PAYTON Multnomah County TEXT BOOK COMMISSION. Probably one of the most im portant and exacting duties whioh Governor Geer will be called upon to perform during his term of office will be the ap pointment of the new text book commission next January. The governor is very reticent regard ing the composition ot the com mission. In response to recent inquiries he said : "I have, of course no an nouncements to make as to the individuals to be appointed, and shall not make known the names of the members of the commis sion to any person until the ap pointment has been officially announced. I have not yet made up my mind wlicr.n I shall appoint, and shali not until im mediately before the time arrives for action. I consider the nam ing of this commission one of the most important duties I have to perform as governor of the state, and the appointments will nob be made until after the most careful consideration of the re quirements of the office and the qualifications of the mosb avail able citizens of the state who consent to serve in that capacity. "I realize that it will be a difficult matter to perform the duties of the commissioners in a way that will not subject them to some sort of public criticism, and for that reason there may be some difficulty in finding good men willing to make the neces sary sacrifice for the welfare of therefore, I shall probably not asifthe consent of any man be fore appointing him a member of the textbook commission. "The appointees will proba bly be men, who, from their positions as prominent citizens, cannot well refuse to make the sacrifices required of the men who may serve the public in that capacity. "I have had numerous appli cations, both in person and by letter on that commission, but I can see no reason why anj' man can really wish to ssnrve in that capacity, and am not inclined to look with favor upon the ap plication of any man who is anxious for suoh an appointment. "Suggestions and recommen dations from any person inter ested in the welfare of our pub lic sohools have been and will be thankfully received and carefully considered . "Politics shall not have the slightest influence in the selec tion of tho members of the com mission. The best men avail able will be chosen regardless of oartv affiliations. I believe (his commission will be composed of men from difterent seotions ot tne state, ana tnis will be con-1 sidered though not as a con trolling feature. So far as per sonal qualities are concerned, I am inclined to the opinion that the majority of the commis sioners should not be school men. I believe this commission should ba composed of good business men, who also have sufficient educatioaal qualifications to make them good judges of text books. They should be men in whoso honor and integrity the people of Oregon have the ut most confidence and whose mo tives will never be questioned." Hepburn, of Salem, a young man or about eighte.n years of arje put up at the Russ House, and was given a room in which was a trunk belonging to Sam Dugger, who is now at In dependence, says the Albany Democrat. It is said that he pro ceeded to break cpeu the 'trunk, roll up fhe contents and throw them out of the window. He then went down and got them, took them over to the Albany Lunch Counter, where he had left his bicycle, and tied them to the machine, going back to the hotel and going to bed. he was seen by some of the employes of the hotel to throw the tiings down. They notified special policeman, Otto Cielan, who, with Mr. Rowell, arrested the young man and he was placed in the calaboose to await examina tion before Pvecorder Van Win kle. Hepburn was arrested here once before on the charge of stealing some copper from a sec ond hand man. Since the above statement ap peared in the Democrat the young man had a hearing before Recorder Van Winkle, acting justice, and waiving examin ation was bound over in the sum of $200 for his appearance before the grand jury. His father, of Salem, furnished the bonds. The young man was a Student at the O A C up to the time that he went to Albany and got into trouble. ' D. M. Osbura & Company take the Grand Prize at Paris.
