ACROSS THE STREET,
When dawn was lighting in the rose heaven,
At four in summer, in winter seven;
Ere rbtebus glowed,
Or jet the city had turned in lU bed,
There by the window, with needlctCnd
She sat and sewed .
thread.
And. as the hand so busily plied,
A babv boy played softly by her side
Tho whole day long;
And sad and sweet in the evening mild
Were heard the voices of mother and child
In gentle song.
'Mid toil and trouble and dire dospair,
The child's smile solaced the mother's care
Thro' dire years;
For the little one had its father's face
That laded away from her fond embrace
With burning tears.
But there care a day when the song was
Anil the needle stopped at the window sill,
still,
i-ortneoaoe was ww;
And there came a day when the boy was dead
And cold and pale in his little bed
Where the violets blow.
No longer the woman sits and sews,
No longer tho tear of sorrow flows,
Or memories throng.
For the gentle to les of mother and child
Are bleuded again in the evening mild
In angel song.
Detroit Post.
Pumping Out a tea.
On(toof tho greatest enterprises ever
undertaken has been deiinitely decided
upon bv the government of Holland.
This is the reclamation of the Znyder
Zee, a gulf or bay on the eoast, about
forty miles in length and of nearly the
same breadth where it is widest, though
its average breadth is considerably less.
Its area is not far from BOO square miles,
or half a million acres, about one-tenth
of the area of the State of Massachu
settes. A dyke of nearly twenty-five
miles acrossthe mouth of the bay will
be required, extending from the city of
Enkhuysen to the coast of the province
of Overysel. Then the great salt lake
thus formed will be pumped dry by
lingo steam pumps. The dyke itself
will be a tremendous work, of great
thickness, to withstand the force of the
waves on that stormy coast. The mate
rial will be sand and clay, and its bight
will be sixteen feet above the sea-level.
The cost of the work is estimated at $10.
000,000. Work will be begun on the dyke at
four different points, and from seven to
ten years will be required to complete it
according to present calculations. When
the lake is pumped out, what is now the
bottom of the sea will be a vast meadow
of remarkable fertility, as similar works
on a small scale have . proved, and the
valne of the land thus reclaimed from
the sea will handsomely pay for the great
investment. Many square miles of the
present territory of Holland have been
rescued from the sea by the stout and
tenacious Dutchmen, but no enterprise
on so vast a scale as this has been at
tempted before. It is now ten years or
more since the project was seriously
entertained, and the engineers,who fully
understand their problem, have now
completed their plans anl estimates, and
tho government haa resolved to enter
upon their task without delay.
Arizona Farmmg.
"No, sir; I wouldn't advise any man
to try farming in Arizona," he contin
ued, as he rubbed his back against the
depot wall. "I've been thar, and I know
all about it."
"What's the trouble?"
"Well, I had the purtiest farm you
ever sot eyes on. Jist as I got my wheat
in along came a parcel o' fellars an' dis
kivered a silver mine right in the middle
o' my wheat field, and I believe they
spilt at least thirty acres."
"But you sold the mine?"
"Oh, yes, they come down purdy
handsome for that, but I never felt quite
right about it. Then there was my med
der. I had a hundred acres of the pur
tiest medder in the Uniied States, when
'long came a galoot an' diskivered
a mineral spring on the back
end, an' nuthin' would do but I
must sell him fifty acres for $500
an acre. I had to do it, but it spiled
that medder completely. Then I had a
hill, all graded off nicely fur the boys to
slide down in the winter, an' they was
anticipatin' heaps o' fun, when a gang
rode up one day an' began to hammer
an dig, an' afore night they coaxed me
into selling thirty acres for $50,000.
Then another crowd diskivered asbestos
in my calf pasture, an' stuck an hung
for ten acres at $2000-a acre, an' to cut
it short I was driven out o' that in my
old age with only $200,000 in my wallet.
I tell ye farmin' don't pay out thar; the
minit ye git a start an' begin to feel at
hum, they diskiver a silver mine in the
door-yard an' shoot ye out." Wall
Street Daily News.
Satisfactory Explanation.
'No, gentlemen," exclaimed a middle
aged man, who was talking to a crowd
on Austin avenue, "nothing in the world
could, induce mo to allow one of my
children to enter a school door, for the
reaton that "
"You hire a teacher to come to the
house," interrupted one of the crowd.
"No, it's not that. It's because! "
"They are too sickly to go to school,"
exclaimed another excitedly.
"No, that's not the reason, either. No
child of mine will ever attend school, be
cause "
"Because you don't want them to be
smarter than their daddy."
"No, gentlemen; the reason is because
I've not got any children." Texas
