THE WHIS GAZETTE,
FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 21, 1900
Eor Prasidem:
William Mckinley
of. Ohio.
For Vice-President:
THEODORE ROOSEVELT
of Mew York.
For Presidential Electors.
TILMON IORD Marion County

W. J. FURNISH Umatilla County
O. F. PAYTON Multnomah County
A MOTLEY COMBINATION.
Hon. Owen Scott, who was
elected to congress from the old
fourteenth Illinois district and
became quite prominent in the
democratic ranks, supported
Palmer and Buckner four years
ago, but is now working tor the
election of McKinley and Roose
velt. In a recent speech he
said:
"The Bryan men are a party
of negation. They have but one
positive opinioM. They were
forced by their leader to declare
for 1 6 to 1. And yet on this
t'.iey discounted their standing
paramount issue. On all other
questions they are simply 'agin
the government' They stand
around and see which side the
republicans take and then they
take the other. They snarl and
find fattlt. They do not start
out with an affirmative policy,
but undertake to pull down those
who go ahead to do something.
The aggregation now wearing
the democratic label is made up
of every ism and taction which
for twenty-five years has had a
grievance. Such a motley com
bination is not democratic. No
one can exactly tell what it is.
Mr. Stevenson came as near
guessing it when he called them
Bryan men' as any one could.
The republicans ar aggressive
and progressive and the party is
a world party.
"In i8q6 the great section of
gold democratic, so called for
want of a better name, looked
forward to 1900 hoping that
four years of calm consideration
might restore the party to its
reason. "No star of hope arose.
The Kansas City convention was
in the grasp of one imperial
hand. Although the majority
were anxious to ameliorate the
extreme position ol 1896 by a
mild dose of approval of the
Chicago platform, the autocrat
of democracy would have noth
ing less than his pound of flesh.
He must have the 16 to 1 heresy
emphasized by reiteration. It
was done.
"There is an effort to shift the
issues. The silver question and
the Chicago platform are to be
obscured by declaring that some
convenient stalking horse is the
paramount issue. Paramount
issues are not made by resolu
tion. William Jennings Bryan
is the paramount issue. When
a party seeks to undermine the
very foundation of business by
espousing a false monetary sys
tem the country can not be de
ceived by the planks of a party
platform. The scarecrow of im
perialism has been set up to ob
scure the real and fundamental
doctrines of Bryanism. ' '
Mr. Bryan's utterances against
trusts in his letter of acceptance
would, carry far more weight
were it not for the fact that the
managers of his campaign are
personally identified with trusts
Mr. Tones, chairman of the
Bryan national committee, is at
the head of the round-bale cot
ton trust, and Mr. Croker of the
ioe trust, while Mr. McLean is
identified with the sugar trust,
and Mr. Valentine is president
f , the express trust, which fought
savagely against bearing its share
pf the burden of the war taxes
and still persists in saddling
them on the people. Ardent
supporters of Mr. Bryan may try
to persuade themselves that the
business methods or these men
fere upright and conducive to the
public good, and that their en
terprises are somehow different
I
from other monopolies, but down
in the inner conscionsness of Mr.
Bryan's followers will linger a j
doubt of the honesty of his oon- j
tentions.
Senator Mark Hanna made an ;
addrces. to several thousand busi-1
ness men and their employes in j
Chicago, Tuesday, in which he
said: "I was the first man in
Ohio to recognize organized la
bor in 1871, and while that or
ganization of bituminous coal
miners existed we never had a
strike. I believe in arbitration
between labor and capital, and
in 1897, when I stood before 7,
500 men and women in Cincin
nati, I told them that if they
would prove to me . that I had
ever wronged any man working
for me, or urged the reduction of
his pay, I would resign from the
United States Senate next day,
and the offer still stands." Mr.
Hanna's speech is able and vig
orous throughout, and shows
him to be possessed of no small
powers as an orator.
The fact that the president
elected in November next will
be called upon to appoint seven
justices of the supreme court to
replace those who will retire
during his term, will cause many
voters to support McKinley,
who might otherwise vote, for
one of the minor tickets in the
field purely from sentiment. No
president has ever been more
impartial in making appoint
ments, or shown more wisdom
in this respect than Wm. Mc
Kinley. In fact, much of the
opposition to McKinley which
has developed among leaders of
his own party, has been due to
the fact that he has absolutely
ignored party lines in selecting
members of commissions, and in
making appointments.
