THE COLUMBIA!!.
U. S. OFFICIAL PAPER.
CONCERNING THAT COW.
ItAixiEti, July 20 18SJ5.
Ei.'iTon Columbian 7ar 6ir: I .se
in vouc last issue a letter in ansver to
tlu- one I wrote July .2 J. Fpr.aKiug aliout
a loreacher cutting his cow's t-j.il off. Mr.
Cue, the writer, seems to be lal-a-iiig
ui iU-r the impression that -G. G. Good
felow claims the cow's tail -Yasnot cut
off which isnottrue us I admit the
preacher cut the cow's tail off and plit
the same to cure the hollow horn as Stat
ed by the COLUMBIAN. .
Mr. Coe says her .tail was cut'off Sun
.day June 7th. instead of Saturday June
.Cth. Will Mr. Coe be kind enough to
prove that it was done on Sunday 1 1
repeat my statement it is jx falsehood.
Even .suppose the preacher did cut the
cow's tail off on Sunday was that any of
,Coe' business.? Was it anybody's busi
ness ? Is it not a Christian act in case
of necessity to help or aid a poor dumb
brute or in case of sickness 1 Is it for a
' fotrunger that is fit home wjiereverhi
hat is off to came and unmercifully ar
raign an old uan. simply to cause Com
ment and gossip ? What if he did
preach on Sunday 1 Was Mr. Coe o
bligedto hear him 1 Was anybody o
bli;ed to hear him ? Mr. Coe gets indig
nant at beiuj; calltfd a liar. iJid he not
call the He v. an old hyocrite and a
scoundrel 1 People that live iu glass
houses should not threw stones. These
are points I respectfully ask the citizens
of Beaver Valley to consider.
Mr. Coe says a spider-legged dude is
jx new kind ofja dude to Jtiru. Now if
Mr. Coe will write to the He v. Samuel
Jones, the noted Evangelist of Tenness
ee, he ' will get ''the correct tfinition
of the word. Mr. Jones furthcr says a
man had better be in '.''.Hell with;jac"eaii
mouth than on Earth with a slanderous
tongue.
Coe names 34Ui:uls of tlu-hs. I quote
his version of the cmnl. dude. He say?
'the crankv dude is a 'unddle-aedimin
who think ttatever female ougm to be
stuck on his ihape and when .a dance is
got up m the neighborhoodhe w ill go
fro n house to house until he tin. Is a girl
who would sooner go without than to
see him go away with a tear in ids eye.'
Great Scot ! it seems one Q. Q. Quincy
lias called him "a cranky dicte some time.
Anyhow it suits said Ce. to perfection.
1 Wtrn the cranky spider-leg .goes to
dances and imagines every girl is in love
with him. The last danee he went to
he did not come away with a tear in his
eye, but a genuine black eye, as be ran
against a one-legg-J man of this place
and from his talk would make mince
meat of the cripple" jn 'a twinkling, but
this inoflVnsiv; citizen of Beaver Valley
objected to such proceedings and prorupt-
Jy took Mr. spider leg J.ovn and sat up
.on him and but for the timely intcrfer
r-nce of others would probably have had
Lini under some seedling cherry-tree as
a substitute for guano.
Mr. Coe alluding to being called the
Champion liar of Beaver Valley says
"now I have moved ont oflhe valley 1
will turn the medal over to him." Great
Scot ! weo was lucky enough to secure
the job of moving him 1 It must have
taken a pretty good team to move him,
as he had a pie box containing a two-
bit straw hat, two fried shirts, a pair of
tooth-pick shoes and a bottle of hair-oil.
1 wish he would hurry up with the med-

lie requests me to name the witnesses,
they are as follows, II. Johnson, I. Rob
erts, G. Johusoa, all of Beaver Valley.

A LIVE LETTER.
Scappoose,-July 18-33.
Pf.ar M.won Not having wvn any
item's from S-japnoose in your valuable
pvprrfor some time, I venture to' drop
a few.
J laying lias lx'gun in arnojbt, .tlie
sound of the weh-ome mower is heard
once more, and indeed lrings joy to our
hearts and money to our pockets, a long
f .'It on tin; Scappoose.
Our school has also hegun for a new
term with Miss Cait. r of Portland as
leather and she seeiys to he well liked
by all the sehol irs.
Our enterprising merchant, A. T.
Creeey wems to e doing well; if no cash
is on hand he can oblige on tick. Just
the right kind of a iiian foi hard times.
We have heard it rumored that our
trusty mail carrier Js Potter Is about to
be bound in the holy bonds of matri.no
ny, the bride's name withheld for a
short time," and has rented his intended
father in-law's farm, so he would rot
have to move as he ha-s a dread for muv
in-.
Our sun-flower has made his appear
ance once more, not as eovi-slip or a cow
boy hut an honest haymaker.
The SeappcKist; diide has cpuite re
gained his health since his irip to llills
boro and locks fine.
The ltichtahd Mills are soon to start
up with a new set of hands J. It. Watts
the proprietor, is one of our substantial
whole-souled men, and is not afraid to
shake oe liy bv the hand, if he is out ut
the elbows and signs of hard times on
the kruhe. ,
W. W. West is still dcing juite a
cash business in the cord wood lijje, and
the road is kept dusty 'with teams.
Our friend, Jiobert J.'or.va- uu't xvith
a frightful mishap wiiiie playing ball.
The ball missed the bat but not liis nose
and then-fore he beholds a gee west
note. We are so-rry for friend Robert
as he dees not look on the win?, it niu.st
have been the charming widows he was
eyeing.
A little drive around Scappoose gave
us a fair chance to look' ot the tine gar
dens and some grain that equals any we
have seen this season and iruit ii. abun
dance, and gives the good house-wife
time to dry and exu for the Jear ones at
noiuo.
Our .73 ct. dandy has bought the fa
mous dude spade and will try the Xeha
lem mines. We wish you luck
We understand there was quite an
exciting time at Mr. Henry Thomas'
lately, in which a beautiful little girl
put in an appearance and broke her
brother Cleav eland's nosi.
The Cionimrer brothers will cut seve
ral tons of wild hay this season; they are
workers aud deserve all they earn.
The blackberry season is past and
gone; ali have, their shar but one.
We understand our friend, S. C,
Knighton kas gone to Sauvie's Island to
repaint the residence of J ouathan Moore
who is a wealthy widower and no drxjn-'i.
Soon the fair on s of the Island will
sigh and nay, "I'd rathe;- be an old man's
darling than a young man's slave."
Are glad to state Mr.-, Andrew Miles
is recovering fast, but are sorry to say
Mrs. Mows Mc.Nauiee is very sick at her
