MUST STOP RAISING WHEAT.
The long continued rain has
about fulfilled the prophecies of the
most pronounced pessimest, and at
thir writing there is no doubt but a
large part of the fall wheat in the
valley will be unmarketable, if not
entirely valueless. The spring
grain will be saved.
Unpleasant lessons are hard to
learn, and, no lesson has been more
severely :and" continually drilled
into the farmers of the .Willamelte
Valley than the one that teaches
them to raise wheat for food and
not for revenue. All of their ex
perience, all of their resources, ma
chinery and farming . knowledge
Beems to run to wheat. If wheat is
is 40 cents a bushel, they sow wheat;
if it wereto fall permanently to 25
cents a bushel they would still sow
wheat, and this in the face of the
serious V reminders they . are Con
stantly getting that wheat is ' ihe
most unreliable revenue producer
they can raise. Every . newspaper
you pick up is fillel with some
kind of advice to farmers,' but this
newspaper is not going to follow
that custom. : Farmers know their
business much better than! we can
tell it to them, but nature is telling
them in thunder tones year after.
year that they must stop raising
wheat for revenue, that is of course
if revenue is an object. There was
one year , in the last sixty that
stock was of no value, but nothing
had any value that year. Except
that one unfortunate yser stock
has always commanded ready sale
at a good price. Every man own
ing 160 acres of land in this valley
ought to haye ten head of beef cat
tle up, to sell every year. Eyery
farmer ought- to have sheep and
wool and hogs arid horses to sell.
The ranges in Eastern Oregon
are not producing - the stock - they,
used to. -They are wearing out or
jfettleing up with Ebme builders,
and if Oregon is to keep up her
stock supply it must be done on
the farms. .-. .
All this is by the way, and only
.suggestive, the fact that remains
unanswerable - and unarguable is
that the farmersof the . Willamette
"Valley mnst drop wheat raising as
a revenue producer.' . They must
quit carrying all their eggs in one
basket. They have been using the
same old basket for forty or fifty
years, and they are as yet none the
richer for it and the basket is worn
out.
Considerable, useless and silly
fu.- s has been made over the fact
that an English officer has been
permitted to examine the coast
defences at the mouth of the Col
umbia j and other points . on the
PacificCoast. It has even charged
as an administra'.ion crime by some
of those who are constantly delving
for some excuse to belabor McKin
ley. The fact iff'that these courte
sies are common among friendly
nations, and the United States has
had for years 'a. representativ.'
abroad . among European fortifica
tions and epecially English navy
yards. . It is from information ob
tained this "way that our own superior-
navy came into existence, and
it is from patterning after Euro
peans fortifications and disappear
ing guns that our own fortications
are built. "Europe vand especially
England had an v up-to-date navy
and fortications before we even
thought of either and ours are imi
, tations and improvements on theirs.
The information xipon which our
war vessels were . built was
obtained through the courtesy of
England and could have been
obtained in no other way. We
have a representative ,of the post
office department now investigating
English post'office methods and he
is receivingjevery courtesy and as
sistance from the English officials,
and it is simply common decency
that we should be alike courteoui,
whenEnglish officials come here.
A movement is on foot among
business men in the city, to set
agoin the free ferry across the
Willamette which was provided for
at the special sessioff df theOfegon
legislature in September of last
year. We are sincerely glad to see
this and hope it may be successful.
The city has many needs just at
present but there is nothing which
we need that will pay as big a re
turn for the investment as this free
ferry. All the southern part of
Linn county back to the foothills
is naturally tributary to Corvallis
and ihe farmers living north for
six miles are nearer to us than to
Albany. Our market for produce
is always better than Albany, and
our stocks of merchandise and
farming implement are as large
and as cheap as in any town in the
state outside of Portland. It is
idle to say that the free ' ferry will
not make a difference. It will
make a difference, and will quad
ruple the travel . and the traffic
across the river. The expense will
not be great and it would be better
to provide for it by subscription
than not to provide for it at all.
By all means let us have the free
ferry, and do it at once for we
want it through this harvest.
France through all its history
has had its regular periods of in
ternal disorder. The cause for this
cannot be found in her form of
government, for they have tried
every known form , and disorders
occur alike under all. Just now
she is passing through an ordeal of
internal discontent, that is the most
causeless and silly of all her pre
vious record. A hitherto unknown
captain of artillery u accused by
the army of selling military eecrels
to Germany. He is convicted on
false evidence and banished. The
falsity of the evidence is discovered
and be gets a new hearing before a
French military tribunal, that
seems determined to convict him,
right or wrong. His attorney is
shot on the way to the court house
at a most important point of the
trial, and all France is agitated . to
the point of revolution. One
avowed anarchist barricades him
self in a house and defies the gov
ernment, and an anarchistic mob
burned and sacked churches in
Paris, fought and routed the police,
resulting in about 400 ..wounded
having been sent to the hospital,
and the end is not yet.
Found a Remedy.
Mr. David Huggins who lives
about two"miles southeast of Dusty
has a small prune orchard which
early in the spring, seemed to " be
badly damaged. - He went into the
orchard and trimmed the trees very
close taking off about half the side
limbs. This seemed te restore
the trees and most of them look
very thrifty and vigorous now.
The leaves show no signs of curling
but are a healthy dark green color
and the trees are making ; a gtfod
growth. '' ; tv " V : J.;'
This is the only orchard I have
seen treated in this way but it
seems a perfect success. Mr. - Hug
gisn has only a very few trees that
show any signs of dying. His . or
chard is on red clay hill land and
has.been well cultivated. ",.V..-;;r..-.'
It is probably too late to try, this
remedy on large orchards but it
should be tried on a few of the in
jured treer, by. every prune man;

some of them are sick yet.

ANENT THE WEATHER.
The rain of this season, disastrous in
its results and a most unusual thing for
tills country at such a season, will tend
in the end to serve as a benefit to ' the
farming class of the state. The Oregon
farmer has such an exceedingly easy and
comfortable time of it, it is so seldom
that climatic misfortunes come in his
way, that he is never prepared for
emergencies and when they do come they
find him totally unprepared to meet
them. This sudden downpour, coming
at the verge of harvest time, when the
farmer was entertaining such high hopes
of the abundance soon to be showered
upon h:ni, will teach the farmer that
there is such a thing as the wheels of the
season slipping a cog now and then and
spilling rain down upon us at any time
of the year. "
While the farmers are to blame in one
sense for the loss they will receive as a
result of the rain it may again be said
that they are not to be censured, for
farmers, aged and bent with service in
the Oregon grain fields can remember
but few times when such weather as the
present has made its appearance during
the month of August. They have simply
done this year what they have done fo
years in the past, and what would be
called carelessness by farmers of the
East, has brought the Oregonian to
grief. . '
Had the wheat been placed in large
shocks and capped, it would have taken
more pains and and trouble yet at the
same time, the wheat would have been,
able to have stood in safety a long seige
of continuous rains.
. Tnis will also teach the Oregon farmer
that there are other things to do i the
world besides raising wheat, and that if
he fails in one - he will succeed in
another. There is ever a way to be found
out of a difficulty and there is no doubt
but what the present one will be over
come in some way. The farmer of the
future is going to be very much more of
a book farmer than our fathers were, or
even the farmer of today. Farming in
the true sense is a science, from the vir
gin . soil ' toharvesting the crops grown
from the soil, the feeding of them to
domestic animals and the marketing of
them in the form of finished products.
LOYAL TO OREGON.
It has been said that miles of reading
matter concerning Oregon, her people
and resources, would be the result of the
recent visit to this state by the National
Press Association, and the statement
was no exaggeration. The . write-ups
give so much detail that careful readers
will form an acquaintance with our peo
ple and customs which can be improved
only by a personal visit, . The Trenton
XMo.) Republican says this ofCoryallis :
Fifty miles further on we came to Cor
vallis, the junction of the Southern ; Pa
cific andC. & E, railways the" county seat
of Benton county. . The state agricultur
al college is located here.; - This is the

glorious truths to tall us concerning the
state of Oregon that he ; . could not tell

not show them, Mr. Lafferty is in" busi

his many friends in old Grundy will be

family have all regained their health and
seem to think there is no place like Ore
