The Filipinos are full of hope
for the success of the democracy
ot tne United btates at the com
ing national election. Should
Filipino hopes be realized?
Never. Before the end of four
years the Filipinos would be
spelling "Hell" with one "L."
When republicans vote to fill
a county office with a democrat or
a populist they assist to put an
opponent in the very best place
he can occupy to organize to de
feat republican work when you
are endeavoring to elect a repub
lican president, governor or oth
er state officer. Be careful and
think of these things when you
vote.
Eacn and every candidate on
the republican county ticket of
this county is well and thorough
ly qualified for the offices for
which they are respectively nom
inated. There is not a single
thing which can be said against
the good qualifications of either
one for the office for which they
are named. If any republican
shall step aside to vote against
his party candidate at this elec
tion he will certainly do so with
out any just cause, and for the
purpose of working against his
political principles, and to give
assistance to calamity, forebod
ings, rag money ideas, depreciat
ed currency, anti-expansion and
against all practical ideas of pro
gression and prosperity.
The only reason why demo
crats have been able to fill some of
the public offices of Benton coun
ty during the last several years, (is
because republicans have been
induced to vote for them. In
presidential elections and on
state officers the county is easily
carried for republicans by from
50 to 100 votes. Whether the
consideration which induces re
publicans to abandon their party
candidates and vote tor the oppo
sition, is for favor or otherwise,
they should consider well the re
sult before voting. When the
county offices are occupied by
democrats they are in a position
to exert a very great influence
and effect in battling against re
publican success in the election
of president and state officers.
During the last presidential cam-
oaip-n some county officers of
this county made strenuous ef
forts to throw obstacles in the
way of republicans in conduct
ing the usual routine campaign
work. We mention this only to
show republicans that they make
serious blunders against the suc
cess of national and state elec
tions when they step out of the
path of rectitude to help oppos
ing: candidates to office.
Information through official
sources has reached the govern
ment health officer at Astoria to
the effect that Bubonic plague in
an epidemic form exists in
Chinatown ot San Francisco.
In consequence of the-determination
of San Francisco health
officers to vaccinate the Chinese
in order to stop the spread of the
disease a riot occured among the
Chinamen. The Chinese are
taking steps through the courts
to enjoin and restrain the health
officers from vaccinating them
and quarantining their places of
business. I1" is claimed that rats
are dangerous in spreading the
disease. In some foreign coun
tries where the disease prevails
the authorities maintain a sys
tematic process of killing all of
the rats possible in order to pre
vent the disease from spreading
