In its last issue the Times
quotes from Carl Schurz's open
letter to Secretary Gage and
says: "It absolutely eliminates
Gage and Gageism from the con
troversy." Now, let the Times
publish Mr. Gage's reply to the
German statesman and let its
readers hold an inquest over
Schurz.
Mr. Bryan says the present
campaign "is a contest between
democracy on the one hand and
plutocracy on the other." With
such plutocrats as Jones, Croker,
Clark, of Montana, and a hun
dred of others of like ilk sup
porting Mr. Bryan, it looks like
that gentleman's party was at
war with itself.
President McKinley's letter of
acceptance, which has just been
-given to the public, is a most ad
mirable work of state craft.
Here are the statements taken
from the records by one in
authority, in opposition to the
insinuations, surmises and accu
sations ot a man who is totally
irresponsible for his utterances.
Mr. Brvan has contented him
self with abuse of the republi--Bh-pVrty
and its administration,
while Mr. McKinlev has laid
bare its record and called upon
the people to pass jugginent.
Editor A. D. Hale has
stepped out of the sanctum of
the Albany People's Press into
the pulpit of the Umversalist
church of that city. In his val
edictory he says: "When I took
charge of this paper it had very
little credit, either financial or
moral, at home or abroad. Fin
ancially the Press is on a sound
basis and has paid its own way,
enabling us to live comfortably
and discount every bill and pay
our help promptly every Satur
day night since' I have owned
it." The populistic supporters
of Mr. Hale' paper have evi
dently been making money un
der this McKinley administra
tion. What Mr. Bryan considers one
of his strongest indictments
against the republican party, is
the charge that ' the war taxes
were purposely arranged in the
interest of the corporatiefhs. The
Pullman Company stamps its
taxable paper without adding to
the price of its service to the
publio or abating the wages of
its employes. The railroad com
panies stamp their bills of lading
without trying to pass the tax
to their customers. The only
corporation in the United States
that in the beginning exacted
the war stamp from the people
was Wells, Fargo, and its presi
dent, John J. Valentine is out
tooth and toe nail for Brvan.
The defeat of Wiliiam McKin
ley next November would mean
not only a panic in the business
world, due to a threatened radi
cal change in the policies of the
government, but it would mean
a loss k the country of the ser
vices of that wise executive him
self and his splendid cabinet
headed by Secretary Hay, whose
achievements in diplomacy dur
ing the Chinese embroilment
have marked him the greatest
living diplomat. The experi
ence of these men and the confi
dence the people have learned to
repose in them, would mean a
severe blow to the country, were
it to lose their services during
the next four years by the de
feat of McKinley,
Times must be good up in
Eastern Oregon. The Pendle
ton East Oregonian of September;
5th tells of an excursion tain
passing through . there from
Baker City to the Portland!
carnival that had 17 pas- j
senger coaches when it?
pulled out of l'eiidieloii. Bakefl
City lurntslieu ovt-r 300 passen
gers a6 $7.50 a ticket for the
round trip, and Pendleton 125 at
$5 Eugene Guard. Yes; and
times are good in the Willam
ette valley; and, in fact, all over
Oregon, notwithstanding Mr.
Bryan's prediction that the
establishment of the "old stand
ard would bankrupt the country.
The Elk's excursion took nine
coaches of people out of Albany
and eight coaches were added at
Salem. There is plenty of
money in the oonntry and the
workingmau has it -to spend.
Just now the farmers of the
Willamette Valley are being
urged and advised by the press,
of all shades of political belief,
in this section to engage exten
sively in raising sheep and cat
tle; and we believe the advice is
wise. No farmer who intends
engaging in sheep raising and is
aware of Mr. Bryan's views on
tariff on wool will cast a vote
for that gentleman. If it is true,
as all concede, that wheat-raising
has been ov'er done in this sec
tion, and our farmers contem
plate investiug in sheep, they
are not going to vote to kill that
enterprise before it is established,
by supporting a man who is un
alterably opposed to a tariff on
wool. During the last four
years the sheep industry has so
grown in Oregon that the reven
ue from sheep and wool exceeds
the revenue from wheat in this
state, and the most ardent free
trader will admit that the pro
tection afforded this enterprise
by the McKinley tariff, revived
it from the crushing blow it re
ceived under the Wilson bill.
Billy and Nannie Goat.
George A. Houck, the well
known farmer and stock-raiser of
Monroe, has written a very in
teresting article to the Pacific
Homestead and the following ex
tract, on the subject of goats,
and the dividends an investment
in them will yield, will be very
instructive to many who are en
gaged in this branch of industry
or who may have expectations of
making any such a move. He
says:
I run my goats in two general
classes those on sha-es and
those kept on my own land. As
to the relative profit of these
classes, it would be a difficult
matter to oampare. as the ones
kept on my own land are clear
ing brush for me in addition to
the annual dividends cut from
their backs and the sale of the
increase. The ones on shares,
however, have never paid less
than 30 per cent, per anHUin on
the investment, and in one case I
made 65 per cent, per annum 011
the actual cash investment for a
term of three years on a bunch
of 60 head. I usually let them
for terms of three years, getting
half of the mohair each year,
getting the old stock and half
the increase at end of term. I
sometimes let them for a year at
a time, however, and as I have
just divided on one band I cau
give my exact income for the
last year or rather, teu months.
These were average nannies:
Income for mohair, 186 pounds
at 30 cents, $ 55 80
Income from increase after the
old stock was made good. 47
head at $3, 141 00
Total income $196 80
My tdiare being $ 98 40
In other words, the 50 goats
are worth as much as $1,640 at 6
per cent. These figures for the
kids are what they could have
been sold for when divided. I did
not sell I bought.
State Fair.
The Corvallis & Eastern Railroad has
made a rate of one fare for the round
trip from all points to Albany account
State Fair, Salem. Tickets good going
Sept 17th to 22nd inclusiye, and return
ing not later than September 24th.
Greater efforts are being put forth this
year to make the State Fair a success
than ever before in its history. The dis
play in all lines, and particularly live
stock, will be the finest ever known in
the state. The dairy interests which are
now creating considerable attention
throughout the valley will receive care
ful consideration, and there will be a
good display of all kinds of creamery
machinery.
The Fair this year should he visited by
everyone who has the development of
the country at heart.

Closes Thursday.
Next Thursday evening at 6
o'clock the car which is to carry
Benton county's exhibit to the state
fair will he closed and no more con
tributions can be accepted. Fri
day morning, together with the ex
hibit from the college, the county's
offering will go to Salein to be ar
ranged for display. The build. ng
formerly occupied by Hout's meat
market, is being used as a store
house for the contributions.
Every farmer in this county
should take an active personal in
terest in the exhibit and assist the
committee to make the best show
ing of any county entering the con
test at 1'n a fair. Manufacturers
and others will find this an excel
lent opportunity to advertise their
products and it should not be per
mitted to pass. Chairman French
has been most enthusiastic and
faithful in his endeavors to make a
creditable showing and Benton
tn county has the resources to
carry off the palm. If she fails the
blame will not rest upon nature or
