CORPORATE 310XOPOJL1 8.
.The next great division of parties iu
American politics will be opposition to
and war with monopolies. The "organ
izedoVer of these vast corporations is
obtaining ! a controlling: influeuce over
th Government of the country that is
irresistible," The absolute indifference
ad :inseusibility to individual rights
and private. interest by these monopo
lists 13 ;,as marked as was ever the
jnsolence of. authority in feudal times.
Never did Saxon slave wear the badge
of a jBiore galling servitude than does,
the American people to day to the
threat corporations. Gradually they
iave so 'debauched ' the morals of the
community, sileutly they have so de
-moralized public virtue, that it really
seems as though there was no end and
no limitation . to corporate exaction
and demands. There are in the city
of San Francisco, wo ihiuk(and we
speak it with a reservation), one or two
ot three honest officials, bat they are
mostly in those offices where the tempt
taion is least. There may be an hon
est man or two in the Board of Super
visors, but we shall not risk our reputa
.lion as judges of men by mentioning
.their names. Vfe hear stories told of
(oor Assessor that indicate either that
he is a dishonest man or that there ure
glanders abroad in the community.
yie see the officers of these great cor
porations doing acts that only from
k$rT 7JPrjT magnitude save their perpe
trators from conviction and imprison
ment as felons. Gould steals millions
restores a part, and- the offense is con
doned. We see our managers, direc
tors and presidents of corporations in the
lobbies of our Legislature debauchbo
and bribing members for coin. We
Jtnow that a California Legislature is
not an honest body, and that each year
it is worse than the proceeding year.
We know that politics is rbtt,n and
corrupt, from the primary election to the
Senatorial election. We know that
the same thing is true of New York
and Pennsylvania, and we know that it
8 true ofthcGovernmeiit at Washington
The Senators of the United States buy
their positions for money, and in turn
sell themselves for coin. Corporations
expend itheir money with reckless ex
travagance among lawmakers Jo pur
chase the enactment of laws that ena
ble them to rob the people. It U not
yet neccessary to bribe the Judges to
give those corporations false interpret
tions pf the law, because so far the laws
,are made for the crrpomtions. This most ;
alarming condition of things challenges
the attention and will soon arouso the
action of the people. It will soon
become ; insupportable, and when it
docs then great corporations will be
scattered like straws in a tempest.
At present they are bound together by
the mutuality of self-interest. The
press is the natural friend and ally of
the people. As. the great body of the
people are honest, so the great body of
Ihe press will be true and constant to
the right. Individual members of the
press will b seduced and bought and
bribed. The Tribune hat been sold
to a great corporation, and it shows the
the power of money, and illustrates the
strength and cunning of the telegraph
monopoly that it can afford to pur
chase the leading journal of America,
a property costing a milJion of dollars
to aid in upholding its right to rob

ourselves in confidence that tho time
is coming when an honest and intel

fearless and unpurclnisablo press, will
break themselves loose from these
corporations, and will place them where
they belong, under the foot of an
indignant and outraged people.

The above is a complete and full
endorsement of the course pursued by
