A GRATIFYING RESULT.
The result of Monday's elec
tion in this state is a matter over
which republicans may feel just
ly proud. It is a forcible endorse
ment of the acts of the adminis
tration and an expression of the
desires of the people of Oregon
as regards the issues which will
be presented in the coming presi
dential campaign. As four years
age the entire country waited
anxiously for Oregon's verdict
on the question of whether our
money standard should be gold
or silver, so this year all listened
tor Oregon's voice on the vital
questions of the hour. And that
voice has declared in clarion
tones for expansion and a con
tinuation of republican rule.
For congress, Tongue has in
creased his plurality of two years
ago by several hundred, and
Moody's plurality will be 2000
greater than it was in 1898.
The state officers have received
the heaviest republican vote ever
cast.
Although local issues influence
in a measure the selection of
legislators, the coming legisla
ture will be strongly republican.
In Benton county R. J. Nichols,
republican, nas received a ma
jority or 12 yotes. inis is
three less than he received in
1898. The total vote cast this
year was considerably smaller
than that of 1898, therefore, his
majority is proportionately larger
ine allied torces nave secured
the sheriff" and clerk by practi
cally the same majorities of two
years ago; and the assessor
by only a few votes, while the
republicans have lost the re
order and commissioner. No
republicans appeared on the
ticket for coroner or justice of
the peace.
There is a ponderosity of rea
soning on the part of Mr. Bryan
and his disciples which has
tendency to perplex rather than
to elucidate. They tell us that
to retain the rliilippines and
hold at bay the grasping powers
of Europe who look with design
ing eyes upon those islands, we
must needs have a large army
and navy; that a large standing
army and a powerful navv is
militarism, and this in turn wil
kindle the fires of imperialism
which will end in a mighty con
nagration and consume every
principle of a republican form of
government. This, by the way,
is almost fiery enough for
Bryanite quotation. On the
other hand, we are advised to
withdraw our forces from the
islands, establish a republic there,
give the Filipinos full sway and
ay to the powers of Europe,
' 'Touch them if you dare. ' ' How
this mandate could be enforced,
or how a designing power could
be kept at bay with an army and
navy any smaller than will be
necessary if we keep the islands
ourselves, is one of the questions
which have not been explained.
If the United States is to be re
sponsible for the protection of
the Philippines she will demand
a voice in shaping that responsi
bility.
The following squib from the
last issue of the Times is respect
fully submitted for the considers
tion of those republicans who
were asked to support the "allied
ticket" on the assurance that
"there was no politics in a coun
ty office :" ' 'Several causes have
conspired to produce this result"
the defeat of the republican
ticket "A principal cause is
the fact that not a few republi
cans are dissatisfied with the
policy of the administration, and
have simply determined hence
forth to att with the democrats."
Our little contemporary is still
hghting the county campaign
although it is generally conceded
that six o'clock June 4th ended
the battle. Such actions dis
close a naughty disposition,
which should be corrected with
out delav. This suggestion is
given with no desire to be severe,
but in the kindliest spirit
Equal suffrage was the only
amendment to the constitution,
submitted to the people of Ore
gon, which carried in Benton
county. Its majority was 87.
All the others were lost by ma
jorities ranging from 127 to 587.
Since the Chinese boxers have
become so aggressive, announce
ment of a visit to the Orient by
Corbett, Sharkey or Jeffreys,
may be expected immediately.

New Train Service.
The double train service to be estab
lished between Portland and Chicago
April 22nd, in which the O. R. & N
the Union Pacific and the Oregon Short
Line are interested, will shorten the
through time 11 hours. Train No. 2
leaving Portland at 9:15 a. m., begin
ning on the date named, will be known
as the Chicago-Portland special. Its
equipment will be new, making it fully
the equal of any train now in service
from the Pacific Coast to ehe East. It
will consist of a mail-car, a baggage-car,
a library -composite car, a first-class pull
man sleeper, a dining-car, two chair
cars, and a tourist sleeper. There will
be but one change of cars to all eastern
points. The full time will be three days
through to Chicago, or four days and two
hours to New York.
The second train, known as No. 6,
will leave Portland at 6:20 p. m., con
necting at East Portland, with the
Southern Pacific's overland train from
San Francisco, and will carry through
equipment to Chicago via the Union Pa
cific and the Chicago it Northeastern,
and also the equipment for the Washing
ton division of the O. R. & N., in con
nection with the Great Northern for St.
Paul. This train will reach Spokane at
10 a. m. Dining-car will be furnished for
breakfast into Spokane, and for dinner
on a corresponding train leaving Spokane
at 3 :45 p, in. The new schedule as ar
ranged, will supply the most cossalete.

and gives immediate contection with the
Washington division at Pendleton. At
this point there is a large interchange of
traffic, on account of the various mining
districts of Balier county, the Coeur d'

ed by this change, in as much as in
creased service is given from Eastern
Oregon and Idaho.

ing day. The time will be reduced two
hours and 45 minutes. No. 3 westbound
train will leave Chicago at 10 :30 p. m . ,
and Omaha at 4:25, the next day.
The service on the Union Pacific on all
these trains include Buffet-Smoking-Li-
brary cars, and dining cars. No. 6 will
carry a daily ordinary sieeper to Kansas
City, with change en route to ordinary to
Chicago.
