Words of Cheer.
There never was a time in tle whole
history of the temperance reforai that
gave niore epeouragement all earnest
a lvocates of that povemept, than the
present. The advance has been slow,
hut surp, and now the line of approach
is well nigh beneath the walls of the
Stronghold where King Alcohol has
reigned supreme for ages. There is n
question now agitating the public mind,
which so affects the vital interests of
the public more than the question of
Temperance. Drunkenness is our Na
tional cuyse. Intemperance tho princi
pal cause of crime committed, and it
is estimated that three fourths of all the
tax which the peoplo are compelled to
pay arises directly or indirectly from this
one cause. This being the case, docs it
not come directly home to every one to
take an active interest in this matter
from a selfish motive-, if no other.
The Grand Lodge of CJood Templars
at its last regular meeting, passed a res
olution recommending to lUq members
ot the Order the policy of supporting
none but temperance men for political
offices, regardless of party tie. This
sentiment was echoed by the State Tem
perance popvention, which itet a fuw
dajs afterwards, aad also by the State
Temperance Alliance, which met iu
Salem in February last. The influence
of these demonstrations, of temperance
men without legard to political tic,
has far surpassed the expectations of
the most sanguine. The political par
ties have not dared to wholly ignore
the demands of the temperance clement
in our state, and it but remains for the
friends of th cause to stand firm ta
make the move a success.

On Monday afternoon last, Hon. Geo.

Dallas and vicinity, upon political issues
His speech yx, full ol good, sound
reasoning, and he ably elucidated the
questions of importance now before the
people. He spoke at length upon the
Swamp L?nd, Litigant, and Dam -Lock
Swindle Laws passed by tho last Legis
lature. We think it unnecessary to
report the speech in full, as the citizens
of the county were out en masse, and
heard for themselves. Suffice it to say,
f that he convinced his hearers that what
he said regarding the questions at issue
could not be gainsayed.
HON. JOH.N F. CAPLES,

No D.vMAOt:. Democrats, some
body else, picked up tin: hulk of an
old. dismantled frigate, aud converting
it into a terpodo, heavily charged with
buncombe au i Dillingsgate, put a slow
match to the fuse, and sent it over to
Polk, to explode among the llepublican
licet. The explosion might have been
dangerous to that fleet, as the charge
was heavy, hud tho timbers ol the old
hulk been good oak, but they were of
Oregon balm, and so water-staked and
rotten that they crumbled to1 dust, im

a man of more than ordinary ability,

very best men ol their party. I And so it
is, not only in Oregon but throughout

U10 Oif'onian says: On las Fri
day, about 10 o'clock" A. M., a man
named John Long, while cniragfl in
blasting rocks at the Willamette Kalis,
met with a very severe accident, w hich
may result fatally. He had just com
pleted tamping the Ida t with fine par
ticles of atone, adjusted the fuse and
ignited one end. lSeforo he could fairly
get from over the drill hole the lire
was transmitted through about nine
feet of fuse, and tho blast went oh1.
Long was blown about six feet from tin;
ground, and fell backward among some
sharp-pointed stones. Ilis head was
scveruly cut with a sharp corner, and
his shoulders badly bruised. The en
tire contents of the blast was blown into
his lace, which it badly burned, and
lacerated to a frightful extent by the
fragment of rock. It is feared that his
sight has beeu totally destroyed. The
unfortunate man is well known in this
city, cud owns a ranch across the river.
He has been engaged at the Falls for
the past six months, being a very carcul
and experienced blaster. He is about
thirty years of age, and has no family
Some of his friends were down ou Sat
urday, ' endeavoring to make arrange
ments to have him taking to the County
Hospital or to the Sf Joseph's Hospital,
Vancouver, where ho could be properly
provided for. The fuse which was the
cause of tho accident is said to be a
new kind, and hnve never been used
before at that place. A short time af
ter the occurrence a trial was mado to
test the fuse. A coil nearly one hun
dred feet iu lenght was touched off at
one end. In almost an instant of time
tho lire ran from one to an auother. It
was thercforo deemed dangerous, to
the highest possible degree, to use in
connection with tho blasting operations
and was destroyed At tho last accounts
Long was a littlo better, but hopes of
his recovery arc still. quite tbubtful.
