Jicksuaville, April 14. A fire broke
out in this town this tnortiinir at about
o'clock. It originated near tjit
southeast corner of Oregon and CuKfor
nia streets, in a row of old frame building-;,
and soon -got beyond control.
Although no wind was blowing, the
dry lumber bLzod so high and the
flames spread so raiiiijly fhat nothing
could be done to check the confl "ru
tion till it had spread across to houses
of like character on the north side of
the street. Part of two. blocks embrae
ing some brick building, are consumed
all business houses and the heart of
the town The following is a list of
the losers and the amount of losses as
far as can now be obtained: Walter's

The fire is supposed to have been the
worfc of ipcendiaries, and two men,
Albert Johnson, a mulatto, and a young
white fellow named Johu Ledox, were
arrested and put in jail, but were after
wards discharged as nothing could be
found against them.

Hubbard, an old Oiegonian, and for
many years a resident of Champoeg,

very meager. It seems the parties had
a dispute on the road ft short distance

passed, and they separated, Gerrand
saying aa he went : "I have a

a man who says he's going to shoot me"
To him Gerraud replied; "I believe I
willxloit," and Hubbard-Said; "All
right 1 fciaze away !" The words had
scarcely been uttered beforo Gerrand
drew his pistol and fired, the shot
taking effect iu Ifubbard's peek, enter
on the left side and ranging downwards
lodging in the right shoulder. A sur
geon was culled and the ball was extrac
ted. It is believed that Hubbard cau
hot long survive. In the community
where he had so long resided, he has
enjoyed a reputation for good behavior
and peaceable disposition.
Immediately on firing the fatal shot
Gerrand fled. He is now a fugutive
from justice, although it is by no means
probable that he can long elude the
officers who are on his track- The I
