BE NOT ALARMED.
A contemporary of questiona
ble sanity, published net a thous
and miles from Corvallis, is visi
bly affrighted over the possibil
lty ot tnis country being: inun
dated by a flood of Filipino im
migrants "if we should make the
Philipines a part of the United
States." This an echo of the
excited cry of the copperheads
of 1861-64. "Free the negro,
said they, "and we must some
time expect to see in everv town
and hamlet, on every railroad, in
very shop and factory in the
North and West, a negro laborer
competing and disputing with
our present laborer for the very
employment that is the lakter's
livelihood and his family's sus
tenance. '
But climatie and other condi
tions in the North and West
were not congenial to the negro,
and alter nearly 40 vears we
still find him south of Mason
and Dixon's line.
Lincoln emancipated 3,000,
000 slaves and conferred upon
them the rights of citizenship.
They were all in this country,
but neither our oxtizens nor
our institutions have suffered
from that act. McKinley
has emancipated 12,000,000 peo
ple from the Spanish yoke,
and our citizens and our institu
tions will not suffer from that
act. There has been no barrier
in the past to prevent the peo
ple of the Philippine archipel
ago from coming to this country,
and there is no reason why they
should swarm to our shores un
der the policy of the republioan
party in any greater numbers
than they weuld under the pro
tectorate of Bryan.
If these people love their coun
try as we are told they do, and
are willing to make the sacrifices
for it, that we are told they are,
they will not desert it for a land
uncongenial in climate and cus
toms. If the day shall come
when the people of the Philip
pine Islands reach the standard
of our own citizesnhip; and there
fore deserve the privileges of
citizenship, they will be valuable
additions to our population and
we will welcome them to our
shores. But that day is distant.
When it arrives American capi
tal and American enterprise will
have developed the magnificent
resources of the islands and the
probability is that the Anglo-
baxon with his energy and push
push will do the swarming,
and It will be toward the Philip
pines. In that dav th wH
pino will find more v ;s4aee '
him to remain at norm Sfe?a Ji

contact witti a niener civuiza
tion. His standard of living
will have been raised, and he
will demand wages worthy of
his ability to earn.
If by some wonderful hokus
pokus or hidden charm our sov
ereignty over the islands should
suddenly find the people of the
Philippines seized with a desire
"to swarm to our shores, oHt of
the 7,000,006 men, women and
hildren constituting the popu
lation of the entire archipelago
there would not be enough who
would reach America to
form a corporal's guard, let alone
to menace the laborer of the
United States. If the entire
population should desert their
beloved country and should come
to this oountry in a body, and
were skilled enough to supplant
7,000.000 of our own people in
our various fields of labor there
would scarcely be enough
lo
flood the United States.
But these people will not come
to our shores in any number,
whatever our policy toward them.
The majority of them are no
more capable of menacing the
laborers of this country than was
the American Indian, and the
few leaders of the Tagolos who
are possessed of average intelli
gence will be too busy making
money at home, to molest us.
Speaks for Itself.
The exhibit of the Cervallis
Sawmill Company at the State
Fair attracted so much attention
that Col. H. E. Dosch asked for
t in order to place in the Cham
ber ot Commerce in .Portland.
Well might it attract attention.
It was in the form of a board, six
eet square, consisting of many
different kinds of wood glue-
jointed together and dressed
down to a finished surtace. This
served as a sort of background
for some very artistic wood dec
oration, and also showed to ad
vantage the contrast of the
various woods. Over this was
planted, in relief, spokes, felloes,
hounds, table legs, stair banis
ters, head and corner brackets,
insulator pins and brackets, and
numerous fancy ornaments, all
of which are among the various
articles manufactured by this
company. All of the wood used
was native of Benton county and
consisted of fir, cedar, cotton
wood, maple, ash, birdseye ma
ple, various kinds of oak, and
laurel.
The whole was most artistic
in design and the. workmanship
was of the highest order. The
Sawmill Company have deeided
to allow the Chamber of Com
merce the exhibit. The inten
tion of that bodv is to make ;
special point of this exhibit in
regard to the lumbering interests
of Oregon. It excited a lively
interest in and admiration ot
many Easterners at the State
fair.
