ring, but it would be an unenviable task
to undertake to make the great mass of

ever to both these pipers to say that
they strongly support the administration
of President Grant", Credit Mobilier

Meacham and the Modoc Peace Com

icle for its very plain talk concerning
the Peace High Joint Commission. Wc
confess we can see nothing very ex
ceptionable in the course pursued by
the Chronicle, but were thinking all the
time that it was telling very many
thruths if not the whole truth, and
uothiug but the truth, true it has talk
ed plain English, and has handled
Mcacham and the Applegate family
without gloves, but this is just , what
suits the people and to a great extent
it has fully accorded with the Oregon
press; uuder these circumstances we
think il ungenerous to complain in
language so severe. ,The Chronicle's
jiower is being felt in Oregon, that's
what's the matter.

Tho Telfair reports that there in
little doubt that the Wright was wreck
upon a sea otter ir.up, which consists of
low sunken rocks, about fix miles out
side of Queen Charlotte Sound. Con

facts that portions of the wreck were
found in Wrignt's Sound, two hundred
miles north, and in Seafroth Channel
some ninety miles north of the wreck

Roston, March 17- The propeller
Grace Irving, which left here Sunday

off Duxbury about three o'clock
yesterday afternoon. She sunk so
quickly that none on board had time to
save themselves. They were from

James Ritchie, of this city, is said to
have been aboard.
Syracuse, N. Y., March 17. This
afternoou a man named K.eller, aged 21,
murdered his cousin, Ida Spencer, aged
14. Keller went into the kitchen
where Ida was at work, and taking a
short ioru bar struck her on the head.
She fell to the floor, when he
repeatedly struck her, beating her
brains out. Keller then ran down
toward the Central Railroad depot. A
freight train had just started east and
he attempted to jump on the caboo$.e,
for the purpose of eseapiug, when,
missing his hold, he fell, the back of
his head hitting a rail, killing, him
intautiv. Th3 motive for the crime
is not known. The parties moved iu
good society.

Halifax. March. 17. The steamship
Petersburg, from Amoy via the Suez
Canal, bound for New York, put into
St. Georges, Hermuda, on the 5th ist.,
short of coal. She had burned her
spare spars, bulkheads, boats and 100
chests of tea. She took ia coal at St.
Georges and sailed again, but grounded
outside the harbor and became a total
wreck. She was a splendid ship, and
the largest merchant vessel that ever
visited Rermuda. She had on board,
besides other cargo, 42 ,000 chests of
tea, worth over JC500,000 sterling, half
of which was landed by groat excrtian
of the crew.
