t OUH MEXICAN UtilAUON.
AVe are Vaitiiig to be Informed what
Mexico is going - to do about it we
uieaii ulout Col. c Ken lie's r;id. The
Mexican Minister, " h true, las not
yet called the attention of our Govern
ment to the alleged violation of treaty
stipulations, but we have been solemn
ly Wyrjase by a 3Iatamoras journal,
which U understood to havo a seuiU
official authority, that the net was one!
of '.'ajratrosion." Furthermore, this
organ exhorts the Mexican Republic
io$tand up for its rights, and demand
iaauijo!iate reparation" Now, let us
un'le.Mtjiiid ourselves. The Mexican
authorities were notified some time
ago. that unless they stopped the Ma
rauding parties, the United States
Government jrotild take the punish
ment of the Indians into its own
bauds. The Mexicans responded that
they mut refuse permission to our
Government to send troops into Mexico
to bring Indians back to Texas, but ex
pressed a willingness to returc the
Indians whenever the latter signified
any desire to return. To this answer
the Mexicans were again iuformcd
that the United States Government
was determined to stop the raids at aft
hazards, and that if they were cotitin
ved, troopt would pursue the guilty
parties yntil captured, even if it took
tem into the inttrior vf Mexico. Here
was fair notice. The Mexican authori
ties had ample warning, if they would
not stop these raids upon our border,
that tee would ; that if they were unable
to assert their own authority agaics;
these maraulers. we wou d have to
j&terfcre for our own protection. And
ihU is just wLat our Government lias
done. Mexico may as well understao j
at i nee, that vhilt we have mi clrsite
t vitiate its Territory, yet we hav?
borne th i raids and robberies and ouf
liwries of its inhabi tants, until patience
has teamed to be a virpe, and hence
fjrth.if the Mexican sutho iocs cannot
we will apply the proper remedy. A
government that is too weak to asser'
itself, is not entitled to a very great
aixount of consideration. Indeed it is
almost next to useless to enter into
treaty stipulations with such a nation.
Bat tho Matamoras paper further per
sists io "fearing" that the action of Col
McKenzie will lead to hostilities.
Very well, then so le it. Indeed,
nostilite, if Mexico wants thrm wil'
uot be such a bad thing for U3 after all -A
war on our frontier would "in lcf
than no time " lead to cutting off anoth
er slice for the purpose of rcctifiying
and strengthening our bouudary II
Mexico insists upon it and as our great
minion is to "ex'end the blessings of
freedom and equal . rights," we wou'd
aot hesitate veryolong about taking un
der our protection the States of Nuevo
)eon, Cohahulia, Chihuahua. Sen ra
Lower California, and the Northern
end of Durango. There is no doubt
that a healthy and an energetic mixture
Yankee population in those effete and
decaying States would be a good thing
on general principles, if not otherwise.
If we cannot have the ioterpatiotia
comity with Mexico which is recog
nized by the law of nations, we must
at least defend ourselves from Mexican
raiders; and if MexLo choose to be
offended and go to war
of courss that goverment 'will;
have to take tho consequences. . Ao
nexatiou" may be the oply cfiecctqal
remedy, after all. And then, youj
know, ; "Manifest Vet tiny."
THE ORIGIN OF MOUNTAINS.
.
Professor Jantes D. Dana contrib-1
tes to the American Journal of
Science and Arts" a very learned
treatice on tome results of the earth'
.contraction from cooling, inclijding a
dicu98iqn of the origin of mountains
and the nature of tho earth's interior
In Fpeakiog ot the kinds and structure
ot mountain, ho draws a hitherto
neglected distinction between ; 1. A
simple or individual mountain range of
mass, which is the result of one process
of evolution, and which may bo distin
guished as a monogenuio range, be
ing one in genesis; and 2. A com
posite or polygeqetio range or chain
made up of two or more nconogen-tic
fombbad. Applachiai chain
the niouotain regiou aloog the Atlan"
tic border ot North Auierica is. a
polypenetic chain, and consists of
several others ranges, principal among
; vt'i c'l iri the Green Mountains, the
Alleghanies, and the Highland, include
iiiir the Blue Ilidge and Adiroadicks.
Qfthes, the first wis completed
essentially after the lower hilurian era,
the 8?con) immediately after the car
honiferous era, ami the third arc pre
siluiian in formation.
Mountaiu-m-iking is shown to be
very tdow work. Alter the beginning
of the primordial, the first period ot
disturbance of North America ol
special note was that at the close of the
lower silurian. when the Green Moun
tains were finished. This interval be
tween the beginning of the primordinl
and the metamorphi?ra of the above
range was at least 10,000 000 years.
The next epoch of grtat ui.-tuibance
in ilia same Appalachian region was
that at the close of the carboniferous
era, in which the Alleghinim were
folded up; and, altogether, it is stated
that the Appalachians were at least
35,000,000 year in maki,1- The disr
placements of tie Connecticut river
sandstone and the accompanying ig
neous ejections, which occurred before
the cretaceous era, took place lor some
7,000,000 years after the Appalachian
revolution. Thus it is demonstrated
that the ateral pressure resulting h.m
the earth's contrac.ion required an ex
ceedingly long era in order to aceuuni
late force sufficient to produce a general
yielding and polication or displace- j
