AROUND OLD BENTON.

A representative of the Pacific
Homestead, a farming journal
published in Salem, paid Benton
county a visit recently. Upon
his return home his paper gave
the following write-up of a num
ber of our enterprising farmers:
The hustler went into the dis
trict north of Corvallis, and
turned to the right. He soon
came to the farm of O. Martin,
six miles northeast of Corvallis.
Mr. Martin has some of the finest
Ilalion prune trees the hustler
has ever seen anywhere. They
are about twentv feet across the
top and are loaded with fruit
Mr. Martin has about 700 trees
in his orchard, some of them
cherries and aDoles. 1 hey are
protected from the wind and
frost and he has never had a fruit
failure. Mr. Martin has about
twenty stands of bees. He says
the bees in that district are starv
ing and have to be fed. He says
some of his neighbors are worse
off in this respect than he is
They don't know what is the
matter. Why is it? Will some
of the Homestead readers inform
them, through this paper?
G. I. Stonebrink lives about
two miles from Mr. Martin. He
is a renter. Me has a fine lot of
thoroughbred Brown Leghorns.
He will raise about 200 full
bloods this year. Off of forty
five laying hens, he got 85 dozen
eggs during April and 76 dozen
during May. Who can beat this?
Mr. Stonebrink has tried other
breeds, but he thinks there is
nothing like the Leghorns for
laying eggs.
C. M. Smith, near King's big
farm in that neighborhood, has
75 head of goats. He got 28c
for his mohair. Ho says he has
lost several from some kind of a
disease that causes their feet to
become sore. He does not think
it is foot rot. What is it? That
is what Mr. Smith wants some
of the Homestead readers to tell
him through the columns of this
paper. Mr. Smith has two
ranches, one of 320 acres, on
which he lives, and one of 275
acres, lurtaer back in the hills.
J. E. Aldnch, racently from
Dakota, also lives near King's
big farm. Mr. Aldrich is in the
dairy business, milking 32 cows
They produce 650 pounds of milk
a day. It goes to the Corvallis
creamery; he hauls it in every
day. Mr. Aldrich says he found

he removed to Oregon. He has
a farm of 320 acres.
S H Moore, recent arrival
from Illinois, lives in this neigh
borhood. He has bought a stock
ranch of over 600 acres, and will
probably invest further in land.
He is going into cattle and other
live stock exclusively. He was
originally a farmer and stock
man; then he was in the grain
and commission business in II
linois for ten years. He brought
with him from Illinois a full
blooded Hereford ball; also 80
full-blooded Chester White hogs
Mr. Moere has some mule-footed
hogs, having got his start from
Sacred Heart, Indian Territory

them for miles around. They are
a great cunositv. Mr. Moore
is a believer in farm journals.
The hustler found G B Rick
ard, near Philomath, shearing
750 Head 01 sheep in one band
He has about 1500 more further
back in the hills. Five shearers
were at work. They were tak
ing off good fleeces, as the sheep
are Cotswolds. Mr. Rickard gets
about 3 cents above the market
price for his wool. He has some
full-blooded Durham cattle. The
hustler saw nine of the prettiest
calves he has ever had the chance
to admire. Mr. Rickard sold
every one of his yearling heifer
calves last year for $40 a head.
M. Porter and brother, sons of

They have some fine sheep from
their father's stock of Cotswolds.
They sheared from one buck last
year 17 Vt pounds, and all their
ewes averaged 13 pounds. The
weight of one ewe at shearing
time was 175 pounds
T. H. Cooper is the biggest
rancher between Philomath and
Corvallis. and he and his brother,
G. W., near him, are both in the
dairy business. T. H. milks 35
head, and his brother 20. They
both take their milk to the Cor
vallis creamery. This creamery
has recently changed hands. Mr.
taupisch how has charge of it,
and it is thoroughly up to date,
and giving good satisfaction to
its patrons.
S. K. Brown, about halfway
between Corvallis and Philomath
and a half mile off the main road
to the south, has nine full
blooded registered Cotswolds.
One thoroughbred lamb dropped
the middle of February has wool
now six inches long, and is a
beauty. Mr. crown's place is
near the Brown's Bridge picnic
grounds.
Mr. Brown has 61 high grade
Cotswolds besides his full bloods.
He is an enthusiastic farm jour
nal man.

is milking twelve cows, and the
product goes to the Corvallis
creamery. One of Mr. Chap
man's daughters has gone into
poultry raising on her own ac
count. She has an incubator
and brooder, and he now has
five or six hundred Barred Ply
mouth Rock chickens. She at
tends to them herself, and the
hustler believes she is going to
make some money. He hopes
so. She deserves it.
From Kings Valley the hustler
went over to Blodgett's valley.
There is very little wheat here.
Everything is going to live stock
and the hustler thinks wisely.
The Homestead man was at
Glassford's ranch. Mr. Glass-
ford was defeated for assessor of
Benton county at the last elec
tion. The hustler was also at
the ranch of the successful can
didate, who was elected by two
votes. He is one of Mr. Glass-
ford's neighbors.
The finest farm in Blodgett
valley is the Widow Alexander's.
Mrs. Alexander has a son in
business in Corvallis, a son on
the farm and a daughter at
school. They intend to turn the
whole 500 acres of the farm to
stock. The son on the farm will
run it, and Mrs. Alexander may
spend a good deal of her time in
Corvallis. They have just fin
ished a fine farm house.
The hustler found the roads in
fair condition. They have gen
erally been worked. All through
that part of the country there is
no complaint of hard times, and
very little talk of low wheat, be
cause little wheat is raised , ex
cepting for feed for stock, The
hustler did not run across a
"broke" man. People who
raise stock, and attend them
properly, are prosperous.
Kings valley is as old settled
as the Willamette valley. Old
Fort Hoskins is at the head of
the valley, three miles from
Kings valley postoffice, and there
is a postoffice at the old fort now
called Hoskins.

gon Agricultural College. Of these,
