    BARTHOLDI'S BIG GIRL.
The Prejudice Met By a Canvasser
for the Pedestal Jb'und.
TheBartholdi pedestal fund is nearly
complete. The statue has arrived and
soon New York harbor will be graced
by the most magnificent colossal statue
the world has ever seen.
" Liberty Enlightening the World ! "
What a priceless blessing personal lib
erty is. It ia the shrine at which peo
ple, ground under the heel of tyranny
in the older worlds, worship with a
fervency that Americans can scarcely
realize; it is a principle for which
Nihilists willingly die the death of
dogs; and fit and proper it is that at
the very entrance of the Vmy of New
York this emblematic statue should
Hash a welcome to the world.
The press is entitled to the credit of
this achievement. Mr. Philip Beers,
who has been making a circuit of the
couutrv on behalf of the Pedestal fund
says that the fund will certainly be
raised, as the H arid does not Know ine
word fail.
Mr. Beers says, he lias found the most
pronounced generosity among those of
foreign birth. They seem more appre
ciative of liberty than do our native
born. Moreover, among some a strange
prejudice seems to exist.
"Prejudice? In what particular? "
"I have ever found that however
meritorious a thing may be, thousands
of neoole will inevitably be prejudiced
against it. I have spent most of my life
on the road and I know the American
people, 'like a book.' In 1S79 a per
sonal misfortune illustrated this pre
vailine prejudice. I was very ill, had
suliered several years with headache,
fickle appetite, dreadful backache,
cramps, hot head, cold hands and feet
and a general break down ot the system.
I dragged myself back to New York,
seeking the best protessionai treatment.
It so happens that among my relatives
is a distinguished physician who up
braided me roundly for preaching so
much about mv own case. Finally, with
some spirit, 1 remarked to him :
" 'Sir, you know that much of your
professional wisdom is pretense. 1 ou
are controlled by prejudice. You can
not reach a case like mine and you
know it, can vou?'"
"I had him; and he finally conceded
the point, for it was bright's disease of
the kidneys which had prostrated me,
and the schoolmen admit they cannot
cure it. Having cured mvself, how
ever in 1S71). and not having seen a
sick da v since, mv relative finally ad
mitted that Warner's safe cure, which
accomplished this result, was really a
wonderful preparation. Had Presi
dent Butter, of the Central-Hudson
used it, I am certain he would be alive
to-day, for he could not have been in a
worse condition than I was.''
" I have found similar prejudices
among all classes concerning even so
laudable a scheme as this pedestal
fund."
Mr. Beers' experience and the recent
death of President Butter, of the Central-Hudson
railroad, of an extreme
kidney disorder, proves that the phy
sicians have no real power over such
diseases, and indicates the only course
one should pursue if, as the late Dr.
Willard I'arker says, headache, sick
ness of the stomach, dropsical swell
ings, back ache, dark- and offensive
fluids, prematurely impaired eyesight,
loss of strength and energy occur, for
they unmistakably indicate a fatal re
sult, if not promptly arrested.
"Yes, sir-ee, every cent needed for
the pedestal will be raised. Of course
it will be a great triumph for the
World, but would it not have been an
eternal disgrace had our people failed
to provide for this pedestal?"

EPITHELIOMA.
An Affection Which Concern the Mem
br ine Cluing Most of the Internal Or
g.in. This word now so sadly familiar
from the case of our great fellow-e'ticn,
General Grant is one of the nanici of
carcinoma, or cancer. It is used be
cause most cases of cancer arc co i
neete I with the epithelum the mem
brane which lines most of the internal
organs and cavities of the body or
with the epidermis (scarf-skin), which
covers the outer surface and is ewi
tlaliy of the same nature.
All our tissues muscles, membranes,
r.irves, fat, bones, etc. are built um
bv and consist mainly of cells. These
cells select from the" blood, transform
and assimilate the element? essential to
their activity, growth and perpetuation.
Tiiev multiply by division. Tumors
result from a morbid multiplication of
c,l!s.
Benign tumors simply crowd as they
gr av by the multiplication of cells
a j:i i ns. tlu; adjacent parts. In maiig
n:i!.t tumors the multiplying cells iu
iiiir.it'? into the adjacent parts, and thus
co nstantly enlarge their deadly area:
or they are taken up by the blood-vessels
and lymphatic vessels, particularly
the latter, and borne to distant glands,
where they set up the same deadly
action.
A cancer of whatever kind is always
malignant, though a hard cancer, of
of which an epithelioma is one, is not
so malignant as a soft cancer, in which
the cells preponderate over the fibrous
tissue. What is nmv called a sarcoma,
which wa-? once thought to be a cancer,
is a benign tumor generally, but may
be malignant. It differs from a cancer
m i'nly in having its cells separated
from each other by intervening sub
stance. In the latter the cells lie
against each other several hundred of
them perhaps in (otherwise) empty
spaces, or nests. The microscope alone
distinguishes between the two the
cancer and the sarcoma.
A cancer may long remain simply a
hard, painless tumor, with its true
character unknown. If it can be cut
out then, it may never recur. This,
therefore, is the time for its extirpation.
A cancer due solelv to local irritation
is rpi'te likely to b3 cured when
operated on early. When due to hered
itary t iirf, it is more likely to recur
under some new irritation.
The age at which cancers appear is
generally after forty. Hence the ocur
renc ot" a hard tumor, sav from forty
live and onward, should awaken a!te:i
tion. But comparatively few tumors
are cancerous.

A Man Who Has ll i.I 1 l-Yjierience In Small

"Small farms are the best."' said Mr
b. K. Emory, of Longmont, to th
'.'; a dav or two s in e. "I know
it to i.e a fact, because Fve had ex
peiience with both large and small. I;

"Now the man who owns but fortv
acres determines to get as much out of
th:s land as possible, and to this end
fertilizes it, sees that it is irrigated
iroperiv, aim gets in most cases as
muc h as his neighbor who farmseifhtv.
I he natural reasoning then is that
small farms, as a rule, yield the largest
proms. Anoiiier reason why tliev pa
is, that whoever owns a small farm
generally has poultry, swine, etc
As the farm docs not take all his
time, he sees the hens, the chickens
and the turkevs have proper care. He
has a few cows -and a small dairy,
winch, as he is not obliged to be
working the land all the time, re
ceives the attention needed. The butter
ami chees-' from this dairy are always
well m ule, and invariably bring the
highest prices and meet with a read
sal . Tne eggs and poultry also sell
well, the former being fresh, and the
latter fat and plump, as only wvll-car.-d-for
poultry can be.
"On the forty acres can be grown a
liberal supply of vegetables, ami there
is ample t me to give them, too, the
necessary attention. A little of every
thing :s found on this farm, a perfect
exempt licatioa of mixed farming. I
have often heard people say of poul
try on a farm, as an instance of how
small things are regarded, -Pshaw !
Chickens are a nuisance.' Yet i know
a family in Colorado which this same
nuisance furnished largely with their
subsistence for one while." Colorado

know if any difference in the average

exists because of the constant presence
of obstructing walls before the eyes of

"WHAT SHALL WE DO WITH OUE
DAUGHTERS ?"
This question is asked by a well-known
lady lecturer. Well, we can do a creat
many things with them; one thing, we
must take good care of their health, and
not let them run down ad become en

may be summed up in one word debility
we have a sovereign remedy in Brown's
Iron Bitters, which has done much good.

ONLY FRACTIONS OF LIVES.
How many persons live only a fraction of
averaue human life becauae they neglect to
take the commonest precaution against sick

and maturity implies growth. A. slight indis
position is usually slighted. They who avail
themselves of Ilostetter's Stomach Bitters
know it to be elticacious in chronic cases of
disease, but the process of cure is a far easier
one if it is used in early stages of dyspepsia,
malarial disease, rheumatism, constipation
and liver derangement. Let those who would
avoid the peril which even tho most potent
remedies cannot avert, steer clear or the rock
upon which so many com titut Ions : 6plit an

A QUESTION ABOUT
Browns Iron
Bitters
ANSWERED.
The question has probably been asked thousands
of times. "How can Brown' Iron Bitter cure every
thing?" Well, it doesn't. But it does care any disease
fr which a reputable physician would prescribe IKO.1
Physicians reoognize Iron as the best restorative
aent known to the profession, and inquiry of any
loading chemical linn will siibetitnl into the assertion
that there are more preparations of iron than of any
other substance need in medicine This shows con

important factor in successful medical practice. It is,
however, a remarkable fact, thatprior to the discov
