In his address before the National Grange Convention recently held at Springfield, Ohio, Worthy Mas ter Jones dwelt earnestly upon the necessity of co-operation between the grange and agricultural colleges, and urged farmers to value at their full light, these institutions founded in their interests. "Many farmers," said he, "fail to realize the great loss to them selves and the country by pursuing such a system of farming as year by year exhausts the fertility of their lands. And again, but few farmers realize the possibilities of their lands. I am satisfied that the limit of profitable agriculture will not be reached until thft aver age per acre of alL crops, including stock, will be more than double what it is today. The grange and agticultural colleges must teach and demonstrate these possibilities "My efforts have also been directed to establish the closest and most friendly relations between our order and the agricultural de partments of the various states and and the general government, agri cultural colleges, state and local agricultural societies, farmers' in stitutes and farmers' clubs, believ ing that all these agencies having the same general purposes in view the improvement of agriculture should be closely identified with each other and should co-operate in all measures to improve agri cultural conditions. Such co-oper ation will not only help agricul ture, but it will make each of these associations stronger and belter Especially wi'.l the co-operation with agricultural . colleges be of great advantage both to the grange and to the colleges. It will bring our agricultural colleges in touch with practical farmers, who will be induced to patronize them, to send their sons and daughters to these schools, and these boys and girls returning to the farm will apply the knowledge acquired at the school to the practical operations of the farm and thus diffuse scientific agriculture among the farming population." Commissioner Wilson of the Internal Revenue bureau, has for some time past been seriously con sidering the matter of requiring persons who use internal revenue stamps to perforate them with machines instead of by the present process of cancellation. The con sideration of. the subject was brought about by the use of second hand stamps in New York, and other large cities. Fifty British trusts have been organized within a short time and they are properly classified by this name. A board of trustees holds the property and controls all the establishments combined. - One trust in free trade England runs 100 business houses ia London alone. But yesterday the name of Dewey awed the American people; now, none so poor ,to do him reverence. No man has stood the test of public scrutiny like Wm. McKinley. Every puff of smoke . from s factory chimney furnishes an argu ment against the Chicago platform Grangers Talk Sheep. The meeting of Corvallis Grange last Saturday afternoon Iwas of unusual in terest. The grange is well attended and the discussions are of the progressive or der, the grange only ; taking up such questions as are of vital importance to the industrial classes. "Tbe Sheep'' was ,the subject before the grange, and Dr. Witbycombe, of the Btrricnltoral college, stated that the best investments today are in' sheep: that sheep will bring the greatest returns foi the money invested ; and that sheep will redeem a wora-ont farm quicker than any other agency. He went so far as to state that when a farm is worn out, the owner who has grown poor in cultivat ing it can become rich by sticking it with sheep. . Many instances were cited by other sneakers present in support of Dr, Withycombe's opinion, among whom was Mr, Joseph Yates, a farmer by occu parion who lives in Linn county about three miles east of Uorvaius. lie stated that he purchased in October, 1897, 23 sheep consisting of 11 wethers and 12 cwes ft cross of cotswold and meiino sheep for which he. paid in all $34.50. In. the spring of 1898, lie sheared the little flock, and sold the fleece at 18 ' cents which brought $4083. In November, 1898, he sold 11 whethers for Z cents per pound gross. He raised 16 lambs consisting' of an equal number of ewes and wethers. In 1S99 he sheared the entire flock remain; Ing, and sold the wool at 14 cents, ob taining therefor $34.65. In the following i July, he sold - yearling wethers F. L. Millet Umbrellas For Ladies and Gentlemen. .. Our : umbrella stock represents the best values the market offers. Yours truly, ' - F. L. Miller. r : t for three cents gross, bringing $32,52. In September, 1899, he sheared 16 lambs of the flock bringing a profit of $1.10. During the two years he lost only one of the original flock. He has on hand 27 head for which he is' now offered $4 per head. The sheep from the begin ning have caused but little trouble in handling, and they have cost him noth ing for feed, since they have been so managed as to consume what would otherwise have gone to waste. Deduct ing the original cost of the sheep from the total receipts, arithmetic show tnat the total net profit on Mr; Yates' invest ment ef $34.50, amounted in two years to $251.15, all of which goes to prove that the sheep industry in Oregon yields higher profits than steamships, railroads, or banking stock. The annual election of officers will take place at the next regular meeting, which will be held the last Saturday of this month. ' - Tile Drainage. . : During the winter months when the farmer can do nothing else, outside his usual routine of morning and evening chores, it is an excellent and opportune time for him to consider the matter of tile drainage on his farm. ' ' The comoarativelv level formation of the Willamette valley, coupled with our annual" precipitations ia sufficient evi dence that a large area of agricultural land would be benefited by underdraw ing. A simple method . by which the farmer can determine whether his land requires draining or not is to sink a pit three or four feet deep, and if any water collects, and remains in this pit for forty eight hours after a rainfall, the land will be benefited by draining. No problem ia of greater economic im portance to the farmers of ' this section than the one of underdrainage. '. Among the changes that take "place in the soil, resulting from drainage, is its improved mechanical condition, hence tillage ia rendered less expensive, and the soil materially improved for plant growth . Drainage warms the soil, hence percepti bly lengthens the season of grouth. The present unproductive condition of a very large portion of the white lands in this valley is due to the want of drainage. These landa when artifically drained soon become fertile, and the biological change made possible by draining.quickly improves the color and texture of these oils, thereby increasing their productive and drought resisting powers.
