THE MlilS GAZETTE,
TUESDAY AUGUST 21, 1900.
ANTI-IMPERIALISM A MASK.
In an interview at Worcester,
Senator Hoar gave expression to
the following opinion of Mr.
Bryan's Indianapolis speech :
"I myself, in my humble way,
did everything in my power to
prevent the ratification of the
treaty. I do not understand that
any opponent of imperialism
charges me with failing to do
my full duty as a senator, both
by vote and speech. I did it at
the cost of what was a dear to
me as. my life the approval and
sympathy of men who have been
my friends and political compan
ions for more than 30 years.
Everything I tried to do was
brought to naught by the action
taken by Mr. Bryan, an action
taken against the remonstrance
of the wisest leaders in his own
party.
"He is not to get the reward
of his conduct if I can help it.
I do not give him any confidence
in the matter. He says that if
elected he will call an extra ses
sion at once and propose to con
gress to give up the Philippines
to their own people. He must
know very well that this talk is
the idlest and most ridiculous
nonsense. He knows he could
not expect either house of con
gress to do this thing until the
people of the Philippine Islands
have abandoned their opposition
and have re-sstablished an or
derly government under our pro
tection. "He knows that if there should
be a democratic majority in the
house of representatives equal to
his wildest hopes, and if the re
publican majority in the senate
should be reduced or wiped out
altogether, so that there will be
a tie which is, I suppose, be'
yond his most sanguine expecta
tions there are still earnest and
pledged imperialists enough in
the democratic party to pre
vent any such action.
"No, the anti-imperialism of
Mr. Bryan and that of his party
is but a mask it is a mask to
cover the things they have had
most at heart from the begin
ning, it is a mask to cover their
purpose to establish the free
coinage of silver, a mask to cover
their purpose to overthrow the
banking system, a mask to cover
an attack upon the supreme
court, and a purpose to reorgan
ize it if they get the opportu
nity."
Beaton County Timber.
In nearly every section of the
East timber is becoming scarce
and as the years pass by lumber
memen are driven West in
search of a new field of opera
tions. Many come to Oregon
and of these Benton gets her
shire.
In the country west of Monroe
there is quite a tract of fine tim
ber. Of late Eastern men have
taken possession of large por
tions of this timber land. About
six or eight miles southeast of
Monroe there is to be a large
mill erected and is said to be in
course of construction now. Its
capacity is to be between 20,000
and 30,000 feet daily. The eo
tire output this season is to be
ties for the Southern Pacific and
the ties are for use of this com
pany in various sections of the
Union where its lines extend
This new mill is said to be pro
moted by Portland capital.
J. W. Walters, who has oper
ated a mill not far from Mon
roe for some time, has purchased
a mill at Elmira, in Lane county,
and has contracted with loggers
for 3,000,000 feet of logs in the
L,ake Creek mountains.
Ail Old-Timer Shot.
From the Pendleton Tribune
the following account of the
shooting: ot David Jenkins is
taken:
"David Jenkins, a farmer,
was shot and perhaps fatally m
jured on his place three miles from
Moro, at 10:30 baturday morn
ing, August nth, by George T
Higinbotham, a liveryman. They
had a controversy regarding some
-wheat, and Higinbobham drew a
revolver and fired, the shot en
tering Jenkins' chest and rang
ing upward through the the lung.
Jenkins was attended by Dr.
Hartly, of Moro, and Dr. Beers,
of Wasco county. It is believed
that he cannot survive. Higin
botham was taken into custody
by the sheriff:"
Mr. Jenkins was for a number
of years a resident or .Benton
County aed has many friends in
this vicinity. While not a quar
relsome man, it is said that when
it came to a question of courage
he had no occasion to take his
hat off to any man. It is hoped
that he may recover.
Traveling Rabbitry.
A. E. Fr.iMiplon, of Oakland,
California, arrived in Corvallis
Fiiday. He had with him a nuui
ber of very fine pedigreed Be gian
hares and is exhibiting them in
the interest of the Sunnyside Rab
bitry of Oakland. Mr. Frampton
states that the foothold that this
industry has gained in the "Golden
State" is astonishing. There is a
great demand for hares on all sides
and- everybody seems to be dining
on rabbit. The meat 13 really finer
than chicken, and while it com
mands a high market price at pres
ent in places where the industry is
establised, it will still be found
quite profitable to engage in this
business even when the supply is
far greater. In other words, the
greater the supply the better known
will be the qualities of these ani
mals as a table dish. Mr. Framp
ton is en route to the Sound and ex
pects to establish a branch rabbitry
at Seattle, which can easily be done,
as the teuimvside Kabbitrv has
some 500 thoroughbreds to draw
from. The proprietor of this little
traveling rabbitry stated that he
was greatlv pleased with the ap
pearance of this city and thought
Corvallis really a beautiful place.
