REBUTTED,
The election is over, anti the result
dhows unmtetataWy, that I the people
are determined to put an eud to
eorru'ptiony atod hereafter refuse to
support political rings, ! bad men,
And monopolies. The result ia a
proclamation by the people, to discard
party Dame, to ignore both the old
political organizations and establish a
ew one upon pure principles, and
f j tfhicb shall wipe out the : last vestige
ll of personal government, strike a death
blow to oppressive monopolies, cnie
up to the demands of the hour,
aac out- the rubbish nd fefics of
monarchy which so- tnctrnaber thut form
f government k tended to he established
fcystfr revoliiuotrary sires, make ali
officers eketive by the peop!e,tear away
Iron the President his gigantic
Appointing' power, bring down the
salaries of public servants to correspond
with the labor and income eRtheir master
frown down and put and end to
corruption 10 high places as well as low
ones, and above all other things, give
demagogues to distinctly understand
ifcat, they shall not tramplo upon,
tifle with, or disregard thej rights of
the people.
The present indications- are that
Col. Nesmith is elected by a large ma
j,ority, and at the same time it is patent.
tShat, a very light Vote has been polled ;
all this is very significant, and shows
But too plainly the determination of the
geopV. The result is as expected, the
Bed rock rebel element refused to vote
fiur Ncstuith but the better class of
republicans, and the Liberate came
direotlv to his aid, and as we predicted
he huo Lie a sent to Congress by the
loyal tlcuicut of the State, and Oregon
is once mere safe against the intrusion
of treason. This is a second time that Mr
Nesmith has been sent J.o Congress
By that element which earnestly desires
to permanently establish popular
Governmentand the people may feel
assured that STesmith will watch with
a vigilant eye, the encroachment of
Cao&arism on the one hand, and
corruption, radicalism and nuli
fiacation "on the other. Now
if the people . of Oregon will
coftie together next spring in, their
primaries, irrespective of party, send
delegates, good men, to a Sfate conven
tion organize an independant people's
party for the people, put out a correct
and progressive platform and upon it
place good reliable men known to be of
fctrict integrity, honesty and economy,
. they will sweep the State by a hand
some majority.
Query. Who feels the cheapest?
Senator Hippie Mitchell who is in
Washington backed by his resolution
endorsing bigamy, seduction and ah
crimes known to the law, except murder,
r'Hi. Smith whoTau upon that resolu
tion and was repudiated by the
Republican party by 2,000 majority.
Huge. Dallas precinct polled thirty
two votes for Jli Smith and seventy
for Nesmith, total one hundred and two
out of two hundred; and Bridgeport
precinct polled - five for Nesmith ana
geve for Smith against nearly on
httadred at the last State election. If
this he a fair average of tho State,- we
do not wonder that the IStotcwiaii
think the"voto was " Very Light " l
Conundrum. Since the last elec
tion it is pretty hard to tell whether
the "ring" consisting of flolladay and
his tools, has left the Republican party
or, whether the. boot ain't on the other
foot, the Republican party tjas left
the "no?." -

Chicago, October fourteen. Re
turns from the Iowa electiou, up to

but they indicate a full vote arid a
-VMiMueraUb Republican gain over the

Yellow Fever.
Memphis, October 12. The strccta
to-day are almost deserted. No
crowds of citizens going to or from
cAurch, uo pleasure parties nothing
but hearses and attendants hurrying to
the cemetery and quickly returning to
receive other victims of the terrible
scourge. The ceremony of burial has
long since been shorn of its solemn
formality. To meet the demands for
the removal of tho dead, undertakers
are required to move with celerity
more becoming merchandise transports.
Occasionally a vehicle containing the
Visiting Committee of some relief
association, passes at a rapid pace, but
aside from these, the city presents
gloomy appearance. A perceptible
change in the temperature about 3
o'clock this afternoon, gave promise of
frostin the event of which, a check
to the spread of the disease may be
expected, but a fearful increase ol
mortality will surely follow.
Hhrovcport.October 12. Seven deaths
