shipers has written a communication

things ever attempted to be placed be

This craiy man says it makes no dif
ference whether IJowlby or Ben Simp
son is nominated for Congress, every
Republican in Oregon wuuM come to
time with a vim ; he alo remarks that

the roads don't pay, and Holladay and
company having brought to, and ex
pended large amounts of money in
Oregon for the special benefit of her
citizen?, have the wrst of it, and con

us too well. The truth is he is wron;
in each and every proposition, for
cither one of th gentleman named by
J. G. if nominated would bo beaten a

Frank Caldwell, of the Cove, Union County
lost his life ft few days since, whilo driving logs

the river with a boat in order to loosen n jam id
logs, when the water getting the best of the boat
turned it over and Mr. Caldwoll was carried j
under the logs, and has not been seen since.

Smith of Jefferson and Carpenter of Salem
were summoned as soon a possible. The ma
jority of men would have died on the spot, but
his corlness and courage may save his life.

There is considerable excitement in the eity
in confluence of runer- that smallpox is
prevalent. Wo apprehend that most ot the
excitement ha grown out of tho action of par
ties who removed a patient from the Aletropoli8
Hotel to a vacant house in the south part of
the city without notifying the city
authority, and thus imnerrilled the
heulth'ofthe neighborhood. Oat of tbn matter
ha ve sprung rumors of smallpox hidden away
in every part of the city. There is no cause
whatever for alarm. The Mayor and Com
mittee have always taken every possible pre
caution ag:iint this spread of this contagion in
thu city, and the result has beeu that tho dis
ease has never become general.
Sam May, it lf confessed and thoroughly
proven thief, could nt be convicted in Morton
County. Whitley, in whose favor many points
were established whicU were at least entitled
to consideration, was readily convicted of as
sault with intent to kill. Courier
