""IV a jt-ar ago; one summer cvo,
While walking out with Jauo,
yx ttiko a lover's farewell loive,
Down in tbe shtuly lane, I
I, cuielutfs, crushed a tiny flowcr--
I did sot miiid it then ; j
It was a heedless act of pcyar,
A common thing with men.
IV.o parted j there were word iinknd;
Hex eyes werofilUnl with -tears,
And I wa? proud and routrhj ar.d blind;
' But, oh J tUo after years !
Two -voices, like my shadow, haunt
. My way at every f U-p-- I
Tho sighing of tho murdered phuit,
The wail of her who wep.
I crushed a flower, I killed a heart ;
And now where'er I go. j
I find myself a thing apart.
With " heritage of woo.;
Where'er a little flower I meet,
It bends its head away,
S.krioks from my s;uri!egtou3 feet,
And crouehts to tuo clay.'
And then it sounds a Ijttlts moan
I heard it in the lane
That dreadful night a long agono,
When I wai there with Jane.
Cut now 1 never crush a Unwer,
Nor pluck one from its stalk,
And all are safe in field or bower,
Wherever 1 may walk.
Ah ! flowers forgive, but hearts do not ;
Human inhuman all are we;
J don't believe Jane had a thought
'That was not all of lovo for me ;
And yet I .crushed her like the plant,
With coward duubts alut her truth;
And since, my only prayer is, grant
Forgiveness for the fins of youth!

CAN CONVENTION AT POHTLA.ND. MAUCH 2tlTH,
1872. '
The Union Republican party of Ore
gon, in Convention, makes this declara
tiou of its principles and policies :
1. To the Constitution of tho Uni
ted States and all its amendments we
pledge our uufaltering allegiance; to
its authority a willing obedience ; to its
full and legal construction and enforce
ment our constant support.
2. That the suceess of the present
National Administratiou iu reducing
the public debt, diminiidimg and equa
lizing taxation, administering every
branch of public ti Hairs- with economy
and efficiency, farming and improving
the civil service, euloreiui: the laws
without fear or favor, protecting the
nation's wards with'pateutal care against
tho cruel avarice of speculation and
Iraud, and maintaining friendly rela
tions with Foreign lowers, has been
such as to command the approbation
of the great majority of the American
people, and justly entitle it to-the con
iidence and commendation of every true
Republican.
We regard the payment of the
national debt, iu full compliance with
ail legal obligations to our creditors
everywhere, and iu accordance with the
true letter and spirit of i.s contracting,
as no longer a question in i-sue; hut
that we may be clearly understood, wo

demn the administration of our Slate
officers and laws as extravagant, reck

rightly charge all these results as the
acts of the Democratic party.
We are in ; favor of tho United

10. That we demand tho repeal of

Government extending aid toward build

to Salt Lake City, and we hereby pledge
our party representatives to tho support
of tho same
12. That tho indiscriminate licen-
sing of persons to sell spirituous liquors
without being placed under proper re
sponsibilities for the abuse thereof,
having been found by experience, to
promote the growth of crime and pau
perism, and thereby to seriously increase
the rate ot taxation, the Repulhcan
party recognise the right and duty of
the law making power to prevent and
limit the evils and abuses of such sale,
so far as concerns the public good and
is conisttCnt with individual liberty, by
refusing to license other than law-abiding
and re-ponsible persons, who can
furnish sufficient sureties fur good con
duct. IU. That the Republican party of
Oregon is iu favor of obtaining assist
ance from the General Government for
the construction oC a wagon road from
the city of Portland to the Dalles, re.
cognizing this as a most important and
necessary improvement for the State.
14. We affirm that the continuance
in power of the Republican party is
the only sure preservation of national
peace aud prosperity, and for reasons
therefor wo point to its brilliant record
in the litfe civil war ; to a complete
nationality ; to a united sisterhood of
thirtyseven .States ; to our Territories
rapidly warming into State life; to a
nation freed from the tidnt ot human
slavery ; to au elevated aud enlarged
citizenship; to our national standing at
home a yd abroad ; to the work of vig
orous reform in all discovered abu-es of
authority or trut ; to an utuqualed for
'ii;ii credit ; to a successful and "solid
financial system, and to the unparalleled
peace and prosperity evciy where in our
