From tlia Timer. From Col. Alvin
Cobb, who was in town this week from
Sprague Hivcr, situated in the locality
of the late Indian outbreak, we learn
that the settlers immediately assembl
ed at one of the strongest natural pos
itions in the neighborhood, and have
collected all families in that section,
they have themselves securely forti
ficd and venture out only in bodies.
Had not these timely precautions been
taken, the settlers might have met the
sad fate of those on Lost River, as
they are situated between the Suake
and Modoc tribes, whom tho Col. says
are allies. The settlers arc well armed
and provided to defend themselves
against any ordinary attack from the
Indians, and with a man ot the judg
ment and dctcrmiued will 'of Col. Cobb
to direct them, will doubtless sustain
themselves from tho dangers that
threaten them.
From the Oregon City JSateprite:
Hy private letter from Saletn, we
learn that Governor G rover yesterday
pardoned Mlcheal McCormick who was
sentenced to tho penitentiary 'from this
county, for killing Tom Montgomery ,
an Indian. There wa, considerable
doubt as to whether tho Inqian ! died
from the blows received from McCor
mick or from general disease, and learn
that the pardon was granted oh ttis
