THE CORVALLIS GAZETTE. TUESDAY. JUNE 26, 1900. MORE ABOUT BENTON. So at Money in Wheat-Raising Yet, tiy Good Management- The Pacific Homestead, pub lished at Salem, has a "hustler" in Benton county who has un earthed many things of interest to all. By observation, the do ings of others can often be turned to advantage by men of any walk in life. The Homestead has the following: The Homestead hustler started out toward Benton county again last week. On his road to Cor- vallis, the first stop was made at Granger postoffice, about five miles from' that city. He found A. F. Luther near there who wants the Homestead to wheat growers a lift. He the stockmen are all rig;ht give says but there is some money yet in wheat, for the industrious farmer who will stick to business, and not do his farming by answering the doorbell for social calls in some town. The wheat grower mav not cet rich in a day, but he can make money by hardl work. Ten years ago Mr. Luth er was working for wages; now he owns his farm of 24.0 acres and has paid for it by raising wheat. He has hauled wood and done other work while his wheat was growing, and he has not been idle at any time. The Homestead hustler found him on the toD of a load of wood JL. which he was hauling to town. The hustler met Wm. Gird an old pioneer, eight miles north of Monroe. Mr. Gird is a breed er of fine horses. He has two fine Hambletonian Mambrino stallions, one of them, Sir Wal ter, with a record of 2 135. The other, Lom Corwin, Has never been trained. Sir Walter was sired by Antelope, out of Old rut. Mr. Lrird is a social gen tleman. He was shearing: his sheep when the hustler called, having a man from Sodaville shearing for him. He has a big and fine wheat farm. Mack Porter, whose home place is about half way between Coryallis and Monroe, and who is one of the leading; citizens of old Benton, and one of her lead ing stockmen, was the next man found by the hustler. Mr. Port er has the celebrated Aberdeen Angus bull, Black Knight of Estill, the premium calf of the World's Fair at Chicago. The bull weighs 2200 pounds. He is black and a perfect beauty. The great animal came up to the hustler like a pet calf, and he felt like he was fondling an ele phant when he stood by the side of the fine fellow. The service fee of Black Knight of Estill is $20. Mr. Porter has thirty head of thoroughbred Aberdeen Angus cattle. He has a yearling bull, a son of Black Knight of Estill, three-fourths Angus, that weighs a .thousand pounds, and Mr. Porter thinks he is going to be larger than his noted sire. Mr. Porter is the father of Cotswold sheep breeding in this part of Oregon. He ships fine stock everywhere, and some Montana men were there while the hust ler was on the farm, wanting to make up a carload of thorough breds to ship to ranchers in the inter mountain state, in order to grade up their slock. Mr. Port er is one of the best stockmen of old Benton, and a fine gentleman besides. He will carry a card in the Homestead for the coming year. The hustler stopped over night at S. S. Hinkle's, near Inavaie. Mr. Hinkle lives on a big stock farm. He has Angus stock; some very pretty cows. He goes in tor stocK only, mostly cattle and sheep. Coming to near Philomath again, the hustler stopped at Al exander Casey's. He is a breed er of fine poultry. He has Black Minorcas, Langshans, White and Black Plymouth Rocks, and Pekin ducks. He has a separate pen for each breed and he is nicely fixed for raising nne poultry. The hustler cut across the country from here to Dusty. On the road he stopped at the place of Jesse Brown near Inavaie postoffice. Mr. Brown has a fine herd of Shorthorns, the nicest herd of a dozen cows the hustler has seen. Mr. Brown is a pio neer citizen. He raised a trot ter that made a record at the last Oregon State Fair, and was sold by Mr. Brown for 900. Mr. Brown has a fine farm. John Kiger, two miles from Dusty, has a fine farm of 1800 acres in one body. He was just starting the construction of a big new barn, and the first timbers were being put into the founda tion of a new farm house. These buildings will cost, when completed, something like $10, 000. Mr. Kiger has two fine Al tamonts. They are in training at the track near Corvallis and will be in the races at the Ore gon State Fair this fall. He has some standard bred bhortnorus, and some English Shire brood mares and about 1000 head of good sheep. This is one of the largest stock farms in the county.
