With this issue this paper re
turns to its former name of Cor
vallis Gazette and becomes a
semi-weekly. The reason for the
first change is that the name
Union-Gazette has been cumber
some and unsatisfactory and has
led.to much confusion as to the
place of its publication. The
second change is a natural evo
lution in the march of progress,
and comes of a desire on our part
to give our readers the very best
service possible, consistent with
the income of our business.
Our weekly addition will appear
Friday morniugs as heretofore
while the semi-weekly will be
published Tuesday mornings.
THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER.
The f olitical campaign begin
ning promises much embellish
ment with the usual misrepresen
tations and defamation of char
acter of republican candidates.
"Who may be assailed next no
one knows, but Congressman
Tongue has already been given
the first installment. At the ses
sion of the legislature when the
late Senator Dolph was defeated
for re-election Mr. Tongue's
name and that f Charles Fulton
and others were discussed by the
legislators with considerable fol
lowing as prospective candidates
to succeed Mr. Dolph. After Mr.
Dolph received the caucus nom
ination Mr. Tongue and Mr.
Fulton went home, leaving the
field undisturbed, so far as they
were concerned, in favor of Mr.
Dolph. The advocates of free
coinage of silver at the ratio of
16 to i remained, and with other
silver adherents in their respect
ive localities, opposed Mr.
Dolph's re-election because he
was in favor of the gold standard.
Mr. Tongue also entered the Al
bany republican convention in
opposition to Mr. Herman and
others for the nomination for
congress and while Mr. Herman
was deservedly popular among
the people, yet it was the final
decision of that convention for
' Mr. Tongue to be candidate and
not Mr. Herman. It is conceded
as one of the fundamental prin
ciples of a republican form of
government that every qualified
elector has the right to enter his
convention or the legislature of
his state to compete for his elec
tion or nomination for office, and
yet for these acts incident to
American citizenship Mr. Ton
gue is characterized by his detno
populist opponents as having
plotted, conspired and been
guilty of these "cowardly acts."
What cowardly act? For pur
suing his privileges as a citizen
of the United States. Again the
records of congress show that
Mr. Tongue at all times and at
every opportunity appeared be
fore the proper committee, the
engineers, the secretary of war
and on the floor of the house
advocating, pleading for and
urging that the contract be let
for continuing the improvement
of Yaquina bay; but the con
tinued influence of all of the
transportation lines in the great
North west which did not want
Yaquina bay opened for any
cause, were in combined oppo
sition to Mr. Tongue's manly
and persistent efforts, and such
powerful opposition for the time
being succeeded, and yet the
same political opponents char
acterize Mr. Tongue as sitting in
congress as a "hypnotized dum
my," "a political mountebank"
and various other linguistic-specimens,
which, to say the least,
are not elegant or approved by
the reading publier In short, the
kind of "stuff" related is given!
to the public to obscure the real
cause why the demo-populists
oppose Mr. Tongue's re-election.
The real cause of their opposi
tion is that Mr. Tongue dur
ing his whole life has been
an uncompromising republican,
never faltering in any effort on
his part to oppose the tendencies
and pretensions of the' demo
populist effort. Mr. Tongue has
always been in favor of the estab
lished money standard of the
United States, and opposed to
the free coinage of silver at the
ratio of 16 to i. Mr. Tongue
has never indicated to the oppos
ing parties that he would relent
in any respect in favor of any of
their unrepublican schemes.
When Mr. Tongue is approached
he is outspoken and frank "al
ways having a faith in him" for
the principles he advocates,
which he is always as free to
frankly speak when asked.
"Last but not least," Mr. Ton
gue has several times canvassed
the state on the political issues
of the times showing to a re
markable degree that he has the
ability, force and courage as a
public speaker to refute and show
the glaring fallacies in the plans
and arguments of his political
opponents. These are mainly
the reasons why the triumvirate
political party deem it important
to attempt on their part to "kill
off" Mr. Tongue politically, by
calling him names and reflecting
upon his public acts. The voter
is, however, intelligent and can
penetrate the fog and see the
real reasons beyond which such
uncalled lor attacks are supposed
will befog the voter.
The populist party formerly
advocated that unless the man
agement of the government was
turned over to their tender care,
and both old parties thrown out,
the country would go to "the
bad," but they have so far
changed their minds as to con
cede that it will be better to turn
it over to them and the demo
crats. This is evidence that
they are progressing a little.
Their ideas may continue to im
prove until they may conclude
that it is better in the hands of
the republican party alone.
It was not long ago tha t the
demo-populist parties persistent
ly urged that great calamities
would happen on account of the
bankers, financiers and money
changers of the country. It hap
pens that their faith has so tar
changed that at their fusion con
vention, recently held at Port
land, they nominated as their
candidate for congress in the first
district, Bernard Daly, a promin
ent Oregon banker.
It is claimed that the state
convention of the demo-populist
party of Oregon selected R. S.
Sheridan, a prominent banker, as
chairman of their state central
committee. What a "change has
come over the spirit of -their
dream." Less than four years
ago a binker in their ranks
would have appeared as com
pletely out of place as would our
Savior in the embrace of Satan.
There is yet hope.
A gentleman on the street re
cently expressed his wonder if the
"mud-slinging" which he had
read about had any reference to
those "broken doses adminis
tered by our demo-populist doc
tors, during the last several
weeks, contrary to the good
name and fame of Congressman
Tongue."
Will some critic of the bill en
titled, "An act, temporarily to
provide revenues for the relief of
the island of Porto Rico, and for
other purposes, ' ' kindly suggest
a more just or practical method
for temporarily raising revenue
for the relief of the island of
Porto Rico, than the one pro
vided in this bill?
The democratic party of recent
years professed to be steadfast
followers of Jefferson, Jackson,
Calhoun and others prominent in
history, but now it is 1 'anything
for office." Any combination
with populists or other discord
ant organizations to catch votes
will do.
Wm. J. Bryan in delivering
speeches for the last several
months has not mentioned "the
WOMEN and especially mothers are
most competent to appreciate the
purity, sweetness, and delicacy of
Citicuka Soap, and to discover new uses
for it daily. Its remarkable emollient, cleans
ing, and purifying properties derived from
Cuticura, the great skin cure and purest of
emollients, warrant its use in preserving, puri
fying, and beauflfying the complexion, hands,
and hair, and in the form of washes and solu
tions for ulcerative weaknesses, annoying
Irritations and chaflngs, too free or offensive
perspiration, and for many sanative purposes
which readily suggest themselves.
In many of the above conditions, gentle
anointings with CUTICUBA, will prove of
astonishlnglbenent.
