Hoke was indicted for the attempted

one of the most extraordinary searches
for a child on record. When hs wife left
she told him she was going. to Angola,
in the State of New York, aad there
.after, providing himself with sufficient
funds, he made his ; first visit. Here
- his worst suspicions were confirmed,
for he ftnnd that she had not ; been
there at ail. Qoiag back to .Atchuon -he
commenced the search. ; For over
six months, throogh every State in the
Union and all oyer Canada, he 'sought
his lost end loved child. Here and
there he found traces of his wife, who
was accompanied by her mother and
the child, and who took every possible
Beans to disguise themselves so that
he would not be able to track them.
In hb journeying to Canada, he found
that his wife aid Marbourg had been
there. He could find no farther trace.
Wearied and dispirited with the terrU
bid search, in which he had traveled
ever 18,000 miles, he arrived in Brook
lyn. As he had done in every other place,
. he spent his time1 traveling through
the streets, eagerly scanning the face
of her child that looked like his lost
darling - In hoplesa search yesterday
afternoon be happened to pass down

cf looking at the Windows of all the
houses as he passed. As he passed
the house of number 123 Willoughby
eteeet, he almost fainted at beholding
his child at the window in the rooms
of Mrs. E. C Inland, his mother-in-law.
Smothering his impatience, he hurried
to the Sheriff's ofSco and made a
sworn . complaint, and obtainisg the
assistance of a deputy Sheriff and a
special badge for himself, he went to
"the house where he had seen the child.
It was in the arms of his motherin
law, who made a desperate resistance
but of course they succeeded in getting
possession
This morning, through his counsel,
Mr. Hoke made a motion before
Judge Gilbert for the possession of the
ehild, and the story related above
came out The hearing was set down
for to morrow, he custody of tun
child, in the mean time, being awarded
to the Sheriff. Mr. Hoke has not
seen his wife since she left him, and be
says, knowing that she loves another
man better than she loves him, does
not want to see her ; but he will have
his child at the cost of his life, if
necessary.
