Cos. new j iron ferryboat, to be used for the trans- I ferring trains across the Columbia river at Kalama. Tlie huge boat was shipped in sections fron New York in Jun on the Tillie Starbuck, ami is expected to arrive here in alout two months. The work is under the direction of S. S. IIa let, master carpenter, who has been for thirty years connected with the ship yanls at "Wilmington, Delaware, arid his son, J. IF. There are now live men employed, and there will be more thaii work eiiough in lay ing ihe blocking, foundation, etc., to kee. thorn busy until th, vessel arrives. A very large force will be employed in j building the boat and it is estimated that the work will occupy about eight months, making one year altogether. It was with difficulty that a sufficiently large piece of ground was found owing to the vastness of the Wat. Her di mensions are as follows: Length be tween perpendiculars, 320 feet; length over all 33G feet; breadth of hull, 41 feet; breadth over guards, 73 feet G in.; depth of held, 13 feet G inches She will be supplied with a boiler room on each side and two horizontal noncon densing engines 36 inches diameter and 9 feet stroke. She will be furnished with side wheels 27 feet in diameter by tight feet face. Three lines of track will run along the deck, giving a capac ity for twenty-seven cars. When load ed sh will draw about seven feel. The Joiner.. work along the sides will contain btate rooms, jess room, sAloon, etc., for tfe accommodation of the crew. It will "be a work of great magnitude, and will fnrnish employment for all the ship car penters Portland can furnish, the fear of the builders beim that not enough skilled labor can be found. We know that there are no more valuable claims than ! his soldier homestead and railroad land. If they can sell and get away Mr. Frier son caii get work at which he can sup port his fa.-nily. The price they ask is very low. Is there no one with capital who will buy the places of this old wounded soldier and give hiiu an oppor tunity to get up on his feet. We can testify to an honorable service of four yeats, to iive wounds received in battle. We know he is sober and honest, but that he can't work in tho timber where strong men wear out. If no one man can bo found to buy his places, we will make ono of fifteen to buy them out. Friends to Frierson and his wifo are at work to secure him a place. E. G. A.
