TEPPING
THE TAILOR.
Lnrky
and Plucky Investor In
lottery Tickets.
Previous to the 11th of August last,
Gebhardt Tepping, a cutter employed
in a tailoring establishment on Market
street, was comparatively unknown
outside of the circle of his few acquaint
ances.. Himself and family had been
oppressed by comparative poverty, and
the wildest dream of the obscure tailer
hardly equaled the good fortune that
was in store for him. About a fort
night before the date mentioned a man
peddling lottery tickets approached
Tailor Tepping and negotiated the sale
of one coupon of five that had com
prised chance No. 77,081 in the draw
ing of The Louisiana Lottery, to occur
August 11th. Tepping thought little
of the value of his purchase at the
time. lie rplaced the coupon in an
envelope and carelessly tossed it into
the office safe.
On Wednesday, the day succeeding
the drawing, the peddler of whom Tep
ping had purchased the coupon rushed
into the store and informed the cutter
that his coupon had drawn $15,000.
The breath was fairly knocked out of
Tepping by the announcement. So
much wealth so suddenly acquired
could scarcely be realized by the pov
erty-stricken croth-cutter. who had
i jneci nara lor a living ior years wiin
little prospect of bettering his condi-
tion
But the old saj'ing that "wealth
brinirs tribulation" proved at least
temporarily true in Tepping's case.
Upon looking for the prize coupon he
was astounded when his employer an
nounced that he had sold the coupon
to his father-in-law. Tepping , was
frantic, and consulted mends, who
advised him to get a "gun" and either
recover the coupon or shoot whoever
held it. Tepping resolved to not allow
his fortune to slip from him before he
had fairlr touched it and acted accord
ingly. A new bulldog pistol in his
hand, the tailor traced the coupon to
an olhce where one itosenoium was
negotiating to have the coupon cashed.
Rosenblum and Tepping's employer
lankered for a share of the tailor's
ucky venture. They worked upon
lis feelings so successfully that Tep
ping agreed to take $12,300 for the
coupon. Tepping stowed nis .?iz,oiaf
away securely and then proceeded to
make it lively for his ex-employer and
Rosenblum.
Vrhen the ticket was cashed, Ten-
ping, with the magnificence and con
descension of a suddenly created mil-
lonaire, made his late employer a
present of $300. Such was the act of
Tepping, the enriched tailor. Then
with his newly acquired fortune, he
proceeded to enjoy himself. The
dreams of a , lifetime could now be
realized, lie would eat, drink and be
merry. The wife should have a new
sealskin to replace the old faded cloak.
The children appeared in bright new
rocks, and Tepping himself shone
with the splendor of a nabob.
ouch is the story of Tepping, the
tailor who was poor and is rich ; who
boueht a lottery ticket coupon and
won a fortune last month. It is said
that Tepping has forsaken the scenes
that he formerly haunted : that the
paths he trod now know him no
more. Where is Tepping? Has he re
turned to the land where Trince Bis
marck rules and where the American
log is unknown? It is hinted that
Tepping has gone to visit his Fatlier-
and and to there astonish the' natives
with graphic accounts of how fortunes
have been made by Californians in
vesting in Louisiana lottery tickets.

COCK-FIGHTING.
An Amusement Which DU;hta the Na
tives of Sumatra.
Sumatra, of all places in the world,
is the greatest for cock-fighting. It's
the national sport. A Sumatra father
thinks more of his game cock than he
does of h's first-born. .They pray to the
gods for success in the:r cock battles.
Cock-fighting is called kyabung, and
the pit galanggan. It is a large inclos
ure, some twenty feet square, railed in
by stakes twelve to fourteen feet high,
far enough. apart to enable those outside
to see all that is going on within.' The
cocks about to fight were handed over
to the care of two offic'als who direct
the affairs of the ring. They attached,
with great care long, double-edged,
steel spurs, sharp as lances. When the
sound of the bedoog announced that
the arena was to be occupied, all other
sports were instantly deserted. The
cocks were brought into the ring by
the proper official, each holding his
bird carefully, with his leg armatures
sheathed. No one but officials, owners
and a favored few are admitted into
the incloure. The two cocks are
held up before each other by the gu
longs, who ruffle for them iheir neck
feathers, tug their combs, pat them on
their breast and sides, and shake them
with a sort of tremulous, instigating
motion, which they perform with a
knack and neatness that indicates a pro
fessional hand. The maneuvers, whose
execution are the envy of the on-look-ers,
are imitated by the children who
light cockerels before they can speak.
When the fowls have been thus excited
they are allowed to have one dig at each
other, just to put them on their mettle,
and with their terrible armatures bared
they were set facing each other a few
feet apart; the i came the charge. I
shall never forget, for I was utterly un
prepared for it from the stolid Malav
