the mucous membrane which lines
the entire body suddenly becomes

CATARRH
or inflammation of this delicate pink

The system is weakened in win

susceptible to irritation or inflamma

grip, colds, coughs, fevers, etc., all
catarrhal conditions which may
easily be checked by one catarrh
cure Pe-ru-na.
That's the only way out of it.
You may dose forever you will
not be well until you try the true
cure and that is Pe-ru-na. You
may think your trouble is some

your system is affected and must be
treated, and Pe-ru-na is the only
remedy which reaches the right

SORROW OF ANIMALS.
EVIDENCE THAT THEY MOURN

Cutr.-i injj aa Poignant as Those of
Human Beings Grief Over tbe Death
of lb ir Whelp Touchiagly Shown
by a Lion and Lioness.
Edgar Quinet In his journal tells how
one day be went with the naturalist,
Geoff roi lie St. Hiliare, to the Jardin
des flames: "In ue of the cages were
a lion and a iiouess together. They
were standing up, quite motionless, and
seemed not even to see us. Presently
the lion, lifting up bis great paw, placed
It slowly ami softly on the forehead of
tbe lioness, and both continued in the
same attitude as long as we remained
before hem. What was intended by
the- gesture? A painter who should
have desired to represent calm grief
and the deepest compassion could not
have invented anything more striking.
'What does it mean? said I to Geoffroi.
Their lion whelp died this morning.'
replied be. Then I understood what I
saw: Pity, good-will, sympathy all
these sentiments might be read in those
fierce countenances."
Tbe following interesting account Is
extracted from James Forbes' "Orien
tal Memories:' "One of a shooting par
ty, under a banyan tree, killed a female
monkey, and carried it to his tent,
which was soon surrounded by forty or
fifty of the tribe, who made a great
noise, and seemed disposed to attack
their aggressor. They retreated when
be presented his fowling-piece, tbe
dreadful effect of which they had wit
nessed, and appeared perfectly to un
derstand. The head of the troop, how
ever, stood his ground, chattering furi
ously; the sportsman who, perhaps, felt
some little degree of compunction for
having killed one of the family, did not
like to fire at the creatures, and noth
ing short of firing would suffice to drive
him off. At length he came to the door
of the tent, and finding threats of no
avail, began a lamentable moaning, and
by the most expressive gestures seemed
to beg for tbe dead body. It was given
htm; he took it sorrowfully la his arms
and bore it away to his expecting com
panions. They who were witnesses of
this scene resolved never again to fire
at one of tbe monkey race."
But perhaps tbe most impressive and
extraordinary case that has yet come
before us is that of poor Norman's dog
in the Isle of Skye. Here it is, as told
a year or two ago In the Inverness
Courier, one of tbe most reliable papers
In Scotland:
"A circumstance has Just occurred at
Portree, Isle of Skye, which may be
added to the many chapters recording
the fidelity and attachment of dogs to
their masters. A rumor spread through
the town one morning that on the pre
vious night the dogs had torn open the
grave of a young man who had died of
fever, and was interred some weeks
previously. It transpired, however, that
the case was not so revolting. When
the young man was burled his clog fol
lowed the funeral to the church yard
and was with difficulty removed. It re
turned again and again to the spot, and,
unobserved, had dug into the grave un
til It leached the coffin. The dog had
gnawed through the coffin when the
fact was discovered, but tbe body of his
dead master was untouched; and there
the faithful animal was found, eagerly
looking into the grave. T doubt,' says
the correspondent, 'If there be on rec
ord a more striking instance of canine
attachment; for you must bear in mind
that four or five weeks had elapsed
since the Interment, and the church
yard is six miles from the house where
poor Norman's father lives.' "
An Incident Is told of a pair of swans

had reared three broods of cygnets; last
autumn the male bird was killed, and
since that time the female has sep

REWARDS ARE ADEQUATE.
The Public Is Both Just and Generous
to Faithful Servants.
The compensations of political life
are not a matter of wages, profits and
bookkeeping, says ex-Senator Ingalls.
They are not measured by income or
per centum. It must be admitted that
there are vicissitudes and misfits, but
salamities attend all enterprises. Those
who fall outnumber those who succeed.
One is taken and the other left. Pop
ularity and public favor sometimes
seem capricious and fickle. The idol of
yesterday is execrated to-morrow. The
constituency of Aristides still survives,
and Nemesis yet waits to resent and
punish prosperity.
Princes are not uniformly grateful,
and the demands upon the time and
strength of the public servant are not
always considerate. The lamentation
of Wolsey has not lost its pathetic sig
nificance, and the injunction to throw
away ambition yet falls on wounded
and weary souls. But the rewards of
public life are far in excess of its bur
dens. The people are not always slow
to anger, but in tbe end they are both
just and generous to those who serve
them with fidelity.
They honor courage, independent
thought, manhood and truth, and are
quick to forgive errors that proceed
from an intrepid spirit. The ingrati
tude of republics is a stale proverb.

"Why, Bridger! We thought you

"Cap'n," said Bridger, "I want to

"Why, what was the matter?

It is said by those who know Cecil
Rhodes, the South African magnate,
that he has, -in common with Lord
Kitchener, a strong aversion to the op
posite sex. While on a visit to London
before the commencement of tbe war
be dined at the house of a very wealthy
lady of title, and later, when he was
discussing the affair with his secre
tary, the latter asked: "And whom did
you take to dinner?" "Oh, I don't
know. Some Lady Somebody," was the
reply. "But what did you call her?"
"Didn't call her anything never spoke
to her."
When recently asked to write in a
certain lady's album the Prince of
Wales playfully declined, saying: "A
little while ago I spent nearly an hour
one evening writing .verses in several
albums. I even made up a verse so
badly put together that only a royal
prince, or a duke at the best, could have
hail the shame to write such stuff. Now,
madam, what do you thin.; happened to
my verses? WTell, they were all sold at
a good stiff price a week later to pro

A discharged soldier, lately returned
from the Philippines, tells a tale of a
shirt which is too good to be lost His
company was returning from a long
and tiresome scouting trip, in which
most of the men had parted with the
greater part of their wearing apparel,
when he saw on a clothes-line in the
grounds of a residence adjoining a big
stone church two very good shirts,
hung out to dry- As he had at the time
only half a shirt to his back, he pro
ceeded to help himself to a whole one.
Whereupon a woman came out of the
house and said to him, In passable Eng
lish : "You will pay for that on the judg
ment day." "Madam," he replied, "if
you give such long credit, I will take
both shirts," which he proceeded to do.
A charge of watch robbery was pre
ferred before the late Sir James Ing
ham by a gentleman against an indi
vidual who had traveled in the same
carriage with him from Bournemouth,
but in the end it was found that the
watch had not been stolen, but had
been left home by the prosecutor. To
mollify the innocent man, Sir James
said: "It is a most remarkable occur
rence. To show, however, how liable
we all are to make these mistakes, I
was under the impression when I left
my house at Kensington this morning
that I put my watch (which, I may
mention, is an exceedingly valuable
one) In my pocket, but arriving at this
court I found that I must have left it
at home by mistake." While business
was proceeding an old thief at the back
of the court went out, jumped into a
hansom cab, drove off to Sir James
I'ngham's residence, and. by represent
ing himself as a bona fide messenger,
obtained possession pf the watch,
which has never been heard of since.
Chinese Proverbs.
An indication of the Chinese charac
ter can be inferred from the nature of
their proverbs. A few of them are' as
follows: "If the blind lead the blind
they will both go to the pit;" "An old
man marrying a young wife is like a
withered willow sprouting;" "A wife
should excel in four things, virtue,
speech, deportment and needlework;"
"Every day cannot be a Feast of Lan
terns;" "Would you look at the charac
ter of a Prince, look at his Minister, or
the disposition of a man, observe his
companion, or that of a father, mark
his son;" "The higher a rat creeps up a
cow's horn the narrower he finds it;"
"Let us get drunk to-day while we have
wine; the sorrows of to-morrow may be
borne by to morrow."
A Barcelona Boll Fight.

Showing of Ignorance.
By the printed reports of recent

in tbe census office at Washington an
astonishing amount of ignorance is
shown to exist among the applicants
They are especially and funnily ignor

they appear anywhere else than in a
department report.
There was Jefferson Davis, for in
stance, who was placed on record by
one applicant as "a famous general of
the war of 1812." Another stated
that Mr. Daivs "was president of the
United States and wrote the declara
tion of independence." The first post
master general was another who wor
ried the applicants considerably. One
man suggested George Washington
another Patrick Henry, and a third
Wendell Phillips. A young southerner
disposed of all argument by stating
that it was "a gentleman named Bis-
sell."
William Cullen Bryant, whose boast
was, "I am a bookman," had his iden
tity mixed with that of the Nebraska
orator by a young woman, who stated
William Cullen Brvant was the Dem
ocratio candidate for president, a silver
advocate and a resident of Nebraska.
And even Abraham Lincoln appeared
to be examined in varied lights.
Here are some of the answers to the
inquiry concerning him:
"Lincoln was a great general and
distinguished himself in the war of
1812."
"Abraham Lincoln was a personal
friend of the colored race and was one
of the signers of the declaration of in
dependence."
"Abraham Lincoln was born in llli
nois, where he worked from rosy dawn
till dewey eve as a farmer's lad until
he became president."
