fiRFAT WHE AT JACKSOWf LI, G
Jicksuaville, April 14. A fire broke
out in this town this tnortiinir at about
o'clock. It originated near tjit
southeast corner of Oregon and CuKfor
nia streets, in a row of old frame building-;,
and soon -got beyond control.
Although no wind was blowing, the
dry lumber bLzod so high and the
flames spread so raiiiijly fhat nothing
could be done to check the confl "ru
tion till it had spread across to houses
of like character on the north side of
the street. Part of two. blocks embrae
ing some brick building, are consumed
all business houses and the heart of
the town The following is a list of
the losers and the amount of losses as
far as can now be obtained: Walter's
saloon, fixtures, personal effects, 82,000
Kreutzer s bakery ami btock, 1,500 j
E. Jacobs, goods, flour, eic.,. S700 ;
Cojip, clothing, dry goods, 2,000;
Drum, groceries etc., 100 ; Wm Boy
er, grocer, about .",000 ; Schumpf
barber jsfyop and fixtures, 500 ; A
Fisher & JJro., general merchandise
and building, 28,000; Judge & Nu
nao, saddlers, 2,000 ; Solomon, gener
al merchandise, 8,000, hangell, build
ings, shoemaker's stock, 700 ; Pope,
saloon and stock, 500 ; Coleman build
ings, about 1,000 ; Hen. Sichs, notion
and varietiesoOO ; Viet Schutz buijd
ings, about 2,000; McMaous &
Owen buildings, 1,500 ; John liilger
damage to building, 500; David Linn
damage to buildings, 3,000; C. C.
Beekman damage b? removal, 250 ; P
J. Ryan, building destroyed, 1,000;
amounting, to 59,550.. Probably
there were sufficient other losses
not now ascertained, to swell the
graDd total to between sisty , thousand
and sixty five thousand dollars.
Of this there is only kuuwn to have
been insured : A. Fisher and Brq. ,
J 0,000; Judge and Nunan, fully insur
ed, 2,000 ; L. Solomon, 3,000 ; Cole
iixm.SoOO; 13cd. Sachs 500, fully
insjred ; John Orth, 500, fully
insured; John Bigler, 500, fui y
insured ; . making a total insurauco of
17,000, and cutting the probable actual
loss, to 45,MO. The majority ot the
losers were retail dealers, who have lost
everything
The fire is supposed to have been the
worfc of ipcendiaries, and two men,
Albert Johnson, a mulatto, and a young
white fellow named Johu Ledox, were
arrested and put in jail, but were after
wards discharged as nothing could be
found against them.
3irjHl)i:K ATCHAMPOIiCJ
From passengers by yesterday after
noon'j truin, we learn that 'Jhouias
Hubbard, an old Oiegonian, and for
many years a resident of Champoeg,
was bhot aodmortally wounded on
Saturday hst.' by ThW Gjrraa la
half-breed. The particulars of tbe
bloody affair, as they come to us are
very meager. It seems the parties had
a dispute on the road ft short distance
from Chsmnoesr. concerning a sum of
- - -
monkey which, as Gjerjand claimed
Hubbard owed for .wood. JJubbard
decline tn pay the amount, some words
passed, and they separated, Gerrand
saying aa he went : "I have a
goocjl notion to shoot you. Afterwards,
Hubbard went into a store tu Champoeg
whither Gerrand followed him. A
the Jatter entered the doorway, Hubbard
said to those standing near him ; "here s
a man who says he's going to shoot me"
To him Gerraud replied; "I believe I
willxloit," and Hubbard-Said; "All
right 1 fciaze away !" The words had
scarcely been uttered beforo Gerrand
drew his pistol and fired, the shot
taking effect iu Ifubbard's peek, enter
on the left side and ranging downwards
lodging in the right shoulder. A sur
geon was culled and the ball was extrac
ted. It is believed that Hubbard cau
hot long survive. In the community
where he had so long resided, he has
enjoyed a reputation for good behavior
and peaceable disposition.
Immediately on firing the fatal shot
Gerrand fled. He is now a fugutive
from justice, although it is by no means
probable that he can long elude the
officers who are on his track- The I
