GOOD FOR MOUNT!
September 13th, the people ef
Fort Wayne, Ind., dedicated to
the memory of General Henry
W. L,awton a monument crown
ed by a cannon cuptured by him
from the Filipinos, and christ
ened the principal park in
honor of Lawton. Some evil
genius, or ignorance of the eter
nal fitness of things, prompted
someone to invite Mr. W. J.
Bryan to deliver the principal
oration of the occasion, and Mr.
Bryan, sublimely unconscious of
the awkwardness of his position,
accepted the invitation. These
exercises were being held and this
monument was erected to show
Indiana's appreciation of General
Lawton's services to his country
in attempting ho suppress the
Filipino insurrection, and here
was Mr. Bryan, who is denounc
ing this war as an unholy and
unjust one, taking the most
prominent part in doing honor
to a soldier who gave up his life
in that war. As well ask Agui
naldo himself to take part in
such a ceremony.
Governor Mount spoke just
before Mr. Bryan. The govern
or took up the question of the
Philippine war, denouncing
Aguinaldo by name and showing
a tendency to strong condemns
tion of the insurgents and all
who may sympathize with them
Ho spoke of the fact that the
p-un had been taken from men
who had turned it upon our flag
and our soldiers. If any man
shall take offense at the words of
Governor Mount, that man has
no right to honor the memory of
Lawton. ' The governor said in
putt
"If this cannon was not cap
tured in a just and humane war
and from those resisting the law
fully constituted authority over
these islands, fighting the sol
diers of th government that had
liberated them from Spanish
thraldom, then where is the hon
or of the capture and the glory
of this gift? Honor the insur
gents as patriots and then you
interpret wrongfully the words,
the will and the act of our dead
hero, and this shaft becomes a
hollow mockery and this trophy
of patriotic valor becomes a mon
ument to the dishonor of our
soldiers' and the shame of our
country.
"I trust I
dav when I
may never see the
shall so far foreet
my devotion and my loyalty to
my mother country as to char
acterize our soldiers as the agents
of oppression, turning the ban
ner of liberty into an ensign of
imperialism, nor do I apprehend
such a consummation."
Lumbering Activity.
During the past season there
has been much activity among
timbermen in securing holdings
in the difiereot belts. In South
western Benton a great deal of
timber land has been secured.
And much interest ha been
shown regarding timber land ad
jacent the Siletz Indian Reserva
tion. West and south of Dallas
is quite a large belt of valuable
timber. In seeking an invest
ment in timber it appears that
monied lumbermen are not very
particular regarding the variety
of timber so long as it is of good
quality and of reasonably easy
access. It will not be long be
fore the question of location will
be ignored in Oregon and avail
able section of timber will be
taken. Nor will it be many
years before every belt of tim
ber in the state will be easy of
access, so rapidly is the country
opening up, and so energetically
are the various railroad com
panies securing new franchises
and right-of-ways, etc. In or
der to give an idea of the im
mense amount of lumber that
the forests of Oregon contain, it
is only necessary to quote the
following from the Brownsville
Times:
H. G. McKinley, accompanied
by three other timbermen, went
into the timber belt a few miles
east of this city this week, and
in township 15 south, range 2
east, he measured ofl one acre
and counted the fir trees thereon.
On this one acre were 81 trees
which will average 100 feet in
longth aud 3 in diameter, mak
ing about 400,000 feet. This is
all fir and hence does not include
a large amount of hemlock.
Mr. McKinley says this timber
has fallen into good hands, and
soon less than five years big
mills will begin the manufacture
of lumber and then Brownsville
will take on new life.
Buys Another Road.
A. B. Hammond, the Mon
tana capitalist who controls the
Corvallis & Eastern Railroad
and the Astoria & Columbia
River Railroad, has recently
shown his faith in the- Pacific
coast states by purchasing an
other important and valuable
piece of railroad property, the
new road running from Eureka,
California, to the coast, the Eel
River & Eureka Railroad, to
gether with valuable timber
lands and other enterprises and
industrial undertakings connect
ed with the road. As a result
of the purchase of this valuable
piece of property, Mr. Ham
mond, it is expected, will soon
remove from his present home
at Portland to San Francisco.
It is believed that his purchase
of the several properties now
controlled by him on the coast
will ultimately lead to a splen
did system of railroads in Ore
gon and California, with a main
line running north and south
parallelling the coast line, and
that the purchase of the several
lines already controlled by Mr
Hammond was the result of a
careful plan with this idea in
view. Statesman.
There is a slight mistake ap
parent in the above statement
that the "new road runs from
Eureka, California, to the coast."
Such is not the case. Eureka is
right on the coast, being situ
ated on the Humbolt bay. It is
the coast terminus of the road.
.from tnis point tne road runs
south and a little east through
the Eel River valley and from the
inland terminus it is from 75 to
100 miles to Ukiah, Mendicino
county, where it will eventually
connect with the line tfaat runs
from the latter place to San
Francisco bay. Ed.
Arthur Johnson.
The death of Arthur Johnson
occurred at nis nome, seven
miles north of Corvallis, early
Saturday morning. His death
was rather unexpected, for he
was in Corvallis a short time ago
as well to all appearances as he
had been for several years. The
cause of his death ii thought to
have been inflammation ot the
bowels.
Artnur jonnson was about 7
A , 1 -r 1
years of age. He came to Ben
ton county many years ago and
has been a highly respected citi
zen during the entire period of
his residence in this county. He
has been oyer the greater part of
the coast, at one time having
been engaged in mining during
the great mining boom of Call
fornia. He recived a number of
severe jams while working in the
mines that left him somewhat
crippled during'the remainder of
his life. His wife died a few
years ago and he has two daugh
ter who survive him, and they
are the wives of the Harris
brothers. Both gentlemen and
their wives reside on the Johnson
farm.
The funeral oocurred Sunday
at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, un
der the auspices of the Masonio
Lodge of this city. The services
took place at the family residence
and were conducted by Rev.
MacEean, of the Episcopal
church. The remains were in
terred in the Locke cemetery.
And thus another Oregon pio
neer has passed to the great un
known, but he has so lived that
his memory will be cherished by
former friends and companions
for years to come.
