FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1900-
&&ig
Oar local Bryan organ seems
to be one of a very few papers
in the country that have learned
nothing from the recent election.
Bat then, Vhat was to be ex
pected. The Times announces the fact
that Siandard Oil stock has
advanced in value since Novem
ber 6th, and declares that this is
the result ot election. The price
of sugar has been reduced about
15 per cent since election Has
this been a result of the election,
too? Or did conditions entirely
outside of the pale of politics
have something to do with it?
Now thafr the intoxication of
thi campaign is beginning to
wear away the Bryan press is
coming to see the situation as
the republicans viewed it two
months ago. The Roseburg re
view makes fcllis acknowledge
ment: "Anyway the democratic
party has been ussd to good ad
vantage by W. R. Hearst during
tha campaign to advertise hia
three big yellow journals."
When the voters of the Uni
ted States chose William Mc
Kinley for president, they en
dorsed this plank in the republi
can platform: "We condemn
all conspiracies and combina
tions intended to restrain busi
ness, to create monopolies, to
limit production, or to. control
prices, and favor such legisla
tion as will effectively restrain
and prevent all such abuses,
protect competition and secure
the rights of producers, laborers
and all who are engaged in in
dustry and commerce," and the
oonntry may res assured that so
far as it is in the power of the
best brains in the nation to de
vise effective legislation, and of
the administration to enforce it,
everything possible will be done
to redeem this pledge.
"A majority of the American
people have just voted for a de
fense and a perpetuation of the
trust principle," says an irre
sponsible contemporary, which
contained these words the morn
ing after election: "The Amer
ican people wanted to condemn
trusts. McKinley's preferment
is unusual. It is mainly due to
the refusal of the democrats east
of the Mississippi to accept Bry
an's views on finance. The day
that Bryan forced specific men
tion of free coinage in tho plat
form, he invited defeat. It was
the Hollow Way of O'Hain hat
brought him his Waterloo."
Now what does this jumping
jack believe? Did the people
vofco for a defense and a perpetu
ation of the trust principle, or
did their vote mean a condemna
tion of Brvanism?
What Others Have Done.
Dr. James Withycombe, vice
director of the O A O Experi
ment Station, who is now in the
East, has written a very inter
esting letter to C. H. Markham,
from which the following extract
is taken. It will demonstrate to
the farmers of the valley what
casi be don?, and clearly shows
that some of the Eastern states
have experienced the exact con
ditions that are now confronting
the farmers of the Willamette
Valley. The following is gleaned:
A visit to the dairying seo
tions of these states cannot fail
to impress one favorably, as the
ear marks of prosperity are in
evidence On every hand. To
illustrate this point, perhaps
statistics obtained in Jefferson
county, Wis., will best serve my
purpose. This countw has a
population of about 40,000 aud
there are abnt 40,000 cows lept
in the county, yielding an an
nual revenne from skim-milk,
butter and cheese of $2,000,000.
Before lie advent of dairying
theie grain growing was the
principal agricultural industry.
During this period the average
crop of wheat dropped to about
eight bushels per acre and 6o
per cent of the farms were mort- i
gaged. Since tue
introduction
of dairying the average
yield of
wheat has been brought up to
22 bushels per aere and the
fai nrjrs have 2,000.000 deposi
ted to t-licir cro.iit in the
the county. Tire pb
nomenal
g:wth of the industry in Jshss!
county largely due to the per-;
sonai efforts of ex-Governor
Hoard and to the influence of
his splendid paper, Hoard's'
Dairyman.
After investigating the dairy- j
iug industry here, my couvic-
tions are materially strength- j
ened in the fact that the 1
-, . ... 1 , c: 1
cow win ultimately uccouie iuc :
' corner-stone of agricultural pros-
perity in our state, probably:
more especially so in Western
Oregon.
From here I go East to visit
the principal experiment sta
tions and the o;der dairying sec
tions. What Mr. Stone Said.
Edwin Stone, manager of the
Corvallis & Eastern Railroad,
who is in the city, says 40,000
acres of land have been thrown
open for settlement west of Cor
vallis, toward the Coast Range
slope. In the course of an in
terview, Mr. Stone mentioned
the mining excitement arounu
Detroit, in the Cascade Moun
tains, and the fact that survey
ors were working westward from
the summit of the Cascades to
ward the present terminus of the
Corvallis & Eastern.
The land thrown upon the
market west of Corvallis be
longed to the Geo. S. Coe estate.
It has been taken out of the
courts and placed upon the mar
ket by Coast Laud & Livestock
Co., of which J. K. Weatheiv
ford is secretary. The land is
mostly grazing aud agricultural
land, with a small scattering of
timber.
When asked about the mining
strike near Detroit, Mr. Stone
said he did not want to be quoted
as an authority, but would give
the information for what it was
worth. According to report, a
ledge 100 feet wide has been un
covered, which could b traced
a distance of nearly two, miles.
While in Albany some rock was
sent him for the purpose of hav
ing it assayed in Portland. The
letter accompanying the rock
stated that the ore was taken
from the ledge at a depth ot
three feet. Its assayed $4. 13.
Nine cents of that was silver;
all the balance gold. The new
strike is 58 miles from Albany.
Mr. Stone would not say much
about the surveying party fur
ther than that) they had been in
the interior of Central Oregon
relocating the old survey line of
the Oregon Pacific and that they
were working west. During the
last year his road, he said, had
handled large lumber and log
ging trade. Telegram.
Timber Consumption.
In the reporf of Expert A. J.
Johnson, who was commissioned
to prepare the forestry exhibit
for the Pan-American Exposi
tion, has made a report relative
to the timber resources of Ore
gon. Following is an interest
ing extract from his report, and
relates entirely to the consump
tion of the timber of this state:
Roughly speaking, the total
consumption of timber in the
state for the present year will
amount; to 900,000,000 feet. Of
this quantity the mills are cred
ited with 500,000,000, and the
remaining 400,000,000 covers
that whioh will be used for fuel,
fenae posts, fence rails, railroad
ties aud such miscellanies.
It is interesting: to. note that
jthe mills will consume 100,000,
oqo more feet this year than was
consumed last year. This is
proof that not only have many
new mills been established, but
that all the -old mills, some of
which have been closed, have
been kept running full blast.
Auother interesting faot to note
is that the fuel consumption
almost equals that of the mills'.
Last year the fuel consump
tion was the same aud upon
former years larger. It is only
within the last year that the
mill supply exceeds that of the
fuel supply. Eack of cheap coal
causes 400,000,000 feet of" fuel
to be consumed for fuel every
year. Nearly all the steamboats
running on the rivers, many of
the engines running out of the
eity, and the principal factories
and industries in Oregon use
wood for steam pnrposes. As
soon as a cheap grade of coal is
placed upon the market as is
promised in the near future,
this consumption -will be cut
down to a nominal figure.
