pesti
lential. He insists upon pur
suing evtry devotee Of irregular
pleasure to the farthest retreat,
and spreading the fruits of his
excursions in the pages ef news
papers, where- they serve to ad
vertise the disreputable resorts
and sully the imigiaatio&s of
ure-rniudd women and youth
who have no need to be informed
of such iniquities.
"In Philadelphia a crusade re
sulted in little mere than a thor
ongh advertisement ot nearly
every disorderly house in the
city, and a publication in all the
newspapers of a detailed state
ment frem the reform committee,
including such specifications as
that en street young girls
could be found who habitually
sold themselves to all corners fcrl
50 cents!
"iliese arc disgusting facts, i
but they are the annals of cru
sades against viae which have
been perverted from their first
and commendable purpose by
the tribes of incompetents who
1 lnvaaiably fc-ouie to the front at
'such times. Lst 113 hope that
Bishop Potter will be warned by
these, shipwrecks and steer his
crusade through still deep waters
of safety. The most we ca'n
achieve in this matter is the ar
rest and punishment of black
mailing officials and opsn defiers
of law and decency. Honest
and conscientious enforcement
of police surveillance can be ob
tained through wise methods,
among which indiscriminate ad
vertisement and persecution of
the blackmailers' victims cannot
be numbered."
'The Little Oregon Jersey."
In a good half-tone Rufas
Skipton and a remarkable little
freak of a cow are presented in
the last issue of the Homestead.
The following interesting write
up is also given:
Tz Possibly the greatest curiosity
of the bovine kind to attract at
tention in the Corvallis, Oregon,
section the past season is a cow
that calved jusS one year and
two days after she was born.
Her calf died and she was hauled
on a slcci into a barn where the
best of attention could be given
ine fiomesteaa wrote ot tier on
July 26: "She is now as fat as
pig and playfal as a kitten. She
is growing every day, and gives
two gallons of milk each milk
ing, and promises to. calve the
sscond time before she is two
years old.
"This calf, whioh is trying so
early to assume the responsibili
ues oi tne iuii-nede:ed cew, is
the family pet of Rufus Skipton,
who lives two miles from Philo
math. Mr. Skipton raised her.
her mother and her grandmother.
She is seven-eighths Jersey and
one-eighth Durham. By the
time she is three years old she
will be a wonderful milker. At
present she is regarded as a freak
and as such is commanding con-
siueraDie attention. Sue is
