THE COBVALUS GAZETTE. FRIDAY. JULY 13, 1900. BRYAN A POPULIST. A brief consideration oi Mr. Bryan's traits and surroundings will satisfy those who still claim to belong to the traditional dem ocratic party that its present leader is sapping away its old principles and characteristics and that to follow him can load 110 wheie except to populism, says the Globe-Democrat. There is no state in .the Union where the old democratic party is more nearly extinct than in Nebraska. In 1892 the total vote of the state was 200,192, of which Cleveland received only 24,943, or about 12 per cent. The re publicans carried the state by a small plurality, but the vote for Populist Weaver was 83,134. Bryan's own vote went to Wea ver, whose platform favored the printing of greenbacks to be loaned to citizens at 2 per cent, and the government ownership of railroads. Bryan says he voted for Weaver because leading democrats recommended it as good strategy. But there was evidently a difference of opinion ou this point, for over 24,000 Nebraska democrats stuck to their own party in spite of the facile advisers who held that suc cess was more important than naeiuy 10 principles. All that remained of a dis tinct democratic party in 1896 was the Palmer vote of 2,885, and in the following year the separate democratic vote dwin dled to 718. In the returns of 1898 it was entirely absent, nothing remaining except the republicans, the fusionists, with the populist dominant, and the prohibitionists. In Nebraska the democratic party is hopelessly scattered, ab sorbed and practically elimina ted. Mr. Bryan feels most at home when addressing the popu lists of the Northwest. Among them he is in his true element. No record exists of his opposing their wishes, and the reason is that he writes their platform and directs personally their political action. There are many demo crats at Kansas City who have reached the same state of recep tiveness. They are for or against a proposed plank accord ing to Bryan's preference. Every time this country has added territory to her domain the spectre of the Roman re public has been conjured up to frighten her out of her new pos sessions. When 1 nomas -Benton advocated the acquisition of Ore gon he was treated to more an cient history than the average vin tioorat in a lifptunp hilt UlftU l.V..." - - - - I .. Thomas had his own way of looking at the matter. Had the Roman seat of government been bound to its distant possessions by lines of railroad, or by fast steamers; by telegraph and tele phone lines which brought it in instant touch with any portion of its domain it might have sur vived. A close student of Roman history, however, will find that there were material differences betwten the Roman form ot government and the form of government of the Uni ted States, even barring the question of colonies. Conditions, too. were somewhat different. It is doubtful if that portion of the United States lying west of the Rockies could be indefinitely governed from Washington if it had no better means of commu nication and transportation than were possessed by the Romans. We are assured by a disciple of Mr. Bryan that no matter who is elected "the gold stand ard law is in effect and will remain in effect throughout the coming administration." Thanks for the assurance, but somehow, we would much rather have Mr. McKinley administer it. The idea of compelling Mr. Bryan to execute a law which he professes to believe would destroy this re public seems almost savage in its cruelty. Yes, Mr. McKinley would be better, much better. It is amusing to see our demo popic brethren quarreling over the reason of the present prosperous condition of the country. It suffices the aver age voter to know that the country is prosperous, and he will vote to continue the party in power that made it so. "If elected. Bryan can do no harm," loudly protests a demo popic contemporary: Can ha do any good? This is a progressive nation, and it wants men who can accomplish something. What Bryan can do and not what he can t do, is what we are to hear. waiting Council Doings. At its July meeting tlie coun cil transacted the fo'i lowing bus iness: W. E. Yates was re-elected city attorney. The matter of framing an or dinance to regulate connections with the sewer, was given con sideration, but no action was taken. Warrants, amounting to $4, 000 on the general fund, and $300 on the sireet fund, were or dered drawn. Liquor licenses were issued to Kirk & Wiley, and Smith & Kreins for six months. Petition of I. B. Hunt asking that an alley be opened in the Shaw-Spangler block was re ferred to the street committee. Lobster Items. The wet weather has somewhat damaged the hay crop. Nearly all the hay in this section is clover. Lobster is the best clover region in the state. Miss May Oglesby has closed a three-months' term of school in the upper Lobster district. She taught here several terms some years ago. She is an excellent teacher. Mrs. Cox, wid)w of the late Joe Cox, who was killed in an acci dent at Walters' mill about a year ago, has moved to Lobster.
